Sonny Dykes - Discuss

I'm not in love with the spread, but Sonny would kick ass. He's been much more balanced at Arizona this year, too. The key with him would be who he hires as defensive coordinator.

Seriously? Go through all this hoopla and expense just to replace Hawk with Sonny Dykes?

I'd rather see Cabral or Embree have the job.

Has one of Dykes' teams ever won a conference championship, or even received a BCS berth? We've really sunk to poaching coordinators from also-ran programs to be our HC?

I am a fan of the Tech offense. The last five years they've been able to keep defenses honest with their running game, too. The RBs in that system have certainly impressed me more this season than ours have. The top half of the Pac-10 is stronger than the Big 12 this year and Arizona has done a tremendous job of competing. I know our expectations should be higher than just competing, but we haven't exactly been doing that under this regime. Baby steps. Very few coaching changes bring an Alabama type renaissance right away.

If Texas Tech was in the Big 12 North they would win it more than not.
I think most here would be ok with that.

I think I have said this before, but I really like Cabral, but there has to be a reason why he has not been pegged for a top job in the past. I don't think he is the answer.

One thing to keep in mind is that Nebraska has had no answer for Sonny's offense when they've played Texas Tech this decade.

Point being: If Sonny Dykes is the answer, I'm not sure I understand the question.

You have to like what Dykes says...some of it is obvoius/coach-speak, but I like the fact that he seems to have a clear vision, a plan, philosophy. His resume is impressive and his father was a darn good coach workign without much talent.

On the philosophy of the offense:

“The philosophy is really to try to score as many point as you can and use the players and the talent you have to the best and get the most out of those guys. I think what you have to do when you go some place, you have to figure out what you’ve got, what the players can do and what is the best way to be successful. As an offensive philosophy that is what we do. We try to get the best 11 guys on the field and in a position where you don’t have to think a lot, you can go out there and play fast and use their abilities and teach them a lot of fundamentals.”
”There is a misconception about our offense that it is a tricky, trick offense and we are trying to trick people. Really what we are trying to do is go out there and out execute people.”
“When I’m off the road recruiting I have to look at the personnel, and then try to figure out the best way to get these guys into position to be successful.” We have to get the ball to these playmakers and go out and make plays.”

I don't know if I like that. Not one hardhat or lunch pail reference.

I can appreciate that comment. I think it's important for a team or offensive or defensive unit to have an identity, one way or another. We're smashmouth, we're running spread, passing spread, we're pro-style, we're triple option. You just need to be someting and it needs to be articulated. I think Hawk was kind of floating around all over the place on the offensive side of the ball. At the beginning of the season they were kind of putting an identity out there, smash mouth. Loads of running backs and a big offensive line. Awesome! But what happened?

I really liked the Gary Barnett's smash mouth 2001 style. Nasty offensive line and powerful running backs. I could go with that.

Teams put 12 guys in the box and dared us to throw the ball. Also, we realized our O Line only looked good because they had been blocking our DL in practice.
