Anyone hear about the finish to Fresno State-Illinois?

Fresno State won the game on a two-point conversion with less than five seconds left, 53-52.:wow: To top it off, the two-point conversion was scored on a tipped ball that ended up being caught by an offensive lineman. I think that is what you call Zook'd.

Sounds like a good game. Almost put it on my watch list today cuz Fresno games are usually exciting but didn't.

Is that Zookers last game at Illinois?

yeah saw the highlight, it was awesome, CU use to have luck that allowed us to win close games like that.

I hope that good luck returns someday.

That Rose Bowl year must be what saved him because aside from that season, he's done very poorly at Illinois. And they had some fairly high expectations coming into this season.

i believe he has recruited very well to illinois.

2006-30th
2007-20th
2008-23rd
2009-35th
2010-51st (so far)

It appears he has been a good recruiter with four classes in the top 35.

while that is not bad, i was under the impression that his classes were a bit higher than that. say the 11-20 range for most of his time there.

anyway, that has always seemed to be the knock on him. good recruiter but cant coach his way out of a wet paper bag.

hmmm. can he coach Dline?

He has mostly specialized as a secondary or special teams coach in addition to being defensive coordinator for several different teams. I am sure he will be in high demand if he gets fired after the 2010 season.

I think it is pretty good when you consider that Illinois does not have that big of a home-state recruiting base and mostly plays second fiddle to Notre Dame in the Chicago market. But yeah, the knock on him has always been coaching, his recruiting has never been the issue.

i would think ND is the least of his problems. in that area you have OSU, Iowa, Minni, Michigan, knu, Mizzou, tennessee within a reasonable geographic area to recruit against. to pull in those types of classes is impressive, imo. plus, champian, Ill cant be much different than south bend, Ind in terms of location/weather.

Actually Illinois is a really good recruiting hotbed. Over the last 4 years they have produced talent comparable to Virginia and Louisiana. Chicago has always been an "underrated" but deep talent pool.

Add to that Zookers Florida/Georgia pipelines and he has pulled in better talent than the Illini have seen in quite awhile.

There is talent there, but Virginia and especially Louisiana are much deeper than Illinois in football talent. Louisiana might be the deepest state in high school football talent after the Big Three (CA, FL, and TX) and OH.

No diss on Louisiana as I think it seriously underratted. But Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Alabama, New Jersey, and North Carolina all produce more "BCS" level talent every year.

Georgia and Ohio are pretty clear cut 4 and 5 between the two of them. After that there is a mix of states that fill out the top 10 depending upon the year.

We will have to disagree then for the most part. I forgot about Georgia, so I agree there, but Louisiana is not far behind and it is not underrated either. Everyone knows there is talent there. AL, NJ, and NC all have talent, but they're all a notch below Louisiana on a consistent basis.

Gotcha.

Would you say Louisiana > Ohio ?

just curious on your take.

Nah, Ohio and Georgia are pretty much the same, like you said with Louisiana a notch below. FWIW, there was an analysis done several years ago that showed Lousiana puts the most players in the NFL of any state in the country per capita. Pretty amazing actually. Also, the 2011 class down there is supposed to be sick. Perhaps as many as four 5* players.

Nice. didn't see that analysis. Football is big down there but I think it goes "overlooked" as compared to the other southern states from other FBS colleges. Since LSU is the only big time program in the state, alot of the talent has to go out of state to play big time college football.

Louisiana has one of the best state-funded college opportunity programs, so it is hard for kids to want to leave the state.

I think alot of them must still make it despite going through places like Tulane, Louisiana Tech, Lafayette/Monroe and the smaller schools like Grambling, McNeese State and NW State.

They probably lost a notch or two due to the hurricanes as that really has impacted the current generation of school kids pretty bad, especially in New Orleans, to the futher benefit of Houston, TX.
