Mike Stoops' turnaround of Arizona...

A friend of mine is a big AZ fan and we got to talking about Brownie joining their staff. He said the boards were screaming to oust Stoops after his 4th year, as there were no signs of progress. The situation Stoops inherited had ok recruiting classes before him and all 4(5) classes were full of recruits. Still it was year's 5 and 6 before anyone thought they had progress. Now he's a hero.

From the Arizona website:

2004 Head Coach (3-8)
2005 Head Coach (3-8)
2006 Head Coach (6-6)
2007 Head Coach (5-7)
2008 Head Coach (7-5) plus a bowl win
2009 Head Coach (8-4) bowl game to be played

He claims that they were really angry by year 4 as they were playing a lot of JR's and SR's and felt the replacements weren't as good as what they were losing....

I believe Stoops also made some coaching changes to his offense during that time..

Its a somewhat similar situation but this years recruiting class so far will set the program back..

So as long as we can find some program that has done as poor or more poorly as CU we should stay the course...lovely.

Yay, maybe we can be Arizona! What an awesome program to try to emulate.

last I checked we haven't been too good since Lisa Simpson had her day in court. Arizona is considered on the rise at 8-4 with a win over USC.

Currently ranked #20 in the BCS polls......

I'd love to be where they are at in 2 years. And yes, they couldn't recruit jack-sh_t in year 4 either because Stoops was a lame duck. The bulletin boards were on fire, just like here.

Facts are facts. CU's got a young team that's played like crap. But it wouldn't blow some of the old-timers away to see them have a 7-5 season next year and guess what, they'd lose almost nothing off of that team either. Speedy, Simas, Hansen, the core of the O-Line are back two more years. I know it's not a popular opinion and I'm as frustrated as anyone. But I'm also looking at facts and realizing we are dealing with kids that are 18-20 years old.

We are not going from where we were to top 10 in 4 years. We aren't getting there in 8 years. Yes, if Nick Saban or Urban Meyer came here, that'd happen. But they are not coming here. This will take time and although I've seen not one iota of proof it's going to happen, I also haven't seen proof it isn't. By mid-season next year, I'll be convinced one way or the other as will the AD.

So yes, you morons, I am comparing us to Arizona. The NC game was nearly 20 years ago. Colorado has not been relevant in college football since I moved here 14 years ago. Get over it.

You guys should trust buffaholic. His sources are the best on this site so STFU.

I'd be happy with 7-5 next year provided that he starts recruiting up to Big 12 standards.. You have to keep building the program through recruiting to get the program to go forward.. This year Hawk is not getting the job done.

We have not been relevant in the 14 years he has lived here, yet you can find three top finishes and another top 20 finish in that timeframe. Seems "relevant" enough for me.

Nor did he get the job done last year. The depth he should be building through the 2008, 2009, and 2010 classes is going to be pretty bad a couple years from now.

You'd think he would have time now that he doesn't have to deal with emails.

8-4 ranked 20th is nice, we're capable of better, but you know better than I do. I'm sorry if breaking the 8 win barrier once in 6 years doesn't really get me excited. There are a lot of programs, that are like ours, that are a lot better than Arizona.

You've seen no proof? What on earth do you call what was happened the last 4 years, to the tune of 33 times?

Not relevant? We were one early season screw up and a crappy system from being in the national championship game in 2001. How is that not relevant? I assume you mean relevance in the idea that we aren't in that top 10/15 of college football teams that are a staple at the top. USC/Texas/Oklahoma/LSU/Alabama/Florida/Ohio State etc. No we aren't there nor will we likely ever be, but we were a pretty good program for awhile there, Rick ****ed us and Barney was subpar, but your boy Hawk is really driving us into the ground.

Yes, we all realize you compared us to Arizona, we're disputing that notion, you moron.

Not relevant. 2001 was a phenomenal year, but in this study we'd also call that year an outlier. We followed up 2001 with three more winning years of the next four. 2003 played out disappointing and similar to the 2008 Buffs season, but 2002, 2004 and 2005 were years more akin to Stoops' most recent two years at Arizona. Except in those years we also took advantage of a terrible North division to go to the Big 12 Championship and again, in those three seasons, got waxed by our competition.

Do an informal survey of both casual and die-hard fans of any college football program with 80+ wins this decade. Ask them if Colorado Buffaloes football is relevant.

2001 was a very good year, but does anyone really think we could hang that year vs. Texas if we played them again. They spanked us during the regular season, we then nipped them in the championship game and then got spanked again by Oregon. It was the one glimmer of something "really good" returning here and it got worse every year. Yes, GB won some league titles, but only to be fed to the much better teams from the South. To me, that's called detoriation.

And yes, the last couple classes are Boise State, TCU like on paper. Maybe they are Temple on paper - we have to see what the staff does with these guys. There's some schools winning games with low rated classes. I don't expect much more than that in terms of recruiting rankings from the current state of the program.

Boulder Buff - why are you so indictive because I have a positive tone and want to support the Buffs no matter what? Even I am near the edge on Hawkins but I also see why they kept him one more year. The jury is not completely out yet and the political ramifications were huge. Sorry if one of my best friends happens to be one of the top donors to the program and I happened to KNOW that a lot I was reading on here was complete and total BS. Sorry I stated that Bohn was retaining Hawkins before Bohn announced it. Geez. Get over it and act professional rather than like an indictive guy who believes you own the only voice on these boards. Or is this now called All-Boulder-Buffs?

I called out the rumor mill. All this nonsense about Bohn talking to Shanahan and other BS. The reality is that it's a bunch of rumors. I have no idea if there will be 10 transfers or zero next week. Unfortunately, the donors don't get that info. What I do know is that the players are pretty strong FOR Hawkins and AGAINST us rumor mongerers. That's a fact. The BS some of the posters FABRICATE is harming the program. Outside recruits get this stuff one way or the other.

Too bad I called out some people as Liars and BS artists. I care more for the program than that! I got all the neg reps and hate mail to prove it. Yippee. Go Buffs.

I was mostly giving you crap because you have an attitude that only your inside scoop is correct. There are several other posters on this site that have given correct info before it was public. To call them all out as liars and BS artists ignores past reliability. And don't look now, but Kyle Ringo even says the whole story smells. Is it possible Kyle Ringo might have some decent sources inside the AD?

In summation, if you want people like me to act more "professional", perhaps you should set an example.

Two years ago we had the 15th rated recruiting class. Since then we have won 8 games. What makes you think we will win games with bad recruiting classes?

As for the bolded part, it is a fact that the players don't like rumor mongers, but I'm willing to be there are no more than 20 players on the team that are fully behind Hawkins. And I mean, really behind him, not just behind him because he is still their coach and they must show respect. Less than 20, probably closer to 10. (based on what I've heard from a collection of players).

Yeah ask Darrell Scott and the other transfers over the past four years what they think about Hawkins.

I didn't call everyone out, I called out those who knew they were LIARS. Everyone gets a voice and just because most want Hawkins gone, doesn't make them liars. There's a difference between posting your opinion and posting something as a fact, that is far from it. That kind of crap kills programs. Hawkins doesn't need any help in that regard imo.

Did you talk to them? How many of them were likely to see playing time?

Celestine, Josh Smith and Darrell Scott are the only two I've seen that had already seen playing time and were penciled in as immediate contributors. I may be missing someone.

Celestine came back. Josh and Darrell are related to each other and that's hardly an indictment. If more guys leave this break, I'm with you.

If guys who are frustrated by not getting playing time decide to leave, then that's what happens. Guys like Goree have to look at their situation and decide if they can beat out Bonsu, Pericek and Cunningham for playing time. Just an example.

Just because a player stays on the team doesn't mean he fully supports Hawkins. It isn't just the ones who transfer who don't like what is going on. And yes, I've talked to many players on the team who don't like him and who have told me that it would not be a sad day for most of the team if he were fired.
