A land where CU and Utah went to the Pac10, er 12 and the current bowl system was eliminated. A land where all conferences had 12 teams and every team was part of a conference. A land where after all 12 regular season games were played, the top 16 ranked teams battled it out in a 4 week playoff to decide the true national champion. Of course there were still about 20 other bowl games going on around the country for the 17th and lower ranked teams, but the people finally had a champion and the second half of December and the first half of January was one hell of a college football month!!

Play the first two weeks of the playoffs at the higher ranked team's home field so that every regular season game still is vitally important and still a must win.

Play the final two weeks of the playoffs at the current BCS sites.

You talkin playoffs?!?!?!

And I will still and always say, the winner of a 16 team (or 8 or 32 or whatever you want to put it at) playoff is not the best team of that year, it is the hottest team at the end with a lucky draw in the brackets.

The NCAA BB tourney, as fun as it is, proves this year after year. The NFL playoffs, as fun as they are, prove this year after year.

As imperfect as it is, the top level of NCAA football provides a season where every game, every week, matters. None of this early losses don't matter because we will still win out conference garbage. None of this lose late but our conference is strong and we will get another shot as an at-large entry junk.

It is a lot of fun to speculate about a playoff but for the sake of what is a great game that is fun the whole season, leave it alone.

Have a playoff, put the SOS back into the rankings formula and make teams play meaningful games at the beginning of the season. No more loading up on SDSU (S. Dakota State), Alabama TBC (Technical Barber College), and New Mexico College of the Blind.

Not going to happen, and if it did you still have the 12th seed with two losses getting hot at the end against a team that won all season and has a bad day or a key injury and the #12 becomes the so-called champion.
If Arizona had won the superbowl last year could you have legitimately said they were the best team in the NFL in 2008? Not a chance, they would have won the trophy on luck and getting hot at the right time. I don't want to see college football go down the same path. Everyone gets a second (or third, or eventualy we make a 32 or 64 team playoff, or conference playoffs, etc.) chance. Why bother with a regular season. As it stands right now every week is interesting, every week counts, games in September matter, Ohio State losing to USC meant something. Playoff and Ohio State would be right back in it.

Again it is a lot of fun to talk about a playoff but it would damage the last true championship in team sports in the US.

Yes, if Arizona would have won that game they would have been the best team in the NFL, that is how this championship game-thingy works. Who cares if a team gets hot and wins out, that is what makes sports interesting.

Do you think Tech was the better team than Texas last year? What about OU? Got beat by by Texas and still went to the MNC game. One example, and more of a Big XII issue, but still highlights some of the flaws in the current arrangement.

1. No Arizona wouldn't have been the best team for the year only the hottest at the end. If you are going to go by that why bother having a season, just make everything a big tournament (pro BB and Hockey almost do that and nobody pays much attention to them until tourney time.)

2. Every system has flaws but I find more and more serious flaws in basing a championship on who gets hot at the end. College FB is special because every game matters. In the case of OU and Texas (and Tech) last year it was based on the entire season, not based on who happened to win last throwing out what happened before. Again not perfect but much preferable to a bunch of whiney "give us another chance" playoff fans.

By the way if you think a playoff will solve all the problems you don't follow sports much. Even with 64 teams involved every year we hear endless whining and complaining from those who didn't get in. "We had two more wins," "We played better at the end," "We had more quality wins," etc. Now they are talking about adding another 16 or 32 teams to the brackets, again why bother with a season.

In FB no matter how big the bracket is you will hear endless complaining from the team that sees itself as the next one left out, after all once in the playoff anything can happen, right. The mid-major conferences will complain that they had a team with only one loss that got left out while a bigger conference got in a team with 2-3 losses. A team with 3 losses will complain that some other 3 loss team got in instead of them.

To each their own, I much prefer the game the way it is. Don't try to fix something when the repair is more flawed than what you already have. . .

You can say that about all sports at any level, should we just toss out playoffs because the "hot" team always wins?

This is completely wrong.

When was the last time anyone argued that the Superbowl winner "got lucky" or "wasn't the best team"? When the Giants beat the undefeated Patriots in the Superbowl, was anyone saying it was a fluke and they didn't deserve to win?? The same Giants team lost to the Pats in week 17, but no one says the Patriots were the true champs that year.

And when was the last time a mens bball champ was debated?

Yet seemingly every year there is controversy over who deserves to be in the title game. Part of being a champion is endurance, and being "hot at the end of the season" could be confused for being the strongest after a grueling season.

In pro basketball and pro hockey, the regular seasons are less popular because the season is so long and half the teams make the playoffs.

There are 120 +/- teams in FBS and only 8-16 would be in a playoff so the regular season would certainly still matter. A higher percentage of NFL teams make the playoffs every year, but nobody argues the NFL regular season is worthless.

I would prefer to hear a few teams bitch becasue they didn't get in than to hear a bunch bitch becase they should have been in the championship game. With a playoff, no one will dispute who the champ is.

So in your mind the 2001 Huskers were better than the Buffs?

You are confusing Champs with the best team. Yes the Giants got lucky and no way in h*** were they the best team. I love college football because every game matters. In the NFL teams can go out and have 3-4 (or more) really lousy games and still end up in the super bowl. College BB is worse. Quick without checking tell me which top 20 teams played each other the week of Dec 6-12 and who won. Without looking you can't because quite frankly the games are meaningless. With 64 teams in the tourney all of the top 20 teams are going anyways, with pretty good seeds. Get knocked out of the top 20, no problem the next 20 go as well. Fill up the bracket with canon fodder from the conferences that are D1 in name only and you have the tourney. Listen to the 6-8 teams that thought they should get in that didn't complain like crazy and a bunch of others complain about their placement on the brackets. Meanwhile a team that worked hard and won all season gets a bad draw in an injured player and well, "better luck next year." Fun to watch but as to picking the best team for that year, a bunch of crap.

College football is healthy, attendance is up or even, even during an economic down cycle. TV ratings are up (for the whole year, not just at the end unlike BB.) The TV ratings for the bowls are solid and as new TV contracts come up the money gets bigger.

The stupidest thing that they could do is throw it all out so that they can be just like every other sport and give the whining bitches who lost already another chance in a playoff, rendering the season unimportant.

Now I could be convinced that a plus one format makes sense. Take the top two teams after the BCS bowls have been played and put them together. But once you get to #5 and beyond, sorry they had their chance in the season and didn't do it. No juicebox, no little trophy, this isn't little league and it isn't draw it out forever pro sports. It is the most unique, interesting season in sports and it matters. That is why people watch it.

I disagree. The preseason polls can determine alot more than a teams performance on the field.

I'm confused. Giants beat the best team when it mattered. So the Pats should have just been given the trophy because they finished the season undefeated? BOOOO. Who wants that? Guess you are happy watching the Beef O' Brady bowl every year. IMO the BCS determines nothing, and the way CFB is heading is toward exclusivity, not inclusion. I would love to see the Utahs and the Boises be given a chance to upset the big boys once in a while. As it stands right now, their is little possibility of seeing anyone outside of a handful of elite teams ever even sniff a MNC. College football is dictated now more than ever by greed and money. It has nothing to do with competition. That is why we will never have a playoff.

So in your mind the 2001 Huskers were better than the Buffs?

2001 Huskers got toasted in the bowl. People knew when it was over that the Buffs were better.

In BB since 1979 when they started seeding teams only six times has the #1 seed won the tourney, and you tell me its not luck?

In two years none of the #1 seeds made the final four. Again the regular season is turned into a joke.

In 1985 Villanova won the NC as an 8 seed, this means that they were no better than the #28 team based on regular season, another sick joke. Great story but no way in the world were they the best team that season, only the hottest and luckiest at the end.

There have been a number of NC teams with at least 6 losses, winning in years that other teams in major conferences had 2 or less losses. Again don't try to tell me these were the best team that year.

The current system has its faults, no question. At the same time no amount of fantasizing about a playoff will convince me that an 8,12,16 or more team playoff is better and more interesting that what we have now.

You can't compare a football playoff to basketball. Bball has a 30+ game season whereas footbal has 12, every game does matter especially if only 16 teams in all FBS make a playoff.

What do you tell TCU, Boise, or Cincinnati this year?? Sorry, you went undefeated but you are not the best team in the country because the computers say so. What should they have done to prove themselves?? Not their fault their conferences stink, just like it wasn't the Cardinals fault that they made the playoffs last year in part because the NFC west was garbage.

OK, so you clearly prefer a paper champion. That is fine, not everyone likes to know the truth since making stuff up and being told who is the champion is fine for some people I guess.

Under my scenario the regular season has even more meaning than how it currently goes. This way if a school loses one game, there is virtually no chance that they could get a home game at the end of the year, lose two and you are most likely out unless you are playing a reallly tough schedule and a are a traditional power. In today's format a smaller school has basically no impact on the final result but with my format every school can impact it.

As for the best team that year not winning, we must have a different opinion of what the word best means then. A team with lots of preseason hype that fades toward the end is not the best team that year. A team that goes 1-1-1 like CU in 90' can finish strong (hot) and be the best team that year.

And I will still and always say, the winner of a 16 team (or 8 or 32 or whatever you want to put it at) playoff is not the best team of that year, it is the hottest team at the end with a lucky draw in the brackets.

That is the problem with every other playoff idea. 16 teams is where it needs to be, not more, not less. 8 is not enough as you can easily have a #10 ranked team get snubbed that deserved to be there as much as a #4 ranked team. More than 16 and it starts affecting the regular season where your argument would then hold water. 16 keeps it fair to all, and keeps every regular season game AT LEAST as important as it is now. You can't tell me that a #1 ranked team would pull a Colts, and risk losing a game that could very well drop them out of their seeding and home playoff game they have lined up next week.

That is because they have a bull**** way of picking the teams. It should be done by a system like the BCS rankings that we use right now. Top 16 get in for football and top 64 get in for basketball. No more of this emerging from a board room with a list made up by 60 year old white dudes that can't make a free throw of who gets in. Gotta use the rankings that factor in, wins/losses, Strength of schedule, margin of victory, etc.

2. Every system has flaws but I find more and more serious flaws in basing a championship on who gets hot at the end. College FB is special because every game matters. I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree on this issue. You want a system that says that if a team like Utah rolls up a great record beating Weber State, Utah State, Hawaii, SDSU, UNLV, CSU, UNM, etc. along with three fairly legit wins then they should get a shot at teams who have beaten 7-8 teams better than any on the Utah schedule. They get hot for 2-3 games and bang, they are the best team that year.

I call B***S*** to that David vs. Goliath fantasy.

No way in the world that #16 deserves a shot at the trophy, or #8, or even #6. It is called a football season, not a tournament pre-season.

You and those who agree with you can continue to dream but what we have is working to well as indicated by the financial results to change. Some politicians may try to may a bunch of noise but in the end the money votes and the paying public has voted that they like it just the way it is.

I will give you credit for consistency in your arguements and for taking the time to think out your alternative, respectfully I just disagree 100%.

I think it could be reasonably argued that USC is the best team in college football every year. The talent they have there is far beyond even what Texas and Florida have. But it hasn't done them any good. However, if there were a playoff, it's entirely possible that they'd have 3-4 more national titles than they already have. What a tournament would do is level the playing field. No more BS with strength of schedule or conference affiliation. You could have the best team in the country lose a game and still win the whole thing. Whereas now, if Ohio State goes undefeated, they're guaranteed a spot in the MNC game even though at best they're probably no better than the #6 or #7 team in the country.
