"Mike Bohn does not make any major decision, or for that matter any decision of significance, without the full engagement of campus leadership

DC: Were you told you have to keep Dan Hawkins as your coach?

MB: "No. I engaged, as athletic director, in collaboration with first the chancellor, other leaders on campus.
Distefano and those above him have their stinking short sighted fingerprints all over this...

Re: Hawk's K getting "renegotiated"

DC: Will Dan Hawkins have to make any changes to his coaching staff?
MB: "There are no stipulations associated with Dan's return. However, Dan and I will be reviewing all aspects of the program to look for opportunities for us to improve or enhance the program."

**** this

Re: Hawk's K getting "renegotiated"

God damnit, he mentions grades and APR scores a lot. This one was my favorite:

MB: "I firmly believe that the power of stability comes from continuity and I'm convinced that the commitment from our students athletes to continue to play hard for their coach, despite a lot of public criticism has been consistently demonstrated.

The power of stability comes from continuity? Awesome. Where does the power of winning come from?

it's kind of a tautology. what's the opposing viewpoint, that the power of stability comes from radical, unexpected changes?

the power of peanut butter comes from peanuts?

Re: Hawk's K getting "renegotiated"

what a crock of schiite these morons are dishing out.

I keep coming back here hoping someone has news that's all a big mix up and the Hackins did in fact get fired and the nightmare is finally over, but sadly not so. We are deep in the middle of this night-terror.

"Being a contender in the Big 12" = intentionally vague goal that can arguably be met in several ways. Nice.

Hey, according to the people running the show, we have been "competitive" this year.

If we are going to call our football team "competitive" this year, what do we call a "contender"? 4 wins instead of 3?

Sadly, I am not joking.

Every quote from these people smells of no commitment. They don't care. The only way they will do anything is if they start losing money.

You will also notice that Bohn mentioned that it starts with the division. Is finishing 3rd or 4th in the Big 12 North "contending" or not? My guess is that it probably is in the new CU football climate. Any sort of improvement over 3 wins (assuming a loss tomorrow) will be spun by those in charge as something incredible. It is what it is.

The problems at CU are systematic. You'd think that Bohn's job would be riding, next year, on Juice's success, but I doubt it. The admin my-as-well turn Folsom into a sustainable organic farm, or whatever else will make the inteligencia look FORWARD thinking at their next cocktail party.

What if guys like Fowler, Kordell, and whoever else got on ESPN and just bashed the hell out of the CU admins? Would that help any?

Then most of the posters on here would whine and say they weren't true fans.

**** the leadership up there!

And I know most of you hate this but **** every CU fan that shows up at that game tomorrow and who contributes any money to this crap. You are the problem as much as the leadership is!

Tim and others that agree with him:

Please consider something important that I believe you are missing. Which college football programs are the ones least likely to tolerate poor-to-mediocre results from their Head Coach? Are they the ones that sell out every game and get consistently large booster support? Or are they the ones with apathetic fans and poor booster support?

I'm of the belief that the only way to ensure a culture at CU that demands winning is to become a much stronger fan base. That not showing up and not contributing financially simply makes it easier for the CU administration to de-emphasize athletics.

Do you honestly think these people are trying to win? Do you really think that when you donate your X-thousands of dollars next year that it will motivate them to do something different? They are running this thing as a business and if you keep buying tickets and donating, what is their motivation to make a change and put a winner out there?

I am proud of my degree and the work I did up there, but I am done supporting people who accept losing the way this team did this year and do nothing to change it. If I am going to watch sports in this town, there are plenty of of other places to spend my sporting dollar.

It's not even the losing that bothers me, it was the way they did it.

I absolutely believe they are trying to win.

I don't believe they are demanding it or emphasizing it to the level of other programs in the Big 12 (or Mountain West, for that matter).

But I don't believe that withholding my support will make them care more about football. Only a powerful fan and booster network can change anything. We stop supporting, those in the administration and on the faculty who don't like sports (or barely tolerate them) win.

I do believe, however, that we need to pool into a non-profit AD booster fund that is able to make demands along with the money we make available to the AD. This is in the works.

The key in your post is" I don't believe they are demanding it or emphasizing it to the level of other programs in the big 12".

You don't see a problem with this? How are you going to compete and tell recruits your here to win a big 12 championship if you don't commit and try as much as the other teams in your conference?

This sends a bad message in my opinion.

The last part of your post, that would be a good thing.

Syko,

I have a huge problem with it. We will not win championships or draw top talent until we fix this. I'm just advocating a different approach than Tim - to be the type of rabid fan base that the administrators and politicians can't ignore.

I understand, but have we ever had a rabid fan base? When salaam was going for 2000 yds vs ISU back in 94, I was walking around the stadium and there must have been 1-2,000 empty seats and this was with a team that was 11-1.

Say fans sell out each game, donations increase and the same product is put out on the field, you think they will commit to winning then? Do they just count the cash and say, they'll come no matter what?

The comments by the 3 of them make it very hard to believe they are going to do anything to help make this program a success.

The reasons they gave for keeping him were about graduation rates, grades, and not getting arrested. This kind of crap goes without saying. Football coaches are judged by wins and losses and as long as he keeps getting supported financially, they aren't going to change squat because why should they?

Are you saying that they can ignore the empty seats next year or the sea of Red tomorrow?

Money talks and Bull**** walks. Guess who is showing up at the game tomorrow along with all those truck drivers from out east. People with money saying they are fine with what is going on.

It's called the pussification of a program. When you promise 10 wins, and get 3-you have to fall back on something, and that's all they have.

This is what happens when you hire a daddy & let him bring his little boy along to play qb.

Yup. I'm afraid it'll take another 10 years to get away from that line of thinking. We're still too close to all that crap from the scandal.

I think that may be the problem then... Our guys need to start hanging out at the BusStop more and less at the soup kitchens and hospitals. Give me a winner on the football field and leave the community service stuff to the GLBT club!

I've listened to some of the boosters discuss this topic at several of the games this year. I agree with the concept, but as one of the boosters that sits behind me said, there would need to be strict oversight by the doners as to how the $$$ gets administered. As hard as that pool of $$$ would be to resist, I'm not sure if the AD would buy into that?

They'll ignore the empty seats. Bohn is the only one who cares about that (and recruiting and boosters and winning). But his opinion barely matters. DiStefano and Benson are playing for hundreds of millions of dollars with the state, feds and corporate partners for the university. All they care about is that the AD doesn't do anything scandalous to scare that money away (or politically damaging like buying out a coach at a time when they're begging the state and feds for tax money). All the empty seats are going to do is weaken an already weak AD. When the CU AD still hasn't paid off the previous loan that covered the GB buyout and budget shortfalls, you can't be boycotting and withholding donations. In fact, that's just ensuring that the AD loses money going forward and has to borrow more from the university. This is not going to accomplish anything except to further tilt the balance of power toward the ivory tower and make sure that we never win again. Give the AD money for resources (facilities, academic support, coach salaries, etc.) and we've got a chance to win in spite of the CU administration.

Edit: What needs to happen is for donors who usually give to the various schools to tell DiStefano and Benson that they are either withholding their donation or giving it to the AD instead (since the school is no longer properly supporting athletics). That would get their attention.
