When you can find more than one recruit being sold as either a "diamond in the rough" or a "late bloomer".

I fear people are going to let the results of this recruiting class slide. If anything, the heat on Dan Hawkins should intensify as a result of this recruiting class.

Only the apologists around here can actually say this recruiting class is actually Big 12 caliber.. This class would barely be middle of the pack in the MWC..

I'm sorry, you can't actually win Big 12 titles or Big 12 north titles when you can't even land a Top 10 player from the state of Colorado.. Its beyond embarrassing..

Just out of curiosity

BYU ranked 37th with 3 4* prospects including Jake Heaps a really good QB.
Utah ranked 42nd with 2 4* prospects including WR Kenneth Scott who they beat us out for
TCU ranked 43rd with 3 4* prospects not sure their star of the class, RB Josh Huff probably? I think we were after him.
CSU ranked 54th with 1 4* prospect the QB Pete Thomas is the star of their class.
CU ranked 55th with 0 4* prospects :sad1:
And wow, Maryland ranked 36th overall with 4 4* prospects, their coach is on a seat very similar in temperature to Hawk.

As for CU's actual recruiting class I have been very disappointed with how recruiting has gone this year. I was hoping Hawk would get us in the 30s or at least the 40s with being able to keep his job on top of not having to fire any of his assistant coaches. I don't think the class is going to hurt us that much, but I also have to wonder how much it's going to help us. I have my doubts about a lot of these guys being good enough to start in the Big 12 and a lot of them being able to get into school at all.

Hate to tell you....this is what several of us knew would happen with the retention of Hawkins before the NU game. There is no surprise here.

We don't have the front line guys in this class. I don't necessarily have a problem with anyone we have recruited, but they're all projects or question marks. I'm on board with that when it's the 2nd guy at a position. For instance, taking a Forrest West behind a Nick Kasa. West worked out, so we ended up hitting the jackpot. But odds are that you're not going to find 2 Wests at the same position in a single recruiting class. Way too much risk with this class and not enough likelihood for immediate help.

I hate to comment beyond that, because it's all on paper right now. Kind of like evaluating an NFL draft class immediately after draft weekend. You don't know for a couple/few years. But scouting service ratings do correlate to on-field success. The odds are stacked against this class being championship caliber (barring some pleasant 11th hour surprises).

We'll see.

I just crack up because Buffs fans are naturally trying to spin this class positively any way they can. Every kid that pops up out of nowhere with no offers is an instant stud that magically appeared only for Buffs coaches to find. Unfortunately, we really have just struck out on many of our top and secondary choices. We are recruiting on Plan D right now.

I am sure someone will rip this thread as too negative and will talk glowingly about how we have guys "who want to be Buffs," but the fact remains many of the guys in this class simply did not have many other options. Also, I am sure some will point to the abundance of 3* players in this class while ignoring the fact that there are many more players rated 3* with each passing year. We may even hear the standard "stars do not matter" retort if we are lucky.

I was willing to tone down my negativity for a while, but the state of this program is just ridiculous right now.

I thank all of you who keep CU football on the forefront. While I do check the news, I am becoming ambivalent which sucks more than anything else.

News like this does not help my attitude toward the future.

I really hate that.

Stars don't mean anything. These guys want to be Buffs. Hawk has shown he can find guys that the other schools pass on. These guys want to be Buffs. Stars don't mean squat. How many 5* players never pan out? Look at guys like Speedy! Sheesh, what a negative nancy you've turned into.

How many 5* players never pan out?

under hawkins? almost all.

i could get excited about a class of 3*'s if the coaching staff had a history of getting the most out of thier recruits. how many of the 4 and 5 star recruits have hawkins and company coached up to expectations or better?

what can one do? nsd will come and go. hawkins will die the slow death in 10 and then that will be that. we will rebuild. the program has survived great turmoil. it will survive hawkins. if guys want to come play here, i wish them well. i am not going to get caught up in comparing them to other programs because other programs are actually trying to win. we aren't. relax. it will pass. seriously. don't get your blood pressure up. just roll your defenses up and weather the next year and the sun will then rise again.

If I'm understanding you right, I think you're saying this thread is too negative? I have to agree. Personally, I'm stoked about the number of 3 star kids in this class. I think there are quite a few studs who seem to have magically appeared out of nowhere for our coaches to find...

Unfortunately, the only way I can actually say those things is by stealing from BB. Aside from that, I have to say nothing that's going on right now is changing the feeling I had all season about the direction this program is headed. I pray I'm wrong - it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong about how I thought a recruiting class was going to work out...

I will give some credit to the current coaching regime in the recruiting realm. They do not quit, have performed consistently and exceeded expectations. The fact that they have pulled as many 3 stars, are still meeting with Spond is amazing. The body of work they are selling is one bowl appearance, a 3 win season and a coach with little future. Hawk has won some big time recruiting battles but now we are losing to lesser programs. Much like Barnett at the end, we were losing players that we had no business being in the same breath with.

God bless these recruited kids! But reality wise is there going to get dog ****ted coached up. Yes my comments are negative to the program but if it was your kid? Who are we kidding?

Stars truely don't mean diddly. I have a player currently being recruited who was a NO STAR player, not his fault, we are a relatively new school and only have 2 players in D-1 ball currently. I've sent his film out across the country(via the innerwebs and good old DVDs) since last January and he's had some intrest but grades and test scores kept it luke warm at best. Well, a couple of 1-AAs got interested, then some non-BCSs then a BCS confrence school. He comitted to one of the non-BCS schools and now, low and behold, he is suddenly a 3-star player. I knew the kid was a D-1 player, shoot, we've known it since his sophomore spring, but it is amazing how the recruiting rankings suddenly see the light.

These guys want to wear BnG and all you can do is bitch because they don't have enough stars by their names. Why don't you go root for the sheep. Signing day is in a couple of days. Why don't you be thankful you don't live in Haiti and actually have the luxury of sitting high up on your perch and extolling everything that you think is wrong with our football program. After that you can go FYITA!

Welcome to all the new Buffs! You will all make a difference here on and off the field.

Were you drinking last night? As BB said more and more recruits are 3 stars. If you look at the players other offers its not a very impressive class.

The most troubling thing to me is the complete lack of other options by these players. Sure, CU has lots of 3 stars, but lots of them have no business being 3 stars. Check out TCUs, BYUs, etc. 3 stars - they all have impressive offers or committed early. CU's 3 stars are closer to 2 stars with no offers despite sending out film and being late in the game. I thought I read that Moschetti sent film out on Torres to tons of schools. THe only offer is CU? Yeah, Torres film looks great, great stats and great measurables, but so do millions of players who aren't even good enough for Div. 2.

The point is what offers a player has is hte best indication of how he "projects" and CU has lots of players with few offers.

A 5* and so on does not make the player, how many other schools have offered does not make the player.....these young men choose to come to CU and wear the B&G and all some people can do is bitch about the number of stars by their name or how many other schools have not offered them.

Stars are trend indicators, nothing more. There will always be 5* busts and 2* "diamonds in the rough". When I look at stars, I look at the class as a whole. A UT or SC class where very nearly every kid is a 4 or 5* is going to be a great class and that usually translates to superior results on the field. Having said that, there are still busts in UT and SC classes. The difference is there are other guys there to fill in the gaps.

When you are always bringing in 3* and lower, occasionally you'll get a kid, who for whatever reason, was passed on by the big boys and turns out to be a great player. Problem is, where those kids don't pan out, you have little or no better alternative. That is where CU is now. Those less recruited kids have to be the "diamond in the rough"...or get coached up. The first is a very hit or miss proposition and I have a hard time naming a kid who got substantially better under this staff's tutelege, excepting Cabral (many examples), and the now departed G. Brown (Jimmy Smith).

Best case scenario, keeping DH has set CU back 12 months from being competitive. Depending on this class, it may have set it back further.

The recruiting services really are not that accurate on any given player, as FlaBuff pointed out, but they represent a pretty good indicator of trends. If a school has consistently high recruiting classes, they usually are a top 20 type team.

To have expected a different result given the status of the coaching staff (not the program - it's the coaching staff's uncertain status) would by unrealistic.

I think enough of the no-namers from last year saved that from being a disaster (West, Olatoye, Orms), coupled with some higher rated guys. 1 year of ALL no-namers won't have a huge impact in the long run.

I appreciate you taking the high road.

This thread addresses new topics in refreshing ways. I, for one, am riveted by the speculation surrounding the value of the star system, and whether or not our recruiting class contains more than its fair share of diamonds in the rough.

And since the sarcasm font has yet to be invented, I'll come right out and say it. I'm being sarcastic. Except where Fla Buff is concerned, and I read his submission in earnest because he's a giant of a man.

And I know I don't have to read this stuff if I'm not interested, but God help me, I can't stop!

There is not much to debate, Wally.
Speedy was a 2-star.
Darrell was a 5-star.
Speedy is better than Darrell.
Accordingly, 2-stars are better than 5-stars.
End of conversation.

Hey dumbass, what does haiti have to do with football recruiting? Using your logic, go pick up a weapon and help out in iraq. Why don't you go root for san jose state, that's what cu is becoming. BB is right, look at the offers and how mnay 'diamond in the rough" hawk is recruiting. See,, some people care about the program and are tired of it being run by a guy who thinks his **** doesn't ever stink and is way over his head. Check the record and being out-recruited by csu is enough. They are getting texas kids and have 11 from florida. It's fans like you who bury your head in the sand like an ostrich and get bent over year after year and say give me more that are the problem. When hawk gets fired, pull your head out and give him a ride back to MT.EGO

Well said. Many of us have been trying to say the same message since last November, but nowhere near as eloquently as you.
