WSJ Article on Oregon/OSU game tonight.

Oregon and Oregon State have figured out how to recruit out-of-state (in particular Texas,) why can't we?!?!

I can see why they can pull from Cali the way they do because they can sell that they're friends and family will be able to watch them on TV during the Pac-10 schedule.

Same theory should apply to us with Texas kids, but yet....arrrgggghhh...

The answer to your question is simple: Mack Brown.

He could sell sand in the desert. Before him we were losing everyone.

Roger that, I can accept the fact that we'll lose the majority of Texas 5* and 4* to Mack (and the rest of the TX programs) but I was talking about the theory presented by the article that UO and OSU are taking the underrated guys that the local programs don't even take a sniff at.

Consider LaMichael James for UO. When asked how he ended up at UO from Houston, he said he just wanted out of Texas. Where was CU in recruiting him???? And considering that we have done well with 2-3* guys like Chap, Jalil, and Jimmy Smith seems to me there's fruit to be had here in Texas, yet we're not getting it!

That's a good point. I think bottom line CU needs a coach that can recruit in TX, to get in line in the peckign order. Instead of guys going to Texas Tech, A&M, TCU, Baylor they need to go to CU. CU needs to cut in line. I think Hawk, being from CA and coaching in ID leans heavily towards CA to the detriment of TX recruiting.

Go beavers! I don't get why everyone says Oregon has the hottest cheerleaders.

Texas-gets their choice

Oklahoma-recruits the H#ll out of the state

Okie State-Same

A&M-finds ways to keep people at home

Tech-fun offense.....if your an athlete where do you go?

Baylor-improving/better than CU at the moment. The "home" factor

TCU-again....what can we do besides claim we are Big 12 and if they want that look at the teams above.

Houston- if I am a WR I would take a strong look at playing in that offense or would I rather have Cody slinging me the ball?

i guess my point is that it is so much harder to get kids out of Texas than it used to be....

It is more than just winning. The staff has struggled to establish recruiting relationships in Texas. We were finally making headway with Grimes until he left. We actually were getting attention from Texas top 100 players. Now we are back to square one with Denver Johnson. We are cultivating contacts again, but we still struggle to get much attention from top 100 players. If we really want become contenders in the Big 12 again, we need to start getting some of those guys to Boulder.

LSU will attract a good chunk of the top tier talent from TX as well. They are close enough to home, especially for the Houston area kids.

Oddly enough Miami (FL) is really great at consistently picking top athletes out of TX.

Add Missouri to that list. They have been getting better and better at establishing a pipeline into Texas and have replaced the "second tier" that we used to hold onto.

Pelini has Nebraska focused more on Texas than the school has done in a while as well.

While I'd agree we have to strengthen the ties to Texas and do better there, the reality is that Oregon State and Oregon really aren't doing that. A quick glance at their rosters shows almost ZERO Texans.

Oregon State has the Rodgers brothers who came there serially, and it's a great story. But it's not like they have a pipeline there. They are focused on California like all the Pac-10 schools because Mom and Dad can watch them on TV.

Which is why CU needs to focus on Texas. We aren't within a drive of Dallas like the Texas and OKlahoma schools, but throw in LSU, Arkansas, and now SMU as contenders for kids. Still - there's a lot of talent to go around. This staff's ties have been in California and we really need to expedite building the bridge to Texas.

Neuweasel really screwed us in this area IMO. The minute he came in, he cleared house of all the guys who knew Texas and almost solely focused on SoCal. Not that there aren't great guys out of Cali, but they definitely have a different attitude than the kids coming out of Texas I think.

So we end up losing all the contacts we had in Texas, GB started to re-establish them and almost got them back to where they were before (I think) while Kansas, Missouri, Neb, Okie Lite and those of that ilk started to move in.

Then Hawk comes in, contacts go away (again!) and now the other programs have firm in roads down here and we're re-establishing AGAIN!

Madness, I tell you, MADNESS!:cry:

That's not true. Neuheisel recruited Texas like crazy. Andre Gurode. Cedric Cormier. Miles Koon. Three of the top players in Texas signed with Colorado in 1997.

LtCol:
Got me there...thanks for the reminder. I was in Nuke Power School and prototype followed by a submarine deployment during that time. Guess I lost track...

Arkansas pulls 7-10 3* and 4* guys in from Texas, a few of which every year are from the state's top 100, on an annual basis as well. That being said, there is still plenty of talent to go around, and CU should hopefully be able to get into Texas and pull a couple of guys out of there every year.

I think we're actually in a pretty good position to recruit. We can recruit both Texas and California, we just need to get back into Texas. There are a lot of schools that aren't nearly as fortunate, geographically speaking. Take the Oregon schools for example, they have to make a living in California/Hawaii/Arizona/Utah/Nevada. We can recruit those places on top of Texas/Ohio/Louisiana etc. Not saying we're doing a great job of it, just saying our recruiting shouldn't ever suffer due to lack of options.

Yep.

I actually like the way Mack Brown recruits Texas, because he locks down his kids early. It creates clarity for the rest of the kids that know they aren't going to Texas, so now what.

OU and Okie State will always pull better due to proximity and also playing 2-3 Big XII South games in Texas every year.

What really hurts us is when OU and Texas take away the few 4 and 5 star players from the state of Colorado, then we are going backwards with not being able to pull from Texas but losing our elite players.

I know CU can recruit Texas better than we have been, while still getting good kids from Cali.

I wish that the A.D. had more direct control over the recruiting coordinator so that coaching changes wouldn't set us back so far. Maybe make Hagan a permanent recruiting coordinator for football, that works with, but not for, the Head Coach.
