denver post q/a with hawkins...

For the most part, I liked what he had to say.

I thought it was strange that he said he looked at a recruits mom to determine how big they might grow. Kinda funny.

generalities and platitudes. and some of the old Dan rah rah, motivational quoting (Churchill) and social theorizing: fans are negative because of the economy (not losing).

could have been written any of the last 4 summers, imo.

Exactly, same Hawk droppings, different day.

but, don't forget: the riddler is one of the most knowledgeable special teams coaches in the nation.

****! i am trying so hard not to be so negative, but wtf is he smoking????? oh, mercy, mercy me.

That is my friend's way of testing if a girl is marrage material.

All during his recruitment, I heard how Zach Grossnickle was coming in to compete at kicker, but I caught the recent scrimmage and was blown away by his punting. I timed a couple over 4.5 seconds (hang time) and one was up there hanging over 5 seconds. So, three punting questions: Did you know he could punt like that when you recruited him or were you surprised? Why didn't you play him last year when our punter was struggling? He looked very confident when he went out to make his field goals, so do you have any reservations about having one player do both jobs if he continues to be the most consistent kicker on the roster?

This has to be AJ, right??

Dan Hawkins said:
Your support of me, Mike Bohn, the football and athletic programs and the University is more important now than ever. Remember Coach Mac's saying: The four most important words in the English language, "I believe in you." I believed in Colorado at a very tough time in its history; let's all believe in this place now when it may not be the easiest thing to do.

The power and magic of people with a purpose will make it happen. I think the people on campus and in the Dal Ward Athletic Center know what we have done and what we are up against. Every situation has a different boiling point for success,
CU coach Dan Hawkins watches the offense during practice last season. (John Leyba, The Denver Post)
and I believe we are getting closer to that point. We are at a critical point and we need the Buff faithful to be supportive of the program; if everyone rolls up their sleeves and rows in the same direction, we will reach the destination.

I think we all believe in "this place". That doesn't mean we have to believe in every single person employed there. I didn't believe in Ward Churchill. I didn't believe in Kathy McConnell Miller. And I don't ****ing believe in Dan Hawkins anymore. Thanks for believing in that million dollar paycheck there, coach. Quite the heroic leap of faith, that was. Dan, you can blather all you want about all of us "row(ing) in the same direction", but some of us can actually see the ****ing waterfall and realize it might be kind of smart to change course....

Do you feel that not naming a starter at quarterback during spring ball leaves the team unstable going into summer workouts and fall practice? It seems that naming the QB during the spring will build cohesiveness with the offense. Is there danger in "starting from scratch" if the starter isn't named until the fall?
--Jen, Broomfield
DH: We do our best to provide the first- and second-team guys nearly equal reps throughout spring, and many of the players will see action on both units. When you have proven players at a position with experience, it is a little easier to 'name' a guy in spring. Whenever things are close, the competition always brings out the best in the real competitors.

Did not really have much of an issue with the interview as a whole, considering what Mick has already said about the same general platitudes. But cut the horse**** on this response. The QBs have never had nearly equal reps throughout the spring. It may be more equal this spring, but it definitely was not the case the last few years.

he did say one thing that was true... he said that, in the national championship year, Mac said that we were about 5 plays from starting that year 1-5-1 and that is the honest truth. of course, that team was talented, mentally tough, and well-disciplined. they didn't ever quit.

I also have my new favorite Hawkism: "If everyone rolls up their sleeves and rows in the same direction, we will reach the destination."

i still wince everytime i think about the Stanford WR who flat drops a game-winning TD pass in the south endzone. i was sitting right there.

the thing about that quote is that while it may be true about Mac's guys, that in no way suggests that Hawk's 5 plays away from a bowl game is "true" by reverse proof. and that seems to be what is working here.....and then the inevitable Hawkism about getting some momentum going....as if like the Greek gods they swoop out of the air onto the battlefield and carry the day for the Buffs. i think our guys need to play good football, not sit around waiting for momentum to "happen".

:yeahthat: What Hawk really might want to focus on is WHY Mac's teams made those plays and his teams don't. He seems to think it's some kind of cosmic force, beyond anybody's control. I tend to think there are far more tangible explanations...

I enjoyed the read, too. The uniform question was horrible. I think the newer duds look terrific and so do most of the critics. The silver is a great touch and I cannot wait for the throwbacks at home all season.

Dammit...you beat me to it. Obviously it's our own Alferd. The only other thing he could have done to tip his hand is share his favorite pub in which to watch away games.

I did chuckle a little. In his opening response, Coach discussed how positive and supportive the CU fans are, and then went on to answer a stream of questions accusing him of not readying his team for game day, showing enough emotion or firing his coaches.

Makes absolutely no sense. I thought this was funny:
DH: Thanks for your interest! We need the Buff Nation now more than ever! Remember Winston Churchill and Apollo 13, 'THIS IS OUR FINEST HOUR!' Support your university and support your football program - GO BUFFS!
Guess Churchill has replaced "This place was burned to the ground when I got here".

I think Hawk brings up Coach Mac so you all subliminally think back to the good old days and Hawk can dodge the questions. Basically a "I think about what Coach Mac ***don't think about reality don't think about reality*** says that you can't go to the well too much... " Hawk brought up Coach Mac in THREE different answers.

I am a Corn fan as you know but man I feel for you guys. Hawk says the most feelgood stupid crap ever. He basically says there is a formula to motivating players? You can only motivate them 3 or 4 times a season with a Rudy speech so you have to pick and choose the right timing? That is retarded.

I know you all hate Bo Pelini but that guy flat out motivates our players nearly every game, not just 3 or 4 times. That is just silly. I could go on and on but I am sure you don't want to hear it from a Corn fan. Plus you guys know it already I am sure you are all just biding your time until CU can afford to Can the Dan.

Agree with you 100% except for hating Bo. I hate the gun hider. Bo is entertaining.

While the kind words are most certainly appreciated...please take no offense when I say, we have reached a new low, even Corn nation has been reduced to feelings of pity when they look at our FB program. At least when you guys were hatin' we knew we were at least on the CFB radar.

I'd feel a whole lot better about this and any other interview with Talkins if Mac would actually come out and say some of those things that Talkins says he does, instead of Mac said this, or Mac said that.

Mac said to tell Hugegroove to STFU.

Honestly. He did.

The "This is our final hour" quote is telling.

Winston Churchill made his speech in 1940 to the Brittish House of Commons. He told of the disastrous turn of events in Europe and asserted that Britain stood alone against the seemingly unstoppable German military juggernaut. The Brittish way of life was under a mortal threat from Hitler's war machine.

For Hawkins, who plays the role of the Germans? University of Texas? Restless CU fans who are calling for his head? The economic environment?

For Apollo 13, an American spacecraft was gimping along barely able to support the three astronauts who were on board. The mission to land on the moon had been altered and replaced with the simple objective of bringing 3 government employees safely back to earth. In the movies, NASA Flight Director Gene Kranz was responding to the comment, "This could be the worst disaster NASA's ever faced."

Who is the damaged spaceship? The CU football program? The fans? Dan Hawkin's resume?

It's easy to get fired up by someone who starts throwing Coach Mac's name around and ties it to some great moments in history. But I'm stuggling to see the context.

The better Kranz quote to use would be, "Failure is not an option." But this quote seems more apt: "Hurrah boys, we've got them! We'll finish them up and then go home to our station." - General Custer.

IMO, Hawk qoutes people so he'll sound smart/erudite. I'm not sure there is much going on in the ol' Hawk noggin.

I would like to know how many plays we'll be short of making a bowl game this year. Too bad that wasn't one of the questions.

It's really sad you guys are not doing your part to turn this program around. Make some calls to Mike Bohn, jackasses.

You are on either rowing on the boat or in Apollo 13 hurtling through space. You decide.
