Found it interesting that Bandison has 9 guys for 3 position. There is no chance a true freshmen will play in 2010 on the DL. West, Bonsu, and Kasa did that last year.

Given we started the season with Pericek and the other 3 true freshmen playing in their first college games, I think the DL will easily be VASTLY improved over their play early in 2009. This unit looks to be good and deep.

I think we have talent that we have not seen at DL in quite a while, but I am not sure I would call us "deep" just yet. Merely having players to fill out a depth does not equal depth. I like Pericak, Cunningham, and Bonsu; Goree and Obi are have been disappointments thus far. Herrod, Kasa, and West at DE form a nice group there, but it seems to be a big drop-off from there.

I really like the potential of our starting defense, but I think we are in real trouble if even just a couple injuries hit us.
 
Well I like what I saw out of West and Kasa last year, as well as Herrod. Only one of them playing at a time kind of sucks, especially when you consider we trade a DE for a NB where the depth is hardly solid. At DT I like what I have seen out of Bonsu, Cunningham, and Pericek, the rest haven't done anything at all to warrant praise.
 
I still think that there is a chance that Poston could work his way on the field if injuries play a factor. I think we are two-deep at each position but that is all, some of the additional depth comes from having guys like Obi and Bonsu that can move around the line, but they still are only one player.

If Obi and Goree really do step up, maybe that redshirt goes to Bonsu depending on how he recovers?

I like our group a lot this season, and think it will really help our athletic LB's as stated in the article too.

With Herrod-Pericak-Cunningham it's almost like 3 tackles in there.

I continue to worry about depth, but thinking of the projected defensive starters really has me excited for the Fall.
 
It's technically a 4-3, but a LB lines up at one DE. They did a good job last year of mixing up some things on obvious passing downs. I saw Herrod move inside and they would have a really mobile front of West, Herrod, Cunningham (who moves really well for a DT) and a LB up front. I even saw a LB in for West at time. Then they would have 6 DB's in the game. I actually like what Riddle did after the first few games.

As for depth, I guess I am taking Bandison at his word that Goree is going to be at least serviceable as a backup. That gives us 4 DT's who can play. In the good years with Hypolite/Nicholas, we really had nothing behind them. In fact, Lawson and the Cherry Creek disappointment (Kaynor) played more a few years ago than they did last year. So I think there's a lot more depth than we are used to here. Maybe not good depth though, just more than we are used to.

We could probably survive an injury at this position on Defense more so in 2010 than any prior year in recent memory. In fact, an injury to a starting LB, Corner or Safety might be devestating (or might not be). But it does look like we could survive one at DL this year. Knock on wood we don't have to.

Lastly, if Bonsu redshirted, that would only mean that Goree or Obi (or both) came out of the dark BIG time. They were both here last year as 3rd year guys and watched from the bench as big Nate took a lot of snaps as a true-freshmen. So yes, it's way to early to start hyping these two. I read a lot of nice things about the Kaynor (5th year guy) last spring and preseason only to see him backup true freshmen. So I guess "we'll see". This is a good year for Buff fans to be from the Show-Me state.

It will only get better next spring after Big Ed Nuckols transfers in.

I guess this is what it comes down to for me. We may be improving the depth on the DL, but we still have a ways to go. We should be looking at more than 4 DTs ready to play (not including Obi here), shouldn't we?
 
This is a sneaky-good group. Obi needs to realize who he is, where he's at, how much time he has left, and start playing with reckless abandon.

Yes, but compared to where we've been at DT and having to play true freshmen and where we are at with some other positions......... I'd say DT is "well stocked". 5 guys with game experience (including Obi here). Both starters back. None of the 5 are seniors. This isn't our thinnest position by a longshot.

And as you say, Herrod can move inside if we need him. He is still 280 lbs and strong like a DT.

Didn't both Goree and Obi have to put on weight last season. Maybe they just didn't get into game shape with the extra bulk.
 
Not really. Goree has been twice moved to OG as a stop gap in mid-season (played some there in 2008 and practiced there some in 2009). He's been big and strong enough for a few years.

Obi was a DE and has been another enigma. This past off-season he "grew into DT". He seemed to have the measureables at DE before and didn't see the field.

Let's remember, no one predicted Pericek would start vs. CSU last year. There was all this talk (and justified concern) going into the fall. Herrod, Kaynor and even Lawson were seen as the guys getting the reps. I never saw it reported that Pericek was running with the ones. There was obvious concern on the staff and low and behold Pericek ends up starting. Could have been some injuries there as well - not 100% sure. But I believe the young guy just beat out the competition. Was he a B12 DT at the beginning of 2009? I don't think so. By mid season, Pericek looked pretty good.

Agreed with that.

Forgot about Goree's back-and-forth from OL to DL, definitely doesn't help a guy get better quickly. I hope that it does "switch on" for him this year, I'd rather have 3 capable NT's and with Bonsu's injury would be nice to have a guy like Goree step up and take the pressure off him to perform.

For any of the position coaches taking heat, I've always felt Romeo's wasn't justified. I think we'll see that bear out this season.
 
It's hard not to like the starters. Lots of talent and enthusiasm there. I must don't see the depth, especially on the DL. If Cunningham, Perciak and Bonsu can stay healthy, DL will be a strength, if one goes down, it'll be a weakness.
 
The line has more depth but I would say it still lacks NFL type talent at the position.. I need to see more of West before I'm ready to call him a sure thing..

Herrod is a solid player though. I consider him probably the best player on the defense.. Perciak probably has the most upside. Still a lot of what ifs... We all thought going into last year the OL was going to be so much better.. That didn't turn out to be true. So I'm going to cautious before I say the DL is going to be a strength.
 
I'm kind of concerned about how we created a hole in our depth chart by playing all the freshmen last year. We have a bunch of junior and sophomore DLs. Then, assuming no freshmen play, Poston redshirts to bulk up and be a DT and Uzo-Diribe spends the much-needed year in the weight room while redshirting. That leaves us with no one in the sophomore class on the DL in 2011. Those kind of holes on our depth chart have been killing us and it was something Hawk was supposed to be correcting. I guess we can always bring in a JUCO or two in 2012.

I do like the talent we're developing, though.
 
A 1 year hole is nothing to worry about. It's when you have to go to true freshmen to play significant time that kills you. One of the TE's will be a DL is my guess.
