The "open competition" at QB entering spring practices

So is this a situation where coaches are paying lip service to a competition or is there a true competition that will play out starting next month?

I hope it is the former and Hansen gets a good majority of the reps because we need him to take a big step forward next season. However, I fear we are going to see both Hansen and Cody each get a good amount of reps and we end up seeing both start at some point next season. In the end, I hope Hansen is given the starting nod early this spring and he can get very comfortable as the starter going into the season.

I admit I am very jaded by the current situation, so my conspiracy theory could be way off. Thoughts?

You scenario is not even the worst case secnario. However, I can't imagine Cody doesn't get near 50% of the reps in spring. Which is stupid.

Open competition my ass. Kiseau and/or Hawk need to get Hansen as many reps as humanly possible. He's the guy next year. Period.

You can have "open competition" at any position other than quarterback. When the QB position is up for grabs, that impacts the whole team. It's a big reason why CU has suffered so greatly in recent years, IMO. You name the QB at the earliest possible moment.

I didn't see the "open competition" comment, but assuming Hawk said it, it further solidifies my already extremely low opinion of him.

i just can't even think about it. have to give Tyler the snaps. imo. unless the "new offense" is to go true spread (rumblings) and the "senior leader" Cody is back in the mix. groan.

frankly, if it's me i run the zone read/high completion stuff/QB draw UT did with McCoy last year with TH. but, i have no doubt we'll outsmart ourselves again with yet another O change.

Poor Tyler. In a way, we all saw this coming, huh?

I don't even know what to say anymore. If CH is "in the mix" and I strongly suspect he will be, get ready for the implosion. I've seen enough in that regard, Hansen should be the man unless Evans, Hirchman, Lobato or another legit QB candidate unseats him. TH has the upside, CH has hit the ceiling. Looking at the stats from last year, it's pretty freakin' obvious who should win between TH and CH.

Another ****ing "open" competition? Jesus ****. This means that Cody will get the start against the lammies.

I heard Tyler will redshirt and only be used in an emergency situation. :smile2:

It seems pretty predictable that DH would have an easier time finding a reason to replace TH and CH. Hopefully open competition means TH goes in number one and gets the most snaps because he needs the most after CH got so much PT in the last 3 years.

No direct quotes from the coaching staff, but an article on rivals today strongly hinted that a starting QB will not be named very soon. It seems extremely odd to me.

This. Hansen should be the starter next year, he is actually a legit D-1 player. Cody plays hard but he just doesn't have what it takes. Hansen should be getting 65-70% of the snaps, Cody 15-20%, and the third/fourth/fifth stringers the rest. If Cody comes out of Spring and is slated as the starter for next year then that's going to be pathetic... just another nail in Hawk's coffin ultimately, as anyone not named Dan Hawkins can see there clearly should be no competition.

On a conceptual level, I believe there should be open competition for every position as a general policy. Especially in the spring. Especially after going 3-9. And I want the USC concept of competing for minutes and maybe a starting position every Tuesday at practice.

But on a practical level, especially as it pertains to the QB position, it's imperative that your guy is a team leader and is as prepared as possible. Cody won't need as many reps as Hansen in order to be able to fill his role (coming in as a relief pitcher or injury replacement). Hansen needs them to establish himself as "The Man" and have the swagger + belief from his teammates that goes with it. IMO, the only way we're successful in 2010 is if we get Hansen to that place.

As I've thought my way through this, I don't think Cody's backup job should be all that open a competition either. One of the freshmen (redshirt or true) will have plenty of time in 2011 to be the backup guy and get reps before taking over in 2012 when we will need to have a truly open competition.

:yeahthat:

Not in favor of Cody stepping on the field for CU again unless we have multiple injuries at the QB position.

He has had three full years to prove that he is capable of being an even-adequate quarterback at this level. He has failed to do so. He has gotten every possible benefit of the doubt with regards to playing time. It is past-time to move on.

Give Hansen the reins from day 1 and give him the full year to get some playing time under his belt. This is how it works for most QB's. If he goes down, put one of our younger guys in there and get them some experience.

The only way that Cody should play this year is if Hansen is absolutely atrocious or if he gets hurt late in the year and it doesn't make sense to burn Hirschman's redshirt.

Cody is a great Buff but he isn't good enough, period.

The only reason there should be any competition is if Hirschman shows up ready to take the reigns.

Had Cody stayed at BSU and not followed papa to CU he wouldn't even be playing there either - Moore would 've beat him out from the first day.

Doesn't surprise me in the least if Cody is starting again next year - more conspiracy theory - Hawk knows he's done at the end of the year so he starts Cody to ensure Cody holds ALL the CU passing records (including interceptions, incompletions and completed 3-yard curls) when they leave so he can stick it to CU on his way out the door.

I don't think that Hansen should just be handed the job from day one. Call it an "Open Competition" or whatever, I think Hansen is the guy in every scenario that doesn't have him getting hurt or suspended. I think it would be very bad to have Tyler relax about his position on the team - he needs to improve every day, and beign pushed from behind by whomever is usually the best motivator.

No way that Cody is going to be the guy next year. Dan knows his behind is on the line. Give Tyler a Spring and Fall practices as the guy, along with playing a non-conference schedule and we will see what he can do.Mark my words, if Cody is the starter for the season, we will have Evans, Laboto and Hirschman as our qb's. Tyler will be long gone. No way he gets jerked around another season.

I've seen this argument way to many times. Its BS. Hansen is an athlete, he wants to improve whether there is someone pushing him or he is the man. What he needs now is the confidence that comes with being named the starter, and not being afraid that he will be yanked out of the game for one little mistake. What make Hansen effective is his run and gun style. If you start talking about bring CH again, you start messing with TH's confidence, and that is the worst thing that we can happen to a free wheeler like him.

I hope Th gets a fair shake. If he's told he's the guy until late August, just to keep him hanging on...man, I don't even want to think about that scenario...

There will be an open and highly spirited competition at the QB position this spring to see who will be Hansen's back up. That will be the extent to what is at stake for the QB spot. Cody is the front runner for the NR 2 spot but only holds a slight edge IMHO. There should be no questions who the NR 1 Qb is, Hansen is the man unless the Freshman ends up being a God (an he won't be).

I do think Cody is the favorite to be the NR 1 clipboard holder but Hawk has recruited a bunch of walk-ons that could make that competition close and really heat things up...

I read the Rivals article and see nothing in it suggesting that Adam has any new information. He states his opinion that here will be open competition, and I think that is solely based on the staff stating often in the past that there will be open competitions at all positions. I've also heard Hawkins state they want 1 QB and they want to pick it sooner than later (in the past).

A few weeks ago there was similiar SPECULATION on the Rivals boards about such a QB competition and a poster by the name of HANFAM stated something to the effect of:
-coaches supporting Tyler as are all players
-Tyler running with 1st team in practices
-Clark Evans is working at TE
-Moten is working at CB

I have reason to believe that this poster knows what they are talking about and they believe it's best to end needless speculation NOW regarding Tyler being screwed....

I will be beyond pissed if Tyler is not our clear #1. Hopefully he continues to mature like he did last season.

Uh, I thought they weren't allowed to practice until Spring?

Either way, Tyler showed me enough to believe he should be the guy for Spring and Fall. If they start jerking him around again..

Oh ok, I thought all they could do was lift weights and stuff like that.

Interesting stuff then, Evans at TE is pretty weird. We sure will have a lot of TEs if all 4 of the recruits get in + Evans.
