Hawkins dismissal seems like a foregone conclusion...

listening to the radio and perusing the message boards. Would be a shock if he is not let go after the Nebraska game.

One thing bothers/concerns me though. Two people I know that are close to the program threw out Karl Dorrell's name at me independently. One was before the OSU game when I was trying to see if he had heard anything about Hawkins fate - he claimed he had not heard anything and then out of the blue asked me what I thought of Dorrell as a potential HC. It is hard to explain, but it was kind of abnormal for the conversations I had with him in the past - it almost seemed like he was testing for traction with the idea that was not his.

After the OSU game I had a similar experience with someone else that has contacts pretty deep in the University.

I will admit I am not a fan of the Dorrell choice, but I am more concerned that once again Mike Bohn is going to make a hire without doing a decent search and vetting of candidates - which has been Bohn's MO. CU has not had a decent search for a FB coach since Mac was hired. I really don't have a particular front runner for the job but I want CU to really find out which candidate is the right fit for the job (assuming that it becomes open). And regardless of what some will say...this is an attractive job. It has potential to be in the big spotlight.

That worries me. I agree that a lengthy search is what should happen. Bohn should NOT be going out and hiring someone and announcing him the day after Hawk gets fired. He has time to make a list, shorten the list, and finally interview whomever his finalists are.

Dorrell is a guy that scares me. I just think he's probably one of those that is best suited for being a position coach or maybe a coordinator, head coach was not something he did well. Sometimes coaches do better in their second go around, I just don't see Dorrell as a guy that does it.

The Dorrell thing might be a litmus test. A final trial balloon/scare tactic from the AD to see just how serious everyone is about wanting Hawkins gone.

Bohn: "OK, Joe Fan. Are you fed up enough with Hawk that you want him gone even if he ends up being replaced with *gasp* Karl Dorrell?"

Personally, I can't believe the AD would pay out $3.5 million, just so they can bring a UCLA retread on board. Bad investment, IMO.

We all should be concerned whoever bohn chooses, his hires don't exactly have a great track record.

Must be the radio in colorado because espn radio and anywhere outside of colorado, at least here in washington haven't said a peep about hawkins even being in trouble. The most espn has said was fowler during the cu-osu game, other than that not even mentioned with weiss and rodriguez.

I don't recall Karl Dorrell showing any emotion on the sidelines anywhere he has coached. The Colorado program desperately needs a coach who at least inspires the players. I have seen enough of the flat sideline affect for the past 4 years. I see Dorrell as another Hawkins minus the goofy, meaningless comments that he has become famous for. The Colorado program deserves better than this. The tailspin over the past 4 years has caused me to just about give up. The entire program needs a swift kick in the rear end. Dorrell shouldn't even be brought up for discussion.

Karl Dullard (nicknamed by TJ Simers while he was at UCLA) would be a joke of a hire.. The guy couldn't win with all kinds of players in his backyard, how the hell is he going to win at a place where you can't just walk out your door and trip over 15 blue chippers?

I'd take another year of Talkins then a 4 years of Dullard failure..

When you have to put out feelers on a name to see what people think about it, chances are you don't have a good coaching candidate..

I'd take Dorrell over Hawkins, but I am also not giving him 4 years to see if he can make a bowl game.

If they are going with Dorrell though he better be bringing EB and some other assistants that can make this thing work.

Still though, I would hope they can get a better option.

I understand this concern from his previous stops. However at CU, Hawkins and Bzdelik were both viewed universally as great hires. They both have not worked out in the W - L department, so Bohn must take some blame, but he is not clairvoyant.

At the time, Hawk was a hot candidate nationally and seen as a perfect fit for Colorado. Many thought we could not even get Bzz to CU and that he would soon be back in the NBA or a big time program.

Bzdelik though is very well respected across the nation. He has a great reputation and our basketball team appears to be turning the corner. Let's not pin Bzdelik as a failure. He didn't have much to work with when he started at CU. Basketball is going to take longer to build. Hawkins inherited a good situation and royally screwed up.

Dorrell isn't that bad of an option. Not the best, but he's not bad. I tend to think there were inside reasons he was let go from UCLA. He did lead UCLA to 10-2. He is absolutely an improvement over Hawkins. But he should not be the top of the list for Bohn.

If we run into a situation that the Arizona basketball program ran into last year where coaches don't seem to want to come to Colorado, I would settle for Dorrell.

Can we have EB as head coach then?

Dullard's offense did nothing the last two years he was here as Slick's OC...
Slick and Dullard couldnt' get a good QB in here 10 years ago when CU was a very good program.. What makes you think he will find one while we have been down?

Also look at what Dullard left Slick Rick with at UCLA? A rebuilding job. Coaches that can't win with recruiting advantages in your own backyard don't all of a sudden become better coaches in places that are around recruiting hotbeds..

This guy will flop worse than Talkins.. And that's saying something..

NO EMOTION, NO PASSION, NO WINNING if we hire Dullard..

Karl dullard would be a horrible choice. If we are going to do this right, we can't be hiring slick re-treads. He is a good coordinator and that's it.

Would still take him over Hawkins if that were the choice.

How about we search right into February. That ought to really help recruiting. The decision needs to be made quickly and efficiently. Bohn didnt make the Hawkins decision in a vacuum, and at the time Hawkins was a coach that everyone wanted. The guy's resume was impeccible. You guys that act like Bohn was stupid to hire Hawkins, and you would have done it differently, are full of ****.

From what I've read, Dorrell is not a candidate and won't be a candidate for the head coaching job. There was a different scenario that could've brought Dorrell to CU for 2010, but that involved keeping Hawkins. Since we aren't keeping Hawkins, we won't have to worry about Karl Dorrell.

But it also needs to be a thorough search.

I can tell you I did not like the hiring process for the BB coach. The job was open for months and Bohn had one candidate for the job - Bzdelik. And I was never convinced the he was the right guy for the job. We will see how this year goes once they get into conference play.

Im going to start neg repping stupidity, but my gun wont last that long with posts like these.
No ****. He inherited a team with very little recruiting for 2-3 years and an administration that vacillated between ambivalence and animosity towards the program.

Because I certainly implied to search right into February. I don't disagree that Hawk looked like a great hire at the time, it wasn't. After the Rick hiring where what, 2 people were looked at, and Hawks hiring where again, 2 people were looked at, I think Bohn should take awhile before deciding on anyone. Now, to clarify for any outrageous misconceptions, I mean that to be maybe a week or two, not 3 months.

Dude, even with that delay, Air Force complained about tampering. I think Bzdelik was a great hire, CU basketball needed a very sound Xs and Os coach, a recruiter is simply not going to turn CU around. Let Bzdelik pick up some good, not great, recruits and keep them around for a few years and I think we'll like the results. Chauncey Billups comes around once a generation.

I think you need to differentiate yours, and probably all of ours criteria, compared to that of the AD. I think we all want to see a homerun hit like Mike Shannahan or Venebales or another big, big name. Something that really juices and energizes the program (and probably drive ticket sales). But I believe the will above Mike Bohn for that is not there.

Mike Bohn is not an island unto himself. Distefano is internet rumored to be very attached to Hawkins. Distefano seems to place more importance on graduation rates and a squeaky clean program than he does on victories. This would explain the tight enrollment standards following the scandal. I am sure that there is pressure on Distefano right now over this because 3 wins don't sit well with Alums. Dorrell seems to fit the MO of a cost effective, high graduation rate kind of coach that Hawkins became. I believe he did well at UCLA except in the win loss column. But he seems capable of producing 6 wins from time to time, 3 wins better than Hawkins.

My point here is that the CU you and I attended in the late 80s and early 90s seems to not be the same football friendly school it once was. Purely inference on my part but that doesn't sit well with me if true.

If Dorrell is hired I can't see that exciting the fan base. If we become a revolving door as it appears we will the Program will just keep limping along like it has until we get a Gordon Gee type President again. Not everyone noticed Gordon Gee leaving tOSU for Vanderbilt only to go back to tOSU. Was there an academia issue there?

You missed the point...we had time to look at several candidates not just the Air Force coach.

Actually I don't necessarily want a big name. I want the AD to do due diligence in the hiring process, something that does not seem to be in Mike Bohn's makeup. He tends to focus on a single candidate and ignores any warning signs. Eddie Crowder was not a big name, Bill McCartney was not a big name - but in those cases CU went through a process to find the right guy.

Here is my recommended basic criteria for a HC....1. Someone who is known as a great recruiter. 2. Someone who has been mentored in a major BCS program under a top coach. 3. Someone who has held a coordinator position at a BCS school, and 4. Someone who is a fit with the program.

Again, your criteria and mine hinge on this;

Athletic Success > Academic success

Frankly, the greater than symbol has been turned the other way for quite some time now. If they do hire a great recruiter it will be someone who will have to accept eliminating certain kids because they can't get past Distefano's admissions window. I don't believe the will is there with Benson or Distefano to become a football juggernaut again and admit kids like Eric Bienemy and Michael Westbrook and then tolerate their transgressions in the name of gridiron glory.

I believe Distefano will add two requirements to the hire; 1. Must produce high graduation rate. 2. Must be an affordable candidate.

I wish it were different.
