How do you think this years group of linebackers rates compared to the three previous years under Hawkins?

Only time will tell, but in the three practices I've observerd it appears to be a more balanced group with a lot of upside, but with no real standout. Kenslers article below makes it sound like Cabreal is a happy camper with this group. If anyone can get the most out of someone playing linebacker, it's got to be Brian hands down.

I think this group is much more athletic than last year's unit was. I think it is a really good unit, especially once Major gets his feet wet.

This unit certainly has the talent to be better than the 2008 and 2009 units, but is still a far cry from the 2007 grouping.

Sipili has finally had the lightbulb go on. Cabral once said he's got the potential to be the best ILB he's ever had. He's going to be an absolute stud this year.

Major brings athleticism and closing burst we haven't seen at CU since Chad Brown was playing for us. Major's going to be all over the field this year.

Someone needs to step up from the group of Rippy, Webb and Harrington for the 34 look. But they've all got talent. Gouin's solid, too.

Beatty is going to bring the heat as a DE/OLB for us this year. Ahles has found a home at this position and will push as a backup. Nobriga could be special, but he's still young and needs to learn the position along with more pass rush moves.

I honestly believe it's the best group since 2005 (Dawn, Iwuh, Dizon, Jones & Bad Thad).

Sipili, Major, Beatty, Ahles and some question marks.

Rippy, Nobriga and Webb are making too many mistakes and thinking too much based on what I saw at practice.
Mahnke could put on some weight and be an impact player. He also could benefit from a redshirt if Harrington is ready to play.
Haven't seen anything on Gouin - sort of expected he would be a Jeff Smart type. Local boy who transferred from Air Force.

Lots of people were down on Mahnke and he'd lost confidence in himself. But he's been playing fast and aggressive since moving to Will. He has been surprisingly good there. I'd like to see him redshirt, though.

Sipili is the key. He steps up and we're okay. Still not sure I see an impact player in that group (hope I am wrong). But if Sipili continues to struggle with consistency, it is going to look a lot like 2009.

Either Mahnke or Harrington should get RS if we can stay healthy.

:yeahthat:

I don't see any Dizon's on our roster..

Last year we heard about what a great group of LB's we had, and that Burton "had the light go on and he gets it now". Then fall ball started and Burton had a moment or two, but nothing compared to the praise he was getting in the spring. Sipili might be differenct since he has played in games for of the last five years, but he is still a question mark. He did well at times last year, but he still had moments where he seemed to get lost on the field. If he truely is studying film, and is looking to get a little bit lighter and faster (going from 250 to 240-235 where Burton stayed big) then he might do what we were told Burton was going to do last year.

At the end of the day it is a wait and see game. Last year the offense was able to run the ball during the spring. This year they are having trouble. Maybe it is due to better DL and LB's, or our offense just continues to get $**tier.
