Free PR advice for Coach Hawkins

Reporter to Hawkins:

What did you think of the students' "blue out" protest?

Incorrect answer: True fans wear black and gold.

Correct answer (supplied free of charge):

There's nobody more disappointed with the Buff's season so far than the players and the coaches, and I respect the fans' demand to see improvement in CU football. You expect the best. You want your buffs to win, and win big. We all want that too, and we spend time every day working on the things we need to to get better. Every player on the field and on the sidelines wants to win. Every coach is asking himself "what can I do to improve? What do we need to change?" Every player is saying "Am I giving enough? What can I do better?" And we will be better, maybe not as quickly as everybody wants to see, but we will.

If fans want to put on sky blue and come cheer us on, I understand where they are coming from. I would rather have them at the game, supporting our players and CU football, than not coming at all. We hear you loud and clear. It's painful, but we got the message. I hope the day is right around the corner where we can have the stadium section filled again with shoulder-to-shoulder gold. Filled with Buffalo pride. We are working to deserve the support of all of our fans. When we earn that, it will be a great day for CU football.

Seriously... How childish. **** him!

He knows the shirts were about him, and him alone, and this was his shot back at them.

Not real fans? Wow.

Well, I checked my messages and nobody was looking for MY advice lately, but if I were advising Hawk, I would have embraced the "blue out" no matter how bitter it was to do so and acknowledged that the "blues" were making a statement.

I was in my gold yesterday, and didn't agree with the blues, but I would advise the head coach to RESPECT the statement that was made.

Maybe you should give Tyler Hansen some PR advice as well. And while your at it, the rest of the team that was pissed.

I get the blue thing, but as I said before the game, look out, because it will distance the players from the fans. And it did that. It drove a little bit of a wedge between the players and the fans. Nothing that a few wins won't fix though.

If the team continues to play with fire, well then, a little wedge is fine with me. I want angry buffaloes, not apathetic buffaloes

Yeah, it would be too bad if that is what it took to fire them up. I'd hope that is not the case.

That wasn't my point though. If AJ is going to rip Hawkins for his remarks, then he'd better rip the players for theirs.

? Players != Hawk. Hawk is a coach. players can say whatever the **** they want about us (if they win). I am tired of coddling them. I love cheering them on, but they have NOT played with pride this year on multiple occasions. The blue out wasn't about them, it was about Hawk. Apparently this team responds well to a little Hawk hate. If Hawk Love doesn't work, I am pretty happy to deliver the Hawk hate :smile2:

Didn't see it as a rip on Hawkins, I see it as "Geez, Hawk, do you want these kids on your side or not?" alternative.

Come on, DBT, don't read more into what I wrote than what I wrote. It's "free advice" ... nothing more. As a head coach, when he responds to a reporter, knowing it will be widely quoted, give it some thought: what is the BEST outcome from this? How can you respond respecting both the team, and the mood of the fans?

In pr, embrace your enemy, or confuse the enemy by hitting a friend. But don't take them on as an adversary, act like their actions are understandable. Say "I get it" and move on.

I had no problem with Hawk's remark. The offshoot of this is that he is using it to develop an "us against the world" thing. Hey, if that works, its all good.

take a page from GB's book... rally the team and win the north at 6 and 6

The thing is, by acknowledging it at all, they basically gave all fans wearing blue exactly what they wanted. The "blue out" made a statement. When you have players, the head coach, and the SID talking about it during the postgame comments, it clearly has hit a nerve. Now we can debate whether or not the "blue out" was effective, but it no doubt got attention. The AD should be more worried about the 5,000+ empty seats from yesterday than going after fans who actually showed up.

:yeahthat:

Well done 87 :smile2:

Alfrerd, you bastard! You trying to take food off my table with your "free advice"?

For the last 4 years Hawk's been paying me $1,000 for every catch phrase I come up with for him. You know, gems like "get your horns out" and "be the bow" along with "it's the little things" and the ever popular "we'll see".

Sorry, I wasn't thinking.
About the little things.

correct answer (supplied free of charge):

well...as a competitor, we embrace the fact that buff fans have high expectations.

those fans took a risk and did something unconventional and i can respect that. I'm supportive of people taking risks. The blue out was used to help motivate the team and get them fired up. That's what i love about colorado.

this team refused to be in the same category as those one, two, or three win teams back in the early eighties. Tuesday's practice was a real turning point.

we're real pleased to see the horns come out. it's all part of being thrown into the fire.

I like yours as well.

exactly my point - Hawkins would have served his cause better to recognize the fan's point of view and repeat that he intended to earn their respect again.

Nice, skidmark. (whether you were joking or not.)

Hawk shoukld spend more time trying to find real black and goal special teams coach and a real black and gold OL coach.

No matter, after he and his staff lose another road game in the big 12, he won't have a pot to piss in.
