From ESPN's College Football Rumors:

Al Lesar of the South Bend Tribune writes that Saturday's "possible program-shattering" loss to Navy might be, to quote Liz Lemon, the deal-breaker for athletic director Jack Swarbrick.

Lesar writes: "Motivation has sailed away. It's a season that's sinking fast. This has all the makings of 'abandon ship' time." He asks how a Navy team that lost to Temple a week earlier could come back and outclass the Irish. He wonders how Weis and assistant head coach/defense Jon Tenuta could use the same scheme they did a year ago. ("We had a pretty good clue that they were going to come back and do the same things as they did last year," Middies coach Ken Niumatalolo said. "We had a few things [planned for that defense].")

Pete Fiutak of CollegeFootballNews.com goes a step further, suggesting that Niumatalolo might actually be a good replacement for Weis. Irish fans want Brian Kelly of Cincinnati, but Kelly will be the hottest name out there and Notre Dame certainly won't be the best situation he could walk into. Plus, Kelly continues to insist that he is happy at Cincinnati and that he believes he can win a national championship there, so there is no reason for him to leave.

Also, the Insider writer from ESPNChicago said that at the least it looks like staff changes will be forced and that John Tenuta and Corwin Brown are gonzo from the defense.

He should be gone, I would be surprised if he is not.....now the burning question, who comes in after Weis

I hope this ends the notion that NFL guys are sure things as college head coaches. Everyone wants a Pete Carroll story but I think he was the very rare exception.

I would say that the Belicheat coaching tree has been a huge failure so far. I really hope McDaniels is the real deal in Denver cause every other ex belicheck assistant has failed miserably.

Hawk's Catholic.

OMG! Could you imagine someone as stubborn and incompetent, with the emotional fragility of a china doll, like Squawkins being the HC of the Little Irish?

How long until this conversation takes place?

Dan: Hi honey, I'm home (tear, tear)

Misti: Oh Danny, what's wrong?

Dan: It only took ND 2 days to figure out I'm full of crap... Took CU 3-4 years.

Misti: Would you like me to get you a juicebox?

Dan: Yeah... Grape.

Misti: Hera ya go... Let me put the straw in for you. Those Buffs weren't so bad, were they?

Dan: I miss the little things... We were so close. Ready to pop.

Well for recruiting purposes, it's been shown to be a major plus. The downside is, the coaches that try to mimic an NFL practice is where you've had problems.

I thought PC was the exception to the rule, not the rule. NFL coaches always seem to fail in college and college coaches always seem to fail in the NFL.

Belichick assistants that have gone on to become head coaches (wikipedia). Yeah, they haven't done much in the NFL, but Ferentz, Hill, and Saban aren't too shabby in college.

Six of Belichick's assistant coaches have become NFL head coaches:

Five more assistant coaches have become NCAA Division I head coaches:

We think we have buyout issues, I think there's still 8 or 9 years left on Charlie Cheeseburger's contract. :wow:

The money Notre Dame will actually owe him in a buyout (as spelled out in the contract) is a big amount, but it is considerably less than the amount remaining on the contract. This was revealed last year when there was talk about him being fired then.

Weis was never a HC in the nfl though... PC was a laid back players coach, thats why it works for him. He wasn't a rigid do it this way guy.

There is a lot of talent at ND. The new coach could conceivably pull a Meyer or Stoops and win a MNC in his first few years if the players buy into him and fast. Otherwise it's back to rebuilding.

How I would love to see them stew for a few more years of mediocrity.

I think he just means NFL coaches going to the college game. I think there are a lot more failure stories than there are success stories of those guys. Just recently off the top of my head: Chan Gailey, Dave Wannstedt, Charlie Weis, Mike Sherman, probably some others that I can't think of. Point being, they seem to recruit well in college, but for whatever reason they can't seem to be able to get their knowledge to work on the younger kids. Sherman and Wannstedt still have a chance to prove the doubters wrong, but I don't see it. Wanny took a pretty solid Dolphins team and ran it into the ground because he lacked the ability to see talent and RW420 reared it's head. He also just isn't much for a HC, just like Norv Turner. Great defensive mind, bad overall coach.

how could you forget about callahan!?

What I don't get is:

What? I guess he's getting at the fan pressure and expectations? Other than that you have 5* recruits that are lining up to come play for you because you're Notre Dame and you have your very own TV channel to broadcast your games. You couldn't ask for better tradition, support, recruits, etc. Only downside is they play in South Bend. You even have Lou Holtz on ESPN talking up your team no matter how bad they are.

Because they will probably be the main competition to getting a coach that doesn't have CU/Denver ties.
No, it's because everyone that isn't Catholic hates Notre Dame. Face it, these guys have more money than God. They also have there own TV network. Screw them. Everyone loves to see them fail.

Note to self. Notre Dame is an elite job. Notre Dame has unlimited funding for football. Notre Dame hired the Stanford coach who was an up-and-comer, looked like a great hire. Didn't work out. Notre Dame hired the Offensive Coordinator from the #1 franchise in football, it has failed miserably. Notre Dame has had one bad hire after another.

I think hiring is a crap shoot. A lot of schools with a lot more $$$ than Bohn have failed to get it right several times. (Alabama before Saban, OU before Stoops, USC before Carroll, NU with Callahan and tbd with Pelini, aTm several times, etc, etc, etc)

Yep, you're right. But you'll also notice that they don't settle for mediocrity. When a coach isn't producing, they can his ass and go find another.

Don't forget Dear Old CU.

You'd think schools like ND and SC would have little or no trouble hiring. I think in age like today where partial qualifiers and walk ons are greatly reduced and scholarships limited downwards from 100 to 85 has made coaching game much harder to play.

Look at upstart programs like ECU, USF, TCU, Houston, BSU. Most of those schools require not much more than a pulse for admission and some of the best talent, but not necessarily the brightest talent, are getting into and playing at those places.

Todays media also makes it much more difficult to cover up a mis step by a player.
