The return game

The Buffs didn't have a single punt return in excess of 15 yards last year? Why is Riddle still coaching ST? :bang:

I think you can mark it with B-Lock and Jaffee as our #1 and #2 KO returners. They had great numbers last year and should be better in 2010. Kind of a "no brainer" imo.

Stewart, I believe, is still in a battle with Toney Clemons and Quick Hildreth. Any of the three should be a major upgrade over last year, so I really don't care too much.

I don't want either Scotty or Speedy fielding punts, or Espy for different reasons.

I would like to see Q or WillJeff win that job.

“I don’t think we can, you know, try to shelve guys or hide guys for the sake of doing whatever,” Hagan said. “I think we need to play our best guys. Those two guys happen to be our two best guys with the ball in their hands. Anytime we can get the ball in their hands, we need to do it. I don’t think we need to worry about a guy getting hurt.”

That sounds a little like a "desperation" move that we are going to go for broke this season at every spot.

Has Orms been in the mix for punt/kick returns? I don't know if he has the straight line speed of some of the others but he was damn good in that role in HS.

I would prefer Q or someone who won't contribute a ton right now on offense or deffense, they can focus on their job as a returner and I don't want to see speedy go down on a silly injury returning a punt.

 At least, until one of the incoming or other RB's shows they can be productive...

I think my biggest issue with Speedy is that he has fumbling issues. But I also agree the injury potential is a concern. Just reinforces the issue I have with the 2010 squad: we have depth issues at several positions.

Rino, you mentioned Orms, I think you run into the same issues with depth at the CB position. He is currently slotted to be the nickel back as far as I know.

A return guy will have a bigger impact on most games than a nickel back. I think it's worth the risk if he is your best guy (not saying he is the best, just if he is).

I can see it both ways. There's the injury risk. But there's also the aspect of it getting him into a groove before his first carry of a series. And, of course, you need to get the ball in the hands of your best playmakers as often as you can if you want to be successful (something we have not been good at).

I dunno, we play nickel quite a bit, but we need to upgrade the punt returns dramatically. Guess this thread reinforces my major issue with the 2010 squad: we have some serious depth issues at several different positions.

I think Orms spoke about it himself in his article from a few weeks ago. Think he said something that he wanted to concentrate on the nickel and safety positions and some special teams spots, but wanted to nail those down before he tried for a returner spot maybe next year.

Excited to see the kickoff returners in action. Still worried about Speedy fielding punts. Would like to see them get Simmons on the field somehow and I think his speed would be an asset if he can hold on to the ball.

This tells me 2 things:

1. The staff is pretty high on Hildreth. By rolling the dice with our only 2 experinced backs on special teams, they must be pretty comfortable with Q stepping in as a plan B at RB.

2. Andre Simmons may never see meaningful time on the field at CU.

:yeahthat: I don't think of Speedy as a punt returner.. Seems like an unnecessary risk..

I can see BLock back there and he's very good in space but he is backup running back. However, its pretty risky putting your starting skill people on returns of any sort. I always think of Jason Seahorn everytime. With our depth and the fact CU has had awful luck, think its a bad idea.

You might think of Sehorn, but I think of Maclin. He returned punts at Mizzou and was just fine.

Very true and your right but its a risky thing. I know Sehorn was never the same after. I think we could all agree we gotta get somebody back there that can make something happen, our return game has been pathetic for awhile now.

Speedy isn't Maclin though..

I'm not saying he is. I'm saying you can't play scared.

Has everyone here forgotten Ben Kelly? Often your best returners will be guys who are starters at other positions. You can't play scared, you have to play to win.

If Speedy turns out to be head and shoulders better than everyone else they try at PR, then I'm cool with that. But nobody seems to have separated themselves from the pack so far, so why risk the injury? I understand about Maclin and Kelly, etc etc; but those guys left no room for competition, I don't think that is the case here, if anything I would rather have B-Lock on Kick Return and Punt Return duties. He catches a ball better than Speedy (not saying that translates directly to punt catching, but you gotta think it does) and has not yet had fumbling issues on returns the way Speedy has had from running back.

Maybe Speedy isn't the "starter" at RB and this is a good way to get him the ball? IDK

You put your best players on the field. Period. To do otherwise exhibits a quitter mentality. It's "we don't want to get hurt". Bullsh!t. You don't put your 5th string conerback or 3rd string WR at PR just to keep the starter healthy. That's just the stupidest idea in the history of football. Injuries can happen on any play.

This is the kind of mentality that absolutely drives me nuts, and Hawk is famous for it. He plays not to lose. At the end of a half, he's more likely to take a knee than try to score. What kind of nonsense is that? It's the offenses job to score. PERIOD. Every time there is a punt, it's a chance to score, but we don't look at it that way at CU. Grrrrrrrr. Now my blood pressure is up. Thanks a lot.

I like the idea of Clemons at PR, he could be our Dez Bryant. At KR I thought Lockridge and Jaffee did pretty good last year, they might not be remembered forever for how great they were, but 25+ yards per is pretty good. Either way, we have to get more out of our PR game. 3 yards per is just not going to cut it, far too many times our offense got screwed on field position for a number of drives because we had nothing to offer at PR, plus our offense sucks, but maybe they'd suck less from the 30 rather than the 15.

I know what you are saying Sacky, but I do think there are exceptions. If Speedy IS absolutely the best guy, then I'm all for it. But if he is "in the mix" with other guys that we have deeper positions at, then I'm not on board. Personally, I don't think that Speedy is our best punt-return type guy, so I'm not sold on it right now.

FWIW, I think that Tony Jones, Donnie Duncan, or Terrel Smith might be guys come fall anyway.
