like most, I'm HUGELY disappointed MB didn't pull the trigger.

What happens when guys like Burney Burton and Smart aren't on D?

I fear most of the fire this team has leaves when the last of the GB guys leave. I think Jonathon Hawkins might be the last GB guy around.

At times, the team looks as soft as a Hostess cupcake, and I think that is a function of the leadership/coaching style. The team all too often looks flat.

Who's going to provide the spark next year?

Herrod on D needs to show the intensity to be a leader; we know he can bring it on the DL. At LB we have Ginger Fury.

On O we have Scotty, Miller and Solder as guys that are 4 years (even 5?) years in the program. Miller had a chip on his shoulder his frosh year. I'm hoping he shows that intensity again. Givens will be a leader and will be fiery year after next; he just needs to keep the penalties in check.

I'd say the same thing about BJ - love that guy's fire, but his zest for getting to the QB lead to several costly off sides penalties.

Well I think we're all upset we don't have the optimistic idea of a new coach this season, but it is what it is. Let's just hope that if Hawk fails again, he will actually be gone.

As far as leaders on the team I think we will be alright. Givens and Miller could be the mean streak OL to get everyone fired up. I'm hoping Hansen builds on whatever leadership he currently has, being the QB he has to be the leader on the field. McKnight should be a good leader judging by his personality and his pedigree. On defense I think it'll be up to our LBers. Beatty should be good, Sipili, maybe one of the younger guys. Hopefully Polk learned from Burney and brings the fire next year.

Givens was probably the worst with his 30-yarder at ISU, but we had 34 (yes, 34--I counted) false starts this season, and they didn't improve as the season went on, having more in the last game than the first. That is just ridiculous.

The other issue that MUST change is punt coverage. At least 3 punts were returned for TDs, that has to be some sort of CU record for a season.

Beyond those things, the team HAS to be better next year given so many returning starters, doesn't it?

That's why we need someone on the OL to step it up and step it up big. We cannot have that many false starts and we need someone on the field to do his job and make sure everyone is doing their part. The discipline starts from the top though and trickles down to the guys on the field. An on field leader is only good as his coaches (position, coordinators, HC) teach him and allow him to be.

That's what I thought this year. It's not the players IMO, it's the milk and cookies, losing is part of winning BS the coaches have the kids buy into.

Everything surrounding punts needs to get much better. Last in the conference in punt average. Last in punt return average. The TDs you mention, and also you can go ahead and add in a blocked punt for TD as well.

Also agree on the false starts. It is one thing to get "effort" penalties, but pre-snap penalties are mostly inexcusable. It shows a lack of focus and discipline. The other thing that coincides with false start penalties is how haphazardly our plays develop before the snap. Getting in the play is slow, huddling is slow, etc. I have never seen a team snap the ball so many times with less than three seconds on the play clock.

that's a great point.

That has been going on for over a year, and we almost never have all our time outs at the end of the game because of this problem. How can they have an entire offseason, two different OCs, and still not figure this out?

This whole thread is starting to piss me off all over again:huh:

I think D could be a strength next year if we retain all of our non-graduating players and Major, Rippy and Kasa can contribute. Major and Kasa definitely look ready to go.

Our DL should be alot better with this past season of experience under their belt, and another offseason of growing and strength & conditioning.

LB's we lose alot of experience from Burton and Smart, but will be alot more athletic with Beatty, Major, Rippy, Sipili, and possibly if Webb or Nobriga can chip in too.

At CB we have top level talent with Smith and Brown returning but little experience behind them. The Safeties will be interesting with Burney gone. Polk, Perkins, and Mahnke all played alot during the season with Polk becoming the starter and an off-season to develop will only help him. At SS, however, not sure who will fill that spot. Possibly Perkins or Mahnke but maybe Sandersfield, Ewing, or even redshirt frosh Orms.

8 returning starters is great as long as the coaches can get them to play better, especially the big plays against us.

How good Cunningham/Pericak/Bonsu play will be the crucial factor to the defense in 2010, just as it was this past year.

I really like that we have alot on the offense returning, and the depth of talent at WR especially.

I don't think the issues with the team have ever really been about talent. It's all about the coaches getting the most out of the talent we have, developing discipline, and play-calling. And since we look to be returning our coaching staff, that's the problem.

Lombardi, in his Bohn interview, mentioned the Simas 56 yard reception and the fact that Simas could have gained more yardage but chose to run OB. He mentioned to Bohn that he couldn't believe Hawkins did not get in his face and that Hawkins seems to be more laid back than in previous years. Bohn said that the staff realizes that they need to be more fired up. FWIW. We'll see.

ya, I remember hugh charles getting chewed the **** out for doing that. Has Hawk started taking xanax pills to deal with the stress?

All players should get chewed the **** out for that unless they are a QB or they need to stop the clock. This is football and every inch can make a difference. You go hard until someone stops you. And who knows, maybe the guy misses the tackle and you walk into the endzone. I can't stand people giving up on a play.

Simas does need to fight for yards better but as far as I can see he is the best player on our team so... I guess it doesn't really bother me that much?
