Our DB depth next year scares me

DB's Gone: Burney (SR), Chappelle (SR), JSmith (RS JR) (not a sure thing, but pretty likely imho)

Only returning CB with experience: Jalil (who looks pretty decent this year, but still gets burned pretty bad at times).

Safeties: Polk (RS soph), Perkins (jr?), Mahnke, Sanderfield... Not a lot of athleticism behind Polk, although Perkins has looked OK (if slow) at times.

Coming up and unproven:

Wright (he will switch back with the new WR depth... injury issues tho)
Deji (RS frosh)
Vigo?
Jon Hawkins (decent on ST)

Who else? looks scary to me...

Jonathon Hawkins had a nice tackle on ST, came down the field hard and fast. You have to wonder why he's not getting PT.

Why would Jimmy leave? Yes, he would likely get drafted, but I don't think he's a high draft pick yet. Might be if he sticks around another year, though.

What are the chances Jimmy Smith gets drafted after this year? I think he could really improve his stock if he comes back for his senior year and maybe has a bit of a more high-profile season.

You know, I was thinking, if Jimmy Smith stays another year, he might improve his draft status....

1. He will get drafted. That is guaranteed $ and hes alreadey been here 4 years. Injury concern. This depends on how he grades out, but damn, even 3d round money is damn good.
2. NFL rookie pool cap looks to be going in soon. Get the $ while the gettin is good.
3. New coach possible (probable?) at CU - anything is possible to his playing time... if he grades out decent enough, why take part in another rebuilding year?

At the start of the year, I really felt like Jimmie Smith would opt for the league after the season. Not really sure now. I hope he stays for 1 more.

official roster shows these that you didn't list:
(CB) Jaffee
(DB) Hicks, McAninch (????)
(S) Ewing, Meyer, Orms, B Smith

Yeah, db could be very thin next year, particularly at corner. I hope the staff brings in at least one JC corner who can compete/contribute immediately. Other than my "wish list", I'm anxious to see what Hicks, Vigo, Olatoye, and Orms can do.

3rd round money is very good. I think if he leaves, he will be a 6-7 rounder with the possibility of not getting drafted. He's been good, but it's not like he's a shutdown corner for us right now. It's hard to tell, because we've been so ****ty. However, he needs to stay in order to boost his draft status.

Deji apparently almost got to play this year, as a lot of people raved about him during fall practices. I think he might shine next year...but yes, we could use some DB recruits.

thanks for the rest of the guys... hopefully some of them step up big, cause even if they do, we will be losing 4 starters from our nickel package. Thats a lot.

Disagree with your evaluation of where he goes. He's been a shut down corner. Every completion against him is one hell of a catch by the WR and he rarely gets thrown at.

Amen. Need some of these guys work, improve, and step up. Also need to recruit db's - 3/4 this year (I hope they're all corners).

I don't think he's a 3rd round pick yet. More like a day 2 pick, IMO.

aren't 3d rounders all day 2 picks now? :smile2:

He will almost certainly get the NFL evaluation before he goes... anywhere from 3-4 and maybe even 5 and hes gone imho.

Snow,

You laid out a bit of a worst case scenario.

Best case:

Jimmy comes back (likely, imho) and he and Jalil form a great starting CB tandem.

Wright fully recovers from injury and he is a playmaking nickel corner for us.

Deji proves to be everything practice reports suggest and provides good depth.

At least 1 guy from the trio of Jonathan Hawkins, Steven Hicks and Paul Vigo steps up and provides further depth at corner.

For safety, Perkins and Polk provide a good starting tandem with Polk having the potential to be exceptional.

Behind them, Sandersfeld, Mahnke and Orms will need to step up... more so, we need to land a top prospect at safety that can push Perkins for his starting job.

Yep, my bad.

You think he leaves for 4th-5th round money? I hope he's not that desperate.

I don't think there's much of a chance of Jimmy getting drafted. He's still mistake prone and hasn't yet put it all together. I don't think that's a serious option at this point.

We lose Chappelle and Burney of our top 6. We should return about 4 guys with a lot of experience, including Jimmy. That's more than most years. Brown has shown he can get young talent ready in a hurry. Polk will be a monster by next year. Young guys like Olatoye, Vigo, Orms.... will be ready.

Agreed, although I have high hopes for Orms. That kid is a playmaker. I just hope he's fast enough to be effective back there.

I am getting used to worst case scenarios with this team.

Jimmy Smith would be crazy to jump after this season. He's had his share of struggles (although he's been great as of late), he should come back his SR year and be a first day NFL pick.

Deji is going to be a player and Wright will be a DB again (tons of WRs next season, no way he cracks that lineup). Don't forget about Parker Orms.

Jimmy isn't even our SS CB and yet he's going to get drafted? The guy has serious potential and covers incredibly well in man, but to suggest that he's anything more than a 5th round pick at this point is over the top.

I could see him leaving, especially with a new coach, but he has a chance to seriously improve his draft rating. I liked him against Shipley this year, but he has yet put everything together. He still misses tackles and goes for the big hit, only to have his guy break free for another 4 or so yards.

Im thinking their are a lot of kids around the conference that are gonna look at Bradford and the money he left on the table and enter the draft.

JSmith isnt going anywhere. He is no where near ready for Sundays. He has a future in the NFL if he works on some things. Coming out now would be stupid imho.

Also, new recruit Jered Bell added to the depth at CB. Probably would redshirt next year unless Smith does leave early.

We really need Jonathan Hawkins to be good in 2010 alongside Brown and Smith, and either Hicks or Deji to step up if Jimmy Smith leaves.

Jaffee, Vigo, and Wright are all the dark horses as they have spent time learning their new positions.

At Safety, isn't Vince Ewing still in the mix? With Polk, Perkins, Mahnke, Orms, and Sandersfield we shouldn't have much of a drop off, if not a significant improvement with those guys getting more experience. There have been rumors of a big Safety recruit signing soon.

Not alot of room for injuries or step-backs in the group, but if the guys produce that we need to produce, we should be OK with that unit.
