Out of state alums, join me in suspending financial support

I never thought I'd reach this point, but I'm putting a stop to all financial support. I believe any dollar I send is an endorsement of the current policy. Coloradans are allowing this **** to continue by their lack of action at the ballot box, why should you continue to be the patsy?

Ballot box? Benson, DiStephano, Bohn, and Hawkins are not elected officials. If you're referring to TABOR, that's been on the books for a very long time.

Mostly refering to TABOR. If the citizenry won't pay their fair share, why should I?

I don't even care anymore. everyone do what they think will help. Maybe something will work.

yep, this is defintly the quickest route to getting us competitive again.

I don't know, BF. I've always thought the idea of starving the budget is counterproductive. But right now it looks like the administration is ok with allowing this debacle to continue. I'm not sure having the AD short on funds could do any more damage than what is already happening....

Fanatic, I understand the contradiction. I guess I have finally move to the negative camp. In other words, no change will happen until CU feels in the wallet.

Yep. The program is in a really precarious position right now. I am definitely giving up the season tickets and I will not pay full price for any games I do decide to attend (probably 2-3).

I don't blame ya bud. Enjoy the top notch seats you will find on craigslist next year for 1/2 of the price:thumbsup:

already there

ehhhh, to each their own. I personally think its the dumbest thing ive ever heard, but, i think of most of you as some of the biggest fans I know, so, certainly its what you think will help the most in the long run. just differing opinions.

While I cannot tell you what to do with your $$$$....

(and believe me, I understand).

Financial support for CU is completely unrelated to TABOR.

TABOR has to do with impeding economic recovery once our local and nation's economic growth has re-ignited.

It has nothing to do with Benson's or Di'Stephano's desire to make CU an Ivy League school of the Rockies....

As I understand it, CU gets very little financial support from the State of Colorado, to such a degree that the university is considering going "private".

As I understand it, CU is the only school in the BIG XII (possibly the country) that offers only 1 year contracts to its assistants.

As I understand it, CU is the only university that bills its athletic dept. at "out of state" rates for its scholly athletes.

As I understan it, the AD and Chancellor are on record as saying that finishing in the top half of the Big XII and going to bowl games more years than not is the goal.

As I understand it, CU has had 4 losing years in a row, and no staff changes are expected.

As I understand it, the head coach might have, sorta said "10 wins and no excuses" before going 3-9.

My reality, I get a call once a month asking for another donation. I won' t anymore. Sorry.

Hey, now that we've lost any hope of landing top in-state recruits, how about a name change? Colorado Flatliners (you know, Flatirons, with a Hawkins twist)

I'm disappointed with the way things are right now, but I encourage people to keep providing money to CU. They need it. If you went to CU and are dong okay, I think you owe something to the institution that helped you get there. Sure, you might have worked hard, paid CU a lot of tuition money, but still, without the greater collective entity of CU, you would have had to go another route - perhaps without the same results. I'm not going to stop giving money to CU in light of our athletic struggles. I understand if you stop contributing to the Athletic Department, but don't stop giving to CU. Give to scholarships, etc.

If I thought the administration would listen to reason, Hawk would already be gone. What other voice do we have at this point?

It's disrespectful to athletes in other sports to pull the plug on CU funding because of the football program. Jenny Barringer is the best CU athlete in a generation. No way I'm turning my back on XC/Track. I want to see Colorado athletes in London in 2012.

I was right there with you until they kept Hawk. I can't stomach the thought of the school that I love having such a limp wristed attitude towards its athletic department. As much as it hurts me to do it, I'm withholding my annual donation. Admitedly, it's not a ton, but it's something. I have come to the conclusion that until they feel it in areas not associated with athletics, they won't have any incentive for change. The foundation will do fine without my contribution, but it won't do as well as it could have done.

I was a big advocate against cutting funding, but I'm willing to admit I was wrong, the AD and school have their heads up their ass right now and need to wake up and realize this whole situation smells like ****.

TABOR has to do with subjecting tax increases to a public vote. I'm lost as to how tax increases might help an economic recovery but that's another topic for another venue. :smile2:

TABOR keeps the politicians in check and Colorado underfunded CU long before TABOR came along. It would pretty simple to author a ballot initiative and ask the voters to raise taxes to chose to fund higher education. I would prefer this over a legislative introduced request because as soon as it gets funded the politicians will divert it to their pet projects. TABOR, in most years, has kept the politicians focused on laws and problems and kept them from stealing.

I agree with your premise that hurting them in the donations department does send a message. I suggest writing out your check, photocopying it, and mailing to them with the following note; "When Dan Hawkins is replaced I will mail you this check".

Like Sacky said, when they call asking for your $$$. Ask them if Hawkins is still the coach. (you know the answer) When they say yes, you tell them to call you back when he's no longer the coach. That's what I did and I havn't heard back from them since. At some point, those kind of responses are going to eventually get the message to those who only understand one thing. $$$ talks, BS walks.

I intend to do the same thing when they send out there donation letters and e-mails.

Im pretty sure the people making these calls are doing it from a database that lets them enter notes. They keep metrics on the call placers to see who is successful and who isn't. Works the other way to see who is and who isn't donating and why.

Hell, if it happens enough the callers might start fudging the Hawkins excuse to justify their numbers being down.

My call came from the Biz school....I told them I was not contributing because of Danny's retention....not sure if my "message" will have any impact or not. The Biz school may have one less scholarship to hand out to a deserving person...

CU gets about 8% of its annual operating budget from the state. Colorado ranks 48th in state support for its institutions of higher ed.

As I understand it, CU is the only school in the BIG XII (possibly the country) that offers only 1 year contracts to its assistants.

Mandated by state law ... and CSU is constrained by the same statute.

I got two in college so I donate via tuition - I will however be very reluctant to travel to a game in Boulder - its sad enough on TV

Sounds good. I loved CU for so long, but I have such a low opinion of the university at the moment. The last couple of things I got in the mail from CU they were immediately tossed in the trash.
