Chicago Tribune calls CU a darkhorse for Big Ten

Me no likey! If we change conferences I want to go to a place that I would actually enjoy the road trips.

No, no, and no. Part of the problem now is that CU is too far west for the Big 12, wea re the only mountain time zone team with a bunch of Central time zone cudchewers, why would you want to move another time zone east? Beyond that, CU has natural ties with the west coast. As many have said before, there are more CU grads in Cali than anywhere but CO. Just say no to the Big 10/11. Let them have MU...

By dark horse, he meant pipe dream. They will add Rutgers, Mizzou, and Pitt in that order. All 3 would accept the invite if offered. The only question is can they get ND first, and do they add 1 or 3 in total.

The dark horses here are VERY dark.

Hopefully that gives us a bit more leverage with the Pac. Pac needs us to make a network viable.

About the only thing we'd having going for us is the draw of the TV market and maybe the fact that we usually have a full or nearly-full capacity crowd at football games, but as for basketball attendance and geography we're a stretch. Rutgers was nearly identical to us in the attendance and percent-capacity, but they obviously bring a much larger TV market. Pitt or Missouri is a better fit for the Big 10 than Rutgers but it may end up being Rutgers solely because of the TV market they would bring.

If I was the Big 10, I'd go with Rutgers for the 12th team. Media market, academic fit, recruiting hotbed (especially for basketball), natural rival for Penn State. And if I was thinking of going to 16, I'd go Rutgers, Syracuse, Maryland, Boston College and Missouri.

Yes, we are a DARK horse, but it is interesting that CU made the Big Ten's famed list over Texas. And if you believe this article, we are anywhere from #5 to #7 on the list. That is a feather in our cap.

The only way I see this happening though is if the Pac 10 thing falls apart... AND... the Big Ten expands to 16, taking 5 teams (us, Mizz, Neb, Kans, and one Big East school). Both of these scenarios are unlikely.

I think this is a great thing. More leverage is always a plus, and even if we randomly did join the Big 10, don't they have by far the best TV deal already going? We wouldn't be dealing with the hypothetical Pac 10 network which doesn't even exist yet and who knows how awesome the deal will actually be.

pac 10(12) or bust, boys!

the b10 is a fine conference of schools, but we are not a great fit. geographically, it would be challenging... and, we'd have a really hard time competing with ohio state, michigan, and penn state on athletic budgets. we'd find ourselves, i would guess, in about the bottom third in terms of resources, as opposed to maybe around the 50th percentile in the p10. besides, it is ass cold throughout the b10. can't we get some roadies that actually would be enjoyable?????

Yes, the Big Ten Network has been a jackpot for the league and its members since its launch in '07. The SEC is also about to launch a network that will provide similar economics.

Well you see what I'm getting at. Trust me I want CU to go to the Pac 10, I just think this is good in the idea that it gives us a little leverage. I agree that the fit is pretty bad and I really am quite against these crazy geographical oddities of having schools like Colorado or Texas in the Big 10.

i don't think we need a lot of leverage w/ the p10. i think that logic and the reality of the circumstances pretty much dictates that CU will receive an offer from the p10 if they decide to expand (which they seem to be intent on doing). i don't think we need to do any wooing--- we are the target, imho.

we've discussed, ad nauseum, the various scenarios and i have a hard time picturing any scenario of expansion for the p10 that doesn't include CU. whether CU will accept the invitation is another matter entirely, of course.

the bigger mystery is who the second team they invite will be... there are lots of ways they could go on that piece.

really, i think the only scenario i can come up with (having spun far too many cycles on this already) where someone OTHER than CU gets an invitation, would be if they decide they want texas and texas a&M as a package deal. that scenario has a ton of holes in it, however, starting with each of the texas schools being willing and permitted to make such a move together.

i respect the b10 and i especially like the fact that they are far stronger academically, top to bottom, than the b12. but, CU doesn't need them to be a stalking horse to get the p10 offer. the really critical thing is that our leadership needs to have the vision, strength, and will to answer the door when the p10 rings the bell.

The more demand the better position we are in. However, I am sure that our potential invitation (does not equate to us accepting) is contingent upon them expanding to 14 or 16 teams with some combination of Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, CU, and another school.

I think Rutgers is Big Ten bound as their 12th team.

St. Louis is already a "Big Ten Network" market as Charter Cable just added the network to their Expanded Basic cable. While that doesn't mean the ratings will be really high, part of the draw for the network is get the $1 per cable subscriber in those markets and that has already been accomplished in St. Louis. Pitt doesn't bring any new markets as Penn State dominates the Pennsylvania metro areas and the network is already on those cable distributors.

The SEC elected not to form their own network once ABC/ESPN and CBS put a combined $3 billion on the table over the next 15 years.

One of the comments to the story said that Rutgers was ranked 92nd, but that was at the end of 2008-09. I just looked it up and as of 1/11/2011 they were tied for 49th, which would more support what you're saying regarding academic fit.

Does anybody else remember Wednesday nights at the Darkhorse (and by remember, I leaving home to go there...things tended to get blurry after that)? Dollar shots? 57 cent beers? Ro-sham-bo knocking out some Joe Cocker covers? Good times.

The Big 10 has got to the most boring conference in which to travel. Of the great recruits from Big 10 country are already lined up for either Michigan or An Ohio State University.

I wasted 2 years of my life at Purdue. Don't even think about the West Lafayette road trip.

the darkhorse was awesome. i had this card (i still have it, and it doesn't have an expiration date!!!) that entitled me to any draft beer or well drink for $1.19, any night of the week. that was a well-used discount card. i had many good times in the darkhorse and learned some life lessons there too.

Big Ten to add Rutgers? That's even more absurd than CU going to the Pac 10.. New York could give a **** about Rutgers.. As much as ESPN likes to project that the campus is right next to Downtown Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty overlooks the stadium the fact of the matter is that Rutgers is in NEW JERSEY and its athletic program has been a joke for years.. The Big 10 isn't going to add some loser program with no tradition.. I got a better chance banging Kim K than Rutgers going to the Big Ten..

As a fan I'm against this. I agree that we'd be buried by most of those teams (like you said above). But how would you see it as a business move. I'm sure Vandy is pretty happy to be a part of the SEC even though they lose year and and year out.

Maybe this is a stupid question. I'm just wondering how the University may look at this if the B10 offered.

I think you underestimate Rutgers.

PAC 12 roadies would win hands down, but a lot of the Big 10 cities are great and fun college towns - Madison, Champaign, Columbus, Ann Arbor, etc. Just not West Lafayette.

 Yeah, I must have missed when they won the Big East football championship and the Big East basketball championship these past 10 years..

The Big 10 isn't going to add some loser program..

I think it was more of a statement regarding your chances with Kim K. than it was acknowledgment of Rutger's fine football tradition.
