how does CU compare to the Pac 10 schools in football?

Remember when CU was #16 on the wins list? I believe it was less than a year ago. Sounds like our presence won't be gracing the top 25 that much longer.

it's funny in not that funny way, but i was in the CU bookstore the other day and Dan Hawkins is on the cover of the Colorado Vault Football book. i'd like to rethink that one.

They could have waited to publish that with a picture of our next winning coach on the cover.

Presently would only be able to out-recruit Wazzu for players who wanted to play in the conference and have BCS aspirations. 10 of 11 would be a small step up from where we currently are (12 of 12, unless you want to argue we're 11 of 12 here because we've got a better shot out of the North than Baylor does in the South).

Here's how CU's Athletic Department ranks in terms of revenue if we and Utah joined up to create the Pac-12:

Total
1. USC: $80.2 millin ($35.2 football / $3.8 men's basketball)
2. Stanford: $74.7 million ($13.5 football / $6.1 men's basketball)
3. California: $73.4 million ($27.7 football / $5.8 men's basketball)
4. UCLA: $66.2 million ($26.6 football / $11.7 men's basketball)
5. Washington: $60.6 million ($34.2 football / $9.3 men's basketball)
6. Oregon: $60.3 million ($24.8 football / $4.3 men's basketball)
7. Arizona State: $53.3 million ($29.9 football / $6.7 men's basketball)
8. Arizona: $51.8 million ($20.9 football / $17.5 men's basketball)
9. Oregon State: $50.2 million ($30.9 football / $4.3 men's basketball)
10. Colorado: $49.9 million ($27.8 football / $4.0 men's basketball)
11. Washington State: $38.3 million ($11.4 football / $3.7 men's basketball)
12. Utah: $31.8 million ($16.4 football / $6.0 men's basketball)

Football / Men's Basketball Only
1. Washington: $44.1 million ($34.2 football / $9.3 men's basketball)
2. USC: $39.0 millin ($35.2 football / $3.8 men's basketball)
3. Arizona: $38.4 million ($20.9 football / $17.5 men's basketball)
4. UCLA: $38.3 million ($26.6 football / $11.7 men's basketball)
5. Arizona State: $36.6 million ($29.9 football / $6.7 men's basketball)
6. Oregon State: $35.2 million ($30.9 football / $4.3 men's basketball)
7. California: $33.5 million ($27.7 football / $5.8 men's basketball)
8. Colorado: $31.8 million ($27.8 football / $4.0 men's basketball)
9. Oregon: $29.1 million ($24.8 football / $4.3 men's basketball)
10. Utah: $22.4 million ($16.4 football / $6.0 men's basketball)
11. Stanford: $19.6 million ($13.5 football / $6.1 men's basketball)
12. Washington State: $15.1 million ($11.4 football / $3.7 men's basketball)

We're 10th overall, but 8th in combined football + men's basketball. Everyone is within striking distance. Stanford, for example, may be a $25 million bigger athletic department, but when you look at just football and men's basketball... CU is at $31.8 million versus Stanford at $19.6 million. And we don't have the roughly $20 million per year in red ink that programs like Stanford have from non-revenue sports.

For perspective, Washington leads in FB/MBB at $44.1 million. In the Big 12, we've got Texas at $102.4 million ($87.6 / $14.8), Nebraska at $61.5 million ($55.2 / $6.3), Oklahoma at $49.4 million ($42.6 / $6.8) and Texas A&M at $47.4 million ($38.4 / $9.0). And other than Oregon, no one has ridiculous facilities in the Pac like they do in the Big 12. I feel much better about CU's future if we make this jump.

I feel we could do great in recruiting just because of CU location and playing in the PAC 10. You still have some big name schools on the schedule just like we have Texas, OU , NU , Mizz and KU of Late. I really think location and Conference could play a big role in a recruits deciscion. Plus Cabral has the Polynesian pipeline and they all like the PAC 10

outstanding this is great research. We would be about the same place we are in the Big 12, but the gap is much smaller.

Just to be devil's advocate: In the 12 PAC, CU's location would not separate us from the others as much as it does in the Big 12. The very reasons that make it more appealling for fans to be in the 12 PAC, would make it harder to recruit based on that criteria. Likewise with the quality of Education angle.

I still am very much in support of a move to the Pac, but being realistic about our realitive advantages-disadvantages in a new conference.

I listened to Klatt & K....'s show last night on the drive home. They had a Pac-10 guy & Bohn on discussing this (of course I missed them both) but I heard the aftermath. Our location was one of the things they said could actually HURT us in moving to the Pac-10. The Flatirons & Boulder look beautiful to those from the Midwest, South, East Coast, etc. but that for football players from Cali, playing in the Rose Bowl, playing in Berkeley, playing in Seattle - all of those places have beautiful surroundings as well. They did go on to mention how many kids from Cali & Hawaii do come here and love it though.

Joel was very much against it because of the natural rivalries with our Big 8 brethren but said he'd understand if the $$$ aspect was too good to give up.
