Are you guys happy??????

That's a sure sign a program is headed in the wrong direction when your state's best players go out of state.

"When the team is losing and you're kind of disappointed, it was so quiet," Spond said last week. "The stands were so quiet. It was a whole different feeling from the first game (hosting CSU) to the last."

But our fan base has nothing to do with it right. Big time players don't come to CU because we don't have big time fans.

Sure, blame the fans. Go the easy route.

It's all Hack's f-in fault. If he would've just won more games instead of talking so much SSHHHIIT!! We wouldnt be in this fine mess.

Gawd, what an asshat that POS wanna be is, huge mistake to hire him. But I guess that will be Bohnhead's undoing as well.

oh BTW, post #3000 mutha fuka!!!:dance:

15 f'in thousand fans in Folsom wearing RED!!!!! I guess that was the players and coaches fault.

Big time programs don't have fans tuck tail and run when things get tough. CU will always be a little fish in a big pond as long as our fan base to tuck tail and run when things get a little tough.

I could careless if you like the Coach, AD, or University Pres. Doesn't matter. CU fans are the only fans I know of that want to think our program can run with the big boys, yet we stay home on Sat. with our tails tucked between our legs when things get a little tough.

Again 15K kNU fans in Folsom for "rival game". Doesn't happen at big time programs.

Fans being committed and recruits being committed have the same root cause = either a successful program, or one on the path to success.

Neither of which is evident right now.

Laying blame on the symptoms fails to recognize the illness.

In general, though, I agree that support for the program should be just that, support for the program, not the coach.

Chilly, were you at the NU game?

the only way to fix all this is on the field. no marketing, no big talk about 10 ten wins, just wins. sadly, no real reason to believe that will happen....minus the minor hope that the maturation of our depth chart starts to pay big dividends and overcomes what has been thus far sub-par "coaching-up".

I disagree. I was actually surprised on the turnout this year. The only 2 bad games were the Mizzou game and the Huskers. And the Mizzou game was pretty full at the beginning.
I also talked to some husker fans around my seats. A few of them purchased season tickets just to be sure they could get in the husker game and not pay a premium price.

I also disagree that big time programs don't go through these things. Losing will do this to almost any program. Texas in the 90's USC in the 80's and 90's. Lots of teams go through this. Winning will change things.

Blaming the fans is stupid.

I think you can also attribute some of this to the transplant nature of Colorado's population now-a-days. Sure these guys attend Colorado schools for HS and what not, but their parents are alma maters of other universities and I'm sure the kids are fans of those places before CU.

Examples - Kasey Studdard, Kyle Shanahan, LaMarr Houston, Cory Ross, Austin Hinder has family ties to Cal, and although we did eventually land Kasa didn't he have family ties to Florida? I also think there was a kid a few years back in the Barnett era that we had no chance at b/c his parents were Notre Dame alums.

I'm definitely not saying this is a major cause, but it has to play into the kids thinking the way they do somewhat.

If my kids somehow get blessed with a bajillion times more athletic ability than I ever possessed (I did have some so it's not like we're multiplying by zero here ) I can guarantee that CU would get a first and dominant look over any other university.

They practically committed when I had them there for the CU-Nub game this year!

(Although they did say they hoped a certain someone wouldn't be the coach...)

YES. It was. It was their fault that we had nothing to cheer for. It was their fault that they SUCKED ALL YEAR LONG. That's what happens when you suck - your fans become apathetic. It's a cause and effect thing. When you suck, don't expect your fans to continue to be passionate.

I absolutely, positively guarantee you that had CU been 9-2 going into that game that there would not have been half that number of fusker fans in attendance.

Yes I was

Cool, just making sure your money was where your mouth was.

If you can't see that winning cures all then that's on you. This program is in the ****ter because the Buffs are one of the absolute worst BCS teams in the country, which has all happened on Hawkins watch.

Sure every team goes through hot and cold streaks. But the Texas and USC's fans still fill their own stadium when their biggest rival comes to town. CU fans stay home.

Stop blaming the fans...they are not the only one's to blame and frankly have been reasonably supportive by CU standards through the past four "less than respectable" seasons.

The fanbase had every bit of hope kicked out of the them the day before this game so that is why everyone was deflated. As the stupid ST plays happened it was very much a "great - guess we get to look forward to this crap again next year" type of sentiment in the stands.

As for the the huge number of KNU fans - not very atypical. The stadium has always been littered by those asshats every time we play them. Do you remember how many of them there were for the '89 game when it was for all the marbles - not much different. Just appeared worse because there were a lot of Buff fans who chose to do other things that day vs. come watch another signature Hawk "ah geez we're close" kind of game.

While I don't like it at all, fans chose to react in whatever way they felt that day as they are still choosing to do today. A large majority of the fanbases would act similarly after getting absolutely kicked in the nuts the day before. Just hard to tell since very few fanbases have to withstand this type of kick to the nuts.

FWIW...I held up my end of the bargain by getting the kNU fans in my section to STFU. :smile2:

3-8 record and being one of the worst BCS conference teams had nothing to do with that at all.

Out of curiosity Chilly, how many games did you attend this season?

Again 15K kNU fans in Folsom for "rival game". Doesn't happen at big time programs.

Neither does the return of a coach coming off a 3-9 season who has won about 1/3 of his games....

Neither does the coach telling a part of his fan base that they aren't real fans, haven't taken any risks, blah blah blah.

Neither does the move of a freshman all-American OL to fullback, followed rapidly by his transfer out...

Neither does a blowout loss to a mid-level MAC team

Neither does a loss to an inferior in-state opponent

Neither does 3 consecutive blowout losses to an opponent like Mizzou

Getting the picture here?? But I suppose those things are all the fault of the fans....

No they didn't. Back in the mid 90's, when both UT and OU sucked to high heaven, you could buy a walk-up ticket to the Red River Shootout.

Sucking makes people apathetic. Nobody wants to be associated with a loser. Right now, CU is a loser. It hurts to say that, but the truth hurts sometimes. We will continue to be a loser until Hawkins is gone. There are no guarantees that we'll be better with the next guy, but I can guarantee you that we'll continue to suck while he's still here. Recruits know that. Fans know that. Everybody knows that.

You are also dealing with a Colorado transplant problem. Go to a Nuggets/Lakers game or a Cubs/Rockies. Or even Steelers/Broncos game. They all look like the Colorado team is the visitor.

I would actually say it makes more sense that the Huskers filling up our stadium makes more sense than any of those.

Nobody wants to live in their crappy state so they come to Colorado. The problem is that they don't leave their team behind. Well they don't if the team is doing well.

Got this from my motivational speaker (as the blame for all the misery is somehow the fault of the fans), anyways 10 Steps to be happy...

Step One: Describe the parts of your support for the program that you are NOT happy with

Step Two: What can you change now?

Step Three: What type of BCS program could you follow for a lifetime?

Step Four: Envision your perfect Colorado football victory

Step Five: What are the next steps to take now to make you a better fan of the program?

Step Six: Give yourself some advice on what you're doing wrong (i.e. message boards, blue t-shirts at games, and calling coach an idiot from the stands)

Step Seven: Make a money plan, so that you can increase your donations to the CU program

Step Eight: Tell your loved ones what you are doing to become a better fan of the program

Step Nine: Celebrate mediocrity

Step Ten: Keep the momentum — keep getting after it

Which all just goes to prove my point. CU fans only turn up when the program is winning. When the program goes through some tough time, CU fans stay home. I can promise you that when LSU was crappy back in the 80's and 90's you still didn't see 15,000 fans from a rival SEC school show up in that stadium. As bad as those years were, and it was a long stretch of bad football, especially in the 90's. They still averaged 70K a game in attendance.

CU fans would rather tell you how we have better things to do with their time and money on Sat. Fans of the big boys tell you what time to show up for next weeks tailgate.

Showing up on Saturdays to cheer on you favorite football team, win or lose, does mean you are apathetic. It means that, no matter what is going on, there is nothing better than showing up to root for you favorite football team and enjoy festivities that go along with a College Football. I don't care what our record is, there will never be any better way I can think of to spend my Sat then either watching or attending a CU football game.

They think CSU's sucks as well. I really don't think it is that big of a deal. Colorado High School football is not going to float any program.

While I agree that only getting CO players is not a recipe for making a top-10 program, I do think we have solid HS players in the state. Spond, Jones, Bonnell, Coulter, Bell, Onyeali (sp??...), Slavin, and a few others would be very welcome additions to a top program. Next year's crop projects to be even better. Sure, we need to get top players from other states to build our program, but that does not mean we can ignore CO's kids. We need to get the best players in the state, because we're the state's flagship university. In spite of the high normal of CO transplants, there are still a lot of native CO people around with a lot of CO pride. Getting the top players helps us live up to the notion that we're CO's school. We need to raise local support, and this is one way of doing so.

I wish Spond the best, but I want him at CU. I wish he'd realize that Patterson will leave TCU, Kelly is the Calipari of football and get into controversy at ND, and Harbaugh will leave Stanford. I wish he'd realize that either Hawk succeeds, or he's let go and we get a new staff, under which he'd help rebuild his hometown's football program. Cunningham and Miller are hopefully telling him so. Same thinking goes for Jones, Coulter, and Bell. I really want those four.

I do think we can end up with Jones, but Spond's comments seem to indicate he's gone. That sucks...I hope we win big in the next four years and make him regret his decision...best of luck to him wherever he ends up though.

Get a ****ing clue and understand that any stadium in the country is going to be empty at the end of a 4th consecutive losing season, guy. ANY stadium in the country.

Well, I guess it's time to load up and double the number of season tickets you have, double your donation and really get behind the program. Lead by example man and then you can be even higher up on that horse of yours.

At LSU, the fans there knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the administration was going to do everything it could to put a winner on the field. We don't have that here. Therein lies the difference.

Yes, there are places, notably in the SEC, where they can go through down times and still fill their stadium. That comes from decades of program building. We haven't done jack squat to build this program.
