To those proposing a buyout ... a dose of reality

Well they can talk all they want, but I think Bohn just needs to be completely clear that this does not use a cent of tax dollars and that the revenue of the department which ALL Colorado athletics desperately need will dramatically drop due to loss of ticket sales etc if Hawkins is retained.

I don't think it's difficult to manage public opinion on this one. Bohn's good at PR, and it makes it pretty easy when the facts are on your side.

1. No public money will be used.
2. The buyout is less expensive than the expected revenue losses if Hawkins were retained.

Easy sell, imo.

Hey, as long as he lives here, Hawkins will have to pay taxes. If we pay him $3.5 million, Colorado's tax revenue will go up, won't it?

Plus, I believe his contract provides that we can pay him in scratch tickets.

How do you think it would be received by the taxpaying public ... and donors who DON'T give a **** about football?

Just sayin'

Bohn's gotta be clear that the AD is self-supporting through AD-specific donations and ticket sales, TV revenue and bowl :)sad1:) revenue.

Although to be completely honest, we could be in the biggest boom in history with CU's bedget expanding and the same ****ers would bitch & moan about about coaches salaries and buyouts.

Most likely, there won't be a dime of taxpayer money that goes into this. Like it or not, there are specific donations that never would have been made if they weren't used for something related to a "football" item.

I beleive you can NOT donate specifically to the football program, but there are ways to donate that your intent can be carried out.

If there is a buyout, this is the most likely scenario.

At the rate we are going with coaches, maybe we should establish a permanent "Buyout Fund." It should be able to pay out a million a year for eternity. :sad2:

You can make specific donations it just reduces your tax advantage.

Oh... so Oklahoma boosters donating to Rhett Bomar was legal :smile2: they just couldnt deduct it from their taxes? That must have been the problem

j/k

There were 10,000 empty seats for the A&M game. 10,000 x 6 games next season would be 60,000 less tickets sold. That's got to be $3 million right there.

They found a loophole. They just used their businesses and deducted it as "payroll"....

Looking at Boulder Chamber Of Commerce figures alone and discount Denver's, about hard-dollar and soft-dollar amounts per CU Game Day, it makes 10-15% revenue losses reach near million-dollar marks easily every year. And if attendance is reduced by more than 15% of this year's levels, those start reaching over a million dollars a year that's lost.

Just Boulder.

Stadium concessions, parking revenues, tix sales - those are roughly half, and then throw in recreation, hotel and restaurant, then all those taxes, too. Losing a million a year is easily projected. Throw in Denver figures, or Vail and other resorts, and 10-15% attendance reductions can mean $2 million lost.

It's a tough choice. This is part of the AD's job - to distinguish between good and bad coaches, not pay someone else to do it. But if he can abrogate those responsibilities and always blame others, at least he can keep drawing a top salary, too.

Will CU prefer to lose this? And with the greater downward spiral that an underachieving football program has on its ability to recruit, how will local merchants and tax beneficiaries consider support for that program?

I'm pretty certain that you can donate to the "Athletic Department" per say. But not a specific sport.
