Good article in the Post this morning about the state of CU football. It discusses everything from academics to facilities. While everyone admits our facilities have gotten passed by most of the Big XII, most agree that our facilities aren't that horrible. Our academic standards, on the other hand, are a big obsticle. Under Mac, we had the "CU Opportunity Program" and Mac was allowed to bring in questionable kids if he could make a case for them. Mac also had good success in getting those kids to graduate.

Is there any chance that the CU administration will loosen up its standards? While they do make it tough, it still should be possible to be sucsessful despite them. As for facilities, I don't see anything happening in the short term except for the basketball/volleyball center. I've dreamed of a new field house for years but just don't see it happening anytime soon.

Playing sound fundamental football and having teams that are disciplined and coaches that are good on game day has very little, if anything to do with admissions standards. You can have 5* talent across the board and dead in the water if you do things they way they are being done in Boulder right now.

Hard to say. I heard that when Barnett cleaned out his office, he left all the plans for all of the new facilities, upgrades, improvements that were promised him by the admins sitting on top of his desk.

Coach Mac was one of a kind. It was a different time, but Mac was also a hard-nosed blue collar guy who advocated hard for his student-athletes. Hawkins took a play-nice approach with the admin. Got plenty of lip-service about how things were getting better between the FB program and the admins, but at the end of the day was anything really different? I don't think so. That's one of the reasons I was/am hoping so hard for Shanny to be our next coach. If a high profile guy like that with the kind of media footprint he carries started raising concerns, something might get done.

bohn really pissed me off in that article. he says "cu fans expectations are too high. we shouldn't expect to be more than the top half of the big 12, and we shouldn't expect bowl games every year, look at our history". then the ****er writer defends cu's history from the cu athletic director... does anyone else see that as incredibly pathetic? bohn thinks he is at a wac school right now. his goal is "periodically challenging for the north"? barnett was constantly challenging for the north and winning it the majority of the time! bohn clearly doesn't care about winning and his fundraising sucked this year.

i think CJ and fowler are wrong though. people USED to see colorado as a top 25 program. most people nationally think cu is a joke and a bottom dweller right now. way to go hawkins and bohn

and in regards to the thread title, how did tedford get berkely to lower their admission standards for football players? i know they used to have some of the toughest standards for athletes before tedford got there. i agree with klatt btw, i think the academic standards are overhyped. they present a challenge, but not a huge one

If Bohn's goal is to "periodically contend for the north" he should be shown the door. That's pathetic.

Bohn's comments were pathetic and half assing it. Just like this administrations actions toward cu football. Nobody cares. As long as their are no scandals they won't do anything extra to bring a winning program to CU.

Bohn doesn't have a clue about cu's history. He needs to check how many bowl games we went to the previous 20 years before his swing and a whiff got here.

Academic standards are a mirage, using it as a crutch is once again is proving that Hawkins blames others for his own shortcomings.

Take Stanford this year. They have easily the highest academic standards of any D-1 team and they are having success because of great coaching. Recruiting to Stanford has to be a nightmare because probably only 10%-15% of recruits even could make the minimum academic standards. Harbaugh has slowly built a solid program there. Stanford will continue to be a tough place to recruit to, especially since athletic reputation is obviously secondary to the schools academic reputation.

I can't imagine we have tougher academic standards than Michigan (despite being crappy now), California, USC, or Wisconsin.

Also, getting into college for our football players is one thing, but while they are here, I am not sure how much of an effort they really put in. I won't say which football player it is, but one of our better players is in two of my classes and I have seen him maybe at 20% of the class this semester, and the major I have is not an easy major either. If this guy is somehow passing his classes, it really goes to show how much academic standards for athletes really does hold up. I am sure most of the team cuts the majority of their classes and still gets by, and then still ends up with a degree.

Yeah. My kids have been in classes with players. My daughter was in an accounting class with Behrens. He's working on his Masters. But my sons have been in classes with a couple of guys. One would sleep in class. The other came to class with a lady who took all of his notes for him. So, I don't necessarily buy into the academic thing either. But there is something to it. Like Darien says in the article, "We don't accept PE." Most other schools do. But I think having "smart" kids can be a big advantage as well.

If we are going to have "tougher" academic standards to get into the school, they should be pressing the athletes to do better and not be given such leeway. That falls upon the professors as well. Not that I care that much, but I feel they at least should be putting in enough effort to learn something. Showing up to class every once in a while and given exams outside of the class with less material on the exams does nothing but hurt the school. Most of these guys are obviously not going to play in the NFL. Maybe 3 or 4 will make it into the league. It just goes to show how much they really learned while in school when they put in minimal effort. And yet their degree counts as much as mine will in the real world.....there needs to be more consistency. If we are going to suck under Hawkins, we might as well be sucking while the athletes getting a free ride have to work at least somewhat for their degree.

Is it too much to ask for Colorado to play in a bowl and compete for a top 25 spot every year?
"That's what everybody thinks," Hawkins said with a laugh.

Hilarious.

I'm telllng you guys, Bohn is running the AD like a business. As long as business is good, he can care less about wins and losses. Being good on the financial side is good enough for this guy. No need to work harder when you are doing your job just good enough to keep it.

"Nationally, people see Colorado as having enough positives that it's not unreasonable to think they should be in the top 25 and competing for bowl bids, certainly every year," said ESPN "College GameDay" co-host Chris Fowler, a Colorado grad. "The Big 12 North is right there for the taking. That's what's disappointing."

"I don't think CU has among the worst facilities I've seen," he said. "The Dal Ward Center is not an eyesore."

Colorado has been losing the facilities arms race going on 10 years. However, the Buffaloes rarely won it. In their 1990 championship year, the team house was a shack right out of "Tom Sawyer."

"I'm afraid with those excuses continuing to percolate, we'll establish our program as a permanently mediocre program," Johnson said. "And I just refuse to go there."

:yeahthat:

New coach can AND WILL be successful and these excuses will be forgotten. Regression to the mean and we're a top 25 program that spends a lot of Holidays in bowl country. There's no reason we can't be a better program than KU, MU, ISU, TT, and Baylor. A&M is blessed with money, location and support, but hasn't been much better than we have for a long time. Okie State is having a nice run, but it's unlikely they'll sustain success. OU and Texas are the class of the conference that we have to look up to while able to compete with and beat from time to time. Nebraska was a machine, but is a shadow of it's former self. Even Hawk was able to beat them once. A good coach turns this thing around and blows Bohn's expectations out of the water.
