Sorry DBT, but I am completely negative about Buff Football

There is no good news anywhere to be found....

  • We have dropped from a Top 10 team in the 90s to 99th last year
  • Top players have transferred out of the program
  • Our current recruiting class is ranked 65th.
  • We are no longer included in any discussion of college football elite programs.
  • We are predicted to finish last in the Big 12 North next year.
  • We have a horrible administration that does not value our football program
  • We have a coach who has been a complete failure.
  • Our primary competition is improving, and we are failing.
  • Finally, we have everything riding on next year's success. Otherwise, look for (perhaps) an insurmountable hole to dig out of.
If any of you guys can spin this any differently, let me know.

The offense should be better next year. OL grows up, Hansen improves, Clemons catches on..

I think we can surprise next year and will stick by my prediction we will have a winning record.

Is the program going anywhere though? Not really.. Eventually recruiting classes like this year catch up to you.. A good season next year might buy some time for Talkins.

One would hope that a good season would not only buy time for Hawkins but give him the ability to recruit again. It's gotta be tough right about now.

Good recruiters can recruit regardless of record. Ed O put up great recruiting classes at Ole Miss and had bad years record wise.

Talkins doesn't have good enough recruiters on his staff..

My low point was 2004/2005 when people were accusing CU of being a bunch of Sex Criminals. Boulder was Rascist according to the recruiters from the other side.

Fixing CU's reputation was the hard part and it was ALWAYS going to be painful. Fixing the AD's relationship with the University (admissions, etc) was also a big task. We are there. If we win in 2010, I think we are on the upswing and things will get better. Lose in 2010, and we will clean house. The next coach will be in a great position to win and recruit. I don't think it's nearly the hole to dig out of that it was around 2005... (please don't tell me we were B12 north champions - we sucked then and were about to get much worst).

I never expected CU was going to be able to bring in Nick Saban and suddenly become the top recruiting force in the west.

It's a process and 2009 was a serious detour at best. It will get better, the only question is will it get worst before it gets better or does it just get better from here.

I am not convinced Hawkins would be fired if he were to go 0-12 next year and 0-13 the year after.

Holy ****. You're completely negative? I would have never guessed.

It's not all bad news:

CU is on nationally televised games as much as any team outside the top 20;
The program is perceived as clean;
CU plays as tough a non-conference schedule as anybody, and gets respect for doing so;
The Buffs return a boat load of starters for '10;
The Buffs have two quarterbacks with lots of experience and a bunch of quality receivers;
Folsum is as good a place to watch a game as there is, even if the team isn't very good;
The girls in Boulder are infinitely hotter than the girls at NU; and
Notwithstanding a couple of bad seasons, Hawkins isn't nearly as a bad a coach or guy as the haters make him out to be. (CU was extremely competitive last year in the Texas, OSU, WVU and Nebraska games. Truth is, with better special teams play, they probably win three of those games. I'm not claiming moral victories; just saying that the team Hawk fielded didn't stink.)

8 or 9 wins next season and the program will begin to soar.

Feel the sunshine......feels so good.....

WTF! 8 or 9 wins with next years schedule? I want what your smoking!:canabis:

From a W/L perspective, one would have to try awfully hard for it to get worse...I mean you can't lose more than all the games can you? Or to put it in Hawkese, "We're just three losses from 0-12, we really are".

Special teams will not improve under the Riddler and Hawk will never divorce him.

People say this stuff like it's a fact. This kind of "play on the field" frustrates me as much as anyone. But reason it out and look at the complete body of work and you will find that Riddle knew how to run special teams at Boise State (5 years in a row they were very good) and now he forgot how? I just can't believe that's the case. History tells me it's unlikely that "special teams will not improve under the Riddler"...

BTW, punters and kickers are NEVER coached by the staff. If the punter stinks, it's due to recruiting and/or the fact that his "personal punting coach" and the punter are somehow not getting it right. Kickers and Golfers are the same. No chance that the Golf coach at CU talks to the players about their techniques. Riddle gets to decide who punts, but if DiLallo loses the touch there's not much Riddle can say or do. And by NCAA law, CU can't pay for a private coach to come in and fix it. Also note this is one reason the local kicker has given for wanting to go to UCLA - his private kicking coach lives there.

In the WVU game CU was handed multiple first half turnovers and that was the only reason the game was as close as it was. Not a single player on WVU was worried about CU pulling the upset. Most of the players were laughing on the sideline prior to halftime. The game turned around at the half when the WVU coach ripped the entire team. Something Hawkins has never done.

The UT game UT had a few turnovers deep in their own end allowing CU to get free points.

OSU was missing the starting QB. If their starting QB is not hurt, that game is not close.

The NU game CU played well, but I'm still waiting for an explaination on why the coaches thought that running the ball every other play at the best D player in the nation was a sound coaching decision.

Finally for the few games that CU was competative in, there were more that they failed to even show up for. This team could have easily been 1-11 in 2009 and is much closer to going 1-11 than they are going 11-1 in 2010.

Look. This all comes down to expectations. For most of the 1990s, we expected to be a Top 20 team. Today, those expectations are in the **** can. We have lowered our standards to hoping for a winning season and the chance to play in the Outhouse Bowl.

You are probably close to correct by using the word NEVER. I suspect there may be a few coaching staff members somewhere who have enough knowledge to help coach kickers and punters. It doesn't appear from the outside that anyone on Colorado's current staff has the ability to coach any aspect of punting and kicking. I know for a fact that Dal Ward coached punters and kickers. It seems to have become a lost art among typical college football coaches.

And just to be a friendly thorn in your side, how do you know the golf coach at CU doesn't talk to the players about technique? Did he tell you this?
:)

Hey I know we can spend all off season pointing the finger here and there for the blame....but it comes to this being a team sport, with the players and the coaches all to blame. After the 2009 season, this team should/better come out for the 2010 season with a chip on its shoulder and be shameful the way they had played last yr. And prove to them self that they can compete at this level. I think for some reason (and I dont know why) that the 2010 season will be something special......but as long as who they have in B&G I will support them, be players and coaches....GO BUFFS!!!!!

I have D-1 golfers in the family and thus know that college golfers have their own swing coaches (typically for many years) and thus the college coach focuses on mental aspects, drills, etc. If a kid doesn't want to work with their own private coach for whatever reason, some D1 coaches are qualified to help in that area. Many are not swing gurus (even though they may have been great players). Brent Franklin, the CU women's assistant coach is a top swing coach in Denver (and one of the top golfers to ever come out of Canada), but he stays out of the way on this issue for most of the girls.

Punting/Kicking is the same way. ARe there exceptions? I'm sure there are. My buddy punted at UofA and had his film reviewed weekly by his Punting Coach in Phoenix....

Our punting/kicking has a lot to be desired, but I don't expect Riddle to fix their techniques. He needs to get better punters/kickers. DiLallo was a horrible waste of a 4-year scholarship in hindsight. CU is a Punting/Kicking mecca thanks to mile-high altitude and our legacy of All-Americans. To have DiLallo be one of the worst in the country was just awful.

That's the kicker (pun intended) on DiLallo. If I remember right he was ranked near the very top of HS kickers, the year we recruited him from Florida. Bummer that he never met those expectations.

So, for whatever reason, DBT has become the figurhead of the "CU will be better next year" crowd. I don't know whetherr to laugh or cry. Believe me when I say that I am torn on how next year will play out. I argue with myself all the time on the issue. Like, "Hansen showed a lot of improvement and looks like he is ready to step up" vs. "Hansen relys too much on running around and still makes some questionable decisions." Or, "Our O line has been really young and is ready to mature" vs "We were manhandled by the likes of CSU." Believe me, I am torn. But when push comes to shove, I prefer to take the more positive viewpoint. So, instead of focusing on the negatives, like Dallas did in starting this thread, I try to look at the positives. Such as:

The O line is loaded with kids that were highly regarded coming out of high school. This year, for the first time since they've been here, they will have the same O line coach. At the end of the year, they appeared to have gelled. Against 'braska, they handled Suh and the 'braska D line better than any team all year. Maybe, just maybe, they finally were getting it.

Our WRs last year were pedestrian. Simmons never really got the play book. With a year under his belt, Simmons will be exponentially better. The WR corps of Simmons, Simas, who really popped at the end of the year, McKnight, Clemmons, Ussery, and, possibly, Celestine may be one of the top two or three receiving groups in the Big XII next year

Hansen has all the tools to be, not good, but great, especially with the confidence he gained toward the end, next year. And as much as most of you hate Cody, he came in against Okie St. and looked really good, he will be a geat back up next year. We are going to be stronger at QB than we've been in years. Add to that the continuity on the O line, our passing game is going to be great next year.

The RB position is a big question, but Stewart is top notch. Losing Sumler, to me, will be addition by subtraction. I think he was way over used last year. With him gone, Stewart, Lockridge, who has tons of potential, and we may have gotten a steel with Tony Jones, all in all, I think our offense can be one of the tops in the conference next year. I also think Deehan and Thornton could be special. Deehan, remember, was a four star recruit and word is that Thornton is a monster.

Our D line last year was horrible at the beginning of the year, but by the end of the end, were really developing. They were really young. I think our DLine will be very strong.

Our LB's will also be a strength and I hear that Derrick Webb is a real bad ass. So, with Webb, Major, Sipili, Rippey, and Beatty, we will be strong up front.

Our DB's should also be solid with Smith, Brown, Mahnke and Polk. And don't forget Orms. The kid is a winner and was really turning heads in practice as well. Depth is a problem though, for sure.

Kicking is a big question, but I've heard from folks close to the team that Grossnickle can punt the hell out of the ball. Place kicking is a big question mark, but I'm still not giving up on Goodman. He does have a great leg if he can get his head together.

The intangible thing that I like is that I am pretty sure the team, as a whole, believes in themselves and they believe in and are strongly behind the coaching staff. I can't help but to believe that Hawkins has a lot more ability than most of you are giving him credit for. He is up to his last chance and he knows it. If he doesn't get it done, given all that I've argued about with the players he has coming back, then there will be a change. And the guy I'd really like to see us go after, if we have to, is Calhoun.

One other huge negative that I failed to mention....why in the hell do we not have powerful boosters like every other large program? The boosters should have been able to dictate change, just like we have seen at countless other universities.

That one has always baffled me as well. Where are the really big time boosters of Colorado athletics? It seems like there are none.

I can't believe people remain behind Riddle. The 2009 special teams was one of the worst football units I have ever seen. Riddle being retained is probably the one thing that bothers me the most about this offseason.

Whats the over/under on how many losses it will take before Hawk loses the locker room?

Just sayin' that we have to get off to a good start or this season could be over quickly.

Other than losing Brown, I agree. Lost one of the best coaches, kept one of the worst. That should help the team improve, right?

We had lapses on Special Teams and on Defense that cost us. We looked horribly coached for most of the year. But I'm still optimistic!

But I really believe the O-Line needs to really step up. We figured out how to pass block by year end, but we still had no push on the ground. We failed to have much consistency at Center or Left Guard. We have no clue what the deal was with Givens, but he's got to figure that out. His penalties cost us big time. Add the JC guy and MTM to the mix, maybe Iltis will be more healthy? Maybe some other young guys like Jack Harris push the starters. We got a lot of guys there now so there will definitely be some competition. If we find 5 guys we can go with all year, these guys should be awesome.

Experience will help everywhere, including the O-Coordinator. If our offense isn't the best it's been since 2001 there is no excuse. More talent and experience than we've had since then imo. Eliminate the penalties and countless mistakes, and benefit from an extra year in the system with the same coaches and the associated maturity and that's huge in college football.
