Reason for hope

OK, enough of all this negative ****. How about trying to focus on positives? (I'm sure this thread will be hijacked by the naysayers )

First, I was listening to GB on Wednesday. He felt like it would be a mistake for CU to make a change and pointed out how programs can get into a cycle of changing staffs every few years. That being said, how about some reason for hope?

COACHING
Hawk has ****ed it up to this point. But he was a highly sought after candidate when we hired him. There has to be something there. The hope is that he has learned from his mistakes here, like overestimating how we would perform this year. He will refocus, make the necessary changes in the staff, and turn this thing around

PLAYER'S EXPERIENCE
I know, "no excuses." Well, like it or not, this team was young almost across the board. This year was tough in a lot of ways. But sometimes walking through the fire makes one grow up a bit faster. I heard that something like 70 to 75 kids were freshmen/sophomores this year. (Actually, that was a quote from a Colorado HS commit).

QUARTERBACK
I don't know about you guys, but Tyler Hansen has shown a lot of improvement. The game is slowing down for him. I think next year he'll be really good.

RECEIVERS
This will be a strength next year. Simas, Clemons, Jefferson, and Simmons will be really good, IMO.

RUNNING BACK
Stewart and Lockridge will be solid and, hopefully, Mister Jones will be an ass kicker! With improvement of the O Line, our running game should improve.

OFFENSIVE LINE
They were a huge disappointment this year. The youth and continual change in coaches has hurt. But if there is one position which requires experience, it is with the big guys up front. There is a reason why freshmen rarely start on the O line. I say the Oline will be greatly improved next year. Plus, hopefully, Mariner will return fully recovered.

TIGHT END
Deehan will be really good. We need some others to step up.

DEFENSIVE LINE
The D line looked pretty good this year, and they were young. Just like the offensive linemen, defensive linemen need more time to grow than at other positions. Next year, they will be strong.

LINE BACKERS
Major, Beatty, Rippey, and Sipili should be good. But I have to admit, LB will take a hit losing Smart and Mohler. I think LBs should be solid and we have one of the best LB coaches in the buisness

DEFENSIVE BACKS
Not a lot of depth, but Smith, Brown, and Polk (with a year under his belt)
should be solid.

SPECIAL TEAMS
I've heard Grossnickle can really punt and Goodman looks a lot better this year. First year he missed. This year he is hitting the uprights. Next year he'll be nails!!

CHEER LEADERS
I hear we have some great incoming freshwomen!!

Anyway, I admit, I'm not nearly as "up" on the players as a lot of you guys. Many of you go to practices when you can and stuff. So my take is more of an "outsiders" view.

i'm also optimistic about the development of Hanson. maybe the staff, with a year to work on structuring "the offense" (like it's a single, stable thing despite evidence to the contrary)....to fit TH. no reason he couldn't be very effective running the zone read/lotta QB draw/high % passing game like UT runs with McCoy.

There are certainly a lot of reason why this team should be good next year.

I like Hansen a lot, but he is still going to be relatively inexperienced heading into next season. I think Buffs fans should be prepared for some struggles early on next season now that opposing teams have a lot of film to pick through. I think he should be rolling by the end of the season.

As far as the offensive line, Spring ball will be very telling. At some point, this staff has to pick five guys and stick with them. Part of the issue with our inexperience is that we seem to rotate in new guys about every two games. There is not a whole lot of cohesiveness there. That said, I think a starting five of Solder, MTM, Behrens (move him to center), Miller, and Givens could be pretty good. The key is MTM being healthy and actually addressing the center position, Stevens is simply not a Big 12-caliber center.

Love it!

As far as Hawkins going or staying, this is my opinion on this Beautiful GameDay Beat Nebraska Morning:

If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with.

Could this thread actually get to 10 posts without a whiner jumping in?

Same stuff we heard before this season...you know, when most CU fans thought we'd be back in the Top25.

Hawkins kills all hope.

Folsom on game day in September and October is a great place. Those Dawg fans who travel to Boulder will get an eye full. Hope they bring UGA.

CSU loses a lot of o-line talent and a senior QB. There'll be a little chip on CU's shoulder after the 2009 dance on ralphie episode.

The Cal game is a great road destination. I look forward to checking out Boulder by the Bay. Snapping that road skid isn't likely, but it would be frosting.

Hawaii at home is ripe for the taking.

The B12 is going to be tough. KU will be softer with Mangino and Reesing and Meier gone. There's a road win in the North.

If Hansen develops some chemistry with the WR's and the O-Line gels, maybe CU climbs out of the basement and shocks a team or two.

Jim Armstrong says it way better than I could:

"Player attrition has left CU painfully inexperienced at several key positions, including the offensive and defensive lines and wide receiver. How inexperienced? Consider this: The Buffs went into the season with one wideout, Scotty McKnight, who had caught a pass in a CU uniform. Or this: 2009 marks the first season since 1982 in which the Buffs haven't started a senior on the offensive line."

Armstrong's Column

This team just needs to learn how to win. We were within 3 of WVU going into the 4th quarter in Morgantown. We led Texas after 2 1/2 quarters. We were up on Okie State by 11 in the second half in Stillwater. I think that when we learn how to sustain momentum, we will turn the corner.

Damn right. I didn't want Hawk back, but now that he is, I'm ready to support him and hope for the best -- starting today. Let's kill Nebraska!

Ha ha. I like how the cheerleaders made the list. o_O

Tyler Hanson has looked much better than Cody this year. For the most part he makes the plays he should make, and I will never take that for granted.
We absolutely will have the talent to win ANY game we play. We just have to get a different mentality. We come out thinking , "Let's try to win." instead of "Let's Roll !"

You are truly wise, old man!

That is huge for this team, they need to learn how to start and finish the game. The same goes for the coaching staff too....

Against Okie St., the coaching staff "over coached" because of their lack of confidence.

I posted something similar awhile back, I was hoping they'd have some fresh new coaching leading them, but the talent is there I think. As much as it pisses me off that we got to this point, we are quite young. Who knows maybe a new DC that doesn't get lit up a handful of times a year and continuity on offense is the key. I can't be too depressed right now since it's gameday. Beat the Huskers Hawk!

QB- Hansen seems to be improving a little bit and you would think after spring and fall it will be a positive for 2010

RB- Speedy is the guy but CU needs a Big back to compliment stewart.

WR- Simas is a stud, mcknight solid.clemons, simmons, jefferson, wright, ussery, should be improved next season and much more depth.

TE- Deehan's time to shine, depth but not much experience behind him.

OL- Once again it all hinges on this group. Despite experience, until they can be more consistent, this will be the biggest question mark.

DL- Need DE help and depth. Cunningham and pericak have played decent, bonsu should make a jump. Still an area that needs to be upgraded.

LB- Major, beatty, sipili and rippy is a solod group if they stay healthy.

DB- Starting four of brown, smith, perkins and polk is a strength, depth will be an issue.Hoping olatoye and vigo step up.

ST- Must improve in all area's.

COACHING- Either hawk learns or he never will. Other than the OL, biggest weakness heading into 2010.

Intangibles- Tough road schedule, need to see off-season and what attrition/transfers we have if there are any. This will be a much more experienced team.
