I never thought I'd be praying for Solich to step in and save CU football...

This would be an awesome thing if it came to pass. And if they know what the **** they're talking about if they get the "access" Woody says they want. As great as the $$$ would be, that sets up the possibility for the whole thing to blow up in CU's face. :huh:

90% of me is doing a boogey dance thinking about the $$$, but the other little bit is thinking this.

And since when in the hell does Woody break news?

This sounds good... I knew people with money would step up after all these embarrassments of the past few years... Oh, and hey Bonehead, shut up and don't blow this..




Finally good news for a change.. I need to pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming.
 
This would be very good news. I actually do not worry that much about their "influence". As the article correctly points out, it is a much better set-up than the T. Boone Pickens model. When you have 50 people as part of the group, the actions taken by that group are likely to be much more measured.

If it does come to pass, the first things that should happen is paying off the new basketball/volleyball practice facility in full and then building a permanent indoor practice facility for football. Those two moves would go a long way in getting the Buffs right back in the thick of the Big 12.
 
I think this is an awesome idea and one that could create more momentum going forward. One question that I would have is how much do those 50 boosters donate currently? Not that I'm trying to be "picky" just curious as to what the true net increase in donations this would be. For example if those guys currently donate a collective $5 million every year, will that continue or is the $1 million a one-time donation and their annual donations cease. Not that one or the other is better just will be curious to see how the details shake out.

I agree having 50 high-profile financially successful "board of director" types as our "sugar boosters" is much better than 1 or 2 hicks with money that want to play Athletic Director.

Also I would wonder how much of this was seeded by the Hawkins buyout plan and when that got squashed by Benson, they must have circled the wagons and came up with a better long-term plan.

Hope it works and CU gets in the staff to have the on-field success that this off-field momentum can really turn to an advantage.
 
Finally! Way to go Mr. Solich!

We do have boosters with money, and it's good to see them grow a pair.

Way to step up. Now let's get this thing turned around. Don't know why I am quite this excited maybe just any positive news about the program just gives me hope again.
 
I think one positive side effect of something like this happening would be smaller donations increasing as well. Sounds like this plan still has a ways to go, but you cannot understate how much this would help the program.
 
I don't think there is anything to this. If there were, I'd have been contacted by now.
 
I know CU has to compete with other schools, but this (Boone Pickens, Nike, etc. etc.) bugs me to no end. People are dying in Haiti and there a lots of people with needs. If you're going to donate millions, please do so for a cause other than college football.

I know other schools do it, but that doesn't make it right.
 
reading that article carefully, it appears to me that it is just an idea from a handful of big money boosters. it sounds like they are quite a ways off from getting 50 at 1mm per.

plus, the faculty is going to squeal like donkeys at this. they'll say, of course, that the $ should go to academics instead AND they are going to hate the idea of some type of "role" for the group in operations.

woody is right to bring up vickers. vickers lead the posse to run mallory out of town. vickers and his buds were the ones that forced the fairbanks hire. this experience, years ago, of "overly involved" boosters left a long mark on the program.

i do agree that a group of 50 in some formalized booster group is a better idea by far than a couple of dudes trying to pull the strings behind the scenes. and, hell, i'd give them some kind of a say in things, too. you put up 50mm, you get a seat at the table. this is no different, imho, than the CU Foundation having a voice in a lot of academic stuff, even though the faculty won't want to admit it.

GO BIG MONEY BOOSTERS!

this would get us back to relevance.
 
It is a legit effort but as the article says it is very early in the process. That's all I know and I know it because a relative has been contacted.

I also think it is a great idea

It wouldn't quite get us back to relevance, but it would help. They need a lot more than $50MM to do what they want to do. I don't think the academics would have nearly the coniption that is being implied. There's always "a better place" for money to go. I'm not going to tell some guy that wants to throw a cool Mill at the CU AD that he should send it somewhere else instead. It's his money, he can do what he wants with it. At the end of the day, anything that helps bring money into the school in any capacity is good for the school.

I hope it's true, and I hope it comes to fruition, and I hope it's just the beginning. CU needs about 10 times that figure to fully fund all the projects that is would like to do, i.e. varsity baseball, softball, wrestling, swimming, hockey, new fieldhouse, facilities, scholarship endowments, etc.
 
I would be more willing to make a smaller donation knowing that it is going into the $50M pot for improvements.
 
It's not a question of public money- it's a targeted donation, so the faculty really has no say. Not that that will shut them up, of course.
 
I don't understand the vitriol towards the faculty. I think they would be perfectly happy with something like this. Why should they have any problems with it? It might help free up some money for them, or at least lead to increased application revenues. Nothing about this is a bad thing.
 
Actually, what makes the faculty squeal like donkeys is when the University had to lend the Athletic Department $8 million in 2006 because of the Barney/Mary Keenan Deathmatch meltdown. So if the boosters want to pony up serious cash every year to the AD, the faculty (to the extent that they care much) will be thrilled. The idea that the faculty are a bunch of sports hating commies is crap. Those guys care about their research, and that's pretty much all they think about. A few Joanne Belnkaps make a lot of noise, but they aren't representative of the faculty as a whole.

And the part of the student body that doesn't like football will be even more thrilled. If the boosters are serious about ponying up this kind of cash, the students might be able to reduce or eliminate the athletic fee that students pay to the AD whether they care about sports or not. Believe me, grad students working on the dissertation are a lot more pissed about having to pay about a hundred bucks a semester to the AD then they are about sports-crazed boosters giving their own money to the AD.

If the AD paid back that loan early, that would save a lot of faculty jobs. They wouldn't mind that a bit.

I'm cautiously stoked about hearing this. This would help in many ways and would get the ball rolling. I'm sure the faculty will frown upon it but too bad. As BB stated, indoor facility and the basketball/volleyball would be a good start. It's way early but hopefully this happens in the near future!

On the facilities wise I agree with BB, get the basketball facility and the indoor practice facility up..
 
If Allbuffs posters pooled $10 per post, the Junta could sit on that board.
 
I'm kind of wondering why Woody wrote this. Was this kind of fed to him or did he catch wind of it and go with it on his own? I'm really sick of getting my hopes up over this program only to have them ripped away. I hope this is true and happens fast. But I fear it is just a few guys talking of which not much will come of it. A year from now, I fear, a thread will pop up something like "What ever happened to that $50 Million".

That is why I almost wish he hadn't written that article. It was way too early. It could even have, though I doubt it, the effect of cooling off some donations. "Hey, I don't need to make one this year, they are about to get $50 million!" I doubt that would happen though.
