Start Hirschman?

Why not?

The vibe I'm getting out of Spring ball is that neither QB is impressing anybody. If that's the case, then why not throw Hirschman into the fray?

I remember when B-Jax was starting and much of the Buff-supportin' world accused Coach Hawkins of nepotism (if you can imagine) because he was protecting our finst quarterback's redshirt status. That quarterback was Cody of course. Everybody was convinced that Cody was the answer to all of our problems.

Anyway, I had a point I was going to make, but I forget what it was.

uhhh. They aren't impressing (especially compared to each other), but they are sure looking one hell of a lot better then Hirsch. let him RS, why waste a year under hawk?

You have got to be kidding....If it was Year 1, 2, or 3 for Danny...maybe. But his ass is on the line this year (it should have been removed at the end of last year, obviously). He has to go with the best chance to win NOW. Unless you are saying that Tyler is a complete bust, he has to go with him....

Am I the only one that remembers Hansen doing some pretty impressive things last year? That dude made some serious plays when he had defenders bearing down on him unblocked and really making plays with both his arms and legs. Sadly when he found open receivers after scrambling for his life, half the time they dropped the passes as they hit them in the hands. I'm not saying Hansen is the second coming, but I think he has earned the right to start the season as a starter...especially after all the redshirt crap he has put up with.

And, by the way, if you want a complete bust, pan to the left....

The problem is Hawk is going to an offense 95% dependent upon the QB being able to execute without run support. So obviously, opposing D coord.s know this and don't worry about diversifying the D to counteract. This places an unordinate amount of pressure on the QB to read and react, and blocking support from the Oline and especially blocking assignments from the WR's not involved in the play. Otherwise, we will only see 5yd outs with the receiver facing the QB, because there is no blocking on the surrounding D.

This is not the pistol but year five of the Hawk Offense.

In hindsight, I sure wish they would have started Cody that year. It couldn't have been any worse of a season...

From what I saw, yup.

well I think we will see some of Nick at the spring game, and if he looks good, while Tyler and Cody struggle this place is going to melt the **** down.

I take it that u aren't impressed with Hirsch's talent.. Not a good sign since everyone said he was a player..

You run a real risk of ruining a young QB if you throw him into games before he is ready. You have to be careful with QBs because once they lose the confidence, it is extremely hard to get that back. Redshirt him.

Don't think I said that. I just said Hirsch is definitely not looking anywhere near ready. I mean, he throws a nice ball (weird motion), but he's getting receivers killed and just has no idea where to throw. I mean, for god sakes, he had to have cody standing behind him during the hurry up to understand the signals and call out plays.

However, he is a true frosh and early enroller going through spring practice for the first time. And he's behind 2 guys that are sucking up a lot of reps.

However, he looks the part. Lobato too. Hope they both stick it out till the Hawk clan is gone.

His head has to be spinning right now. College is a big enough adjustment for an early enrollee, but then you factor in what position he plays and that he is getting his first exposure to college football at the same time... yeah. My guess is a year on the scout team would do him some good.

if they have any hope at all of actually saving their sorry own arses this year, they will not throw a true frosh in at qb. i think part of what is going on with hawkins (the coach) is that he knows he has no margin for error and he believes that, since cody knows the offense better, he may make fewer mistakes this season. if cody plays mistake-free ball, then i think hawkins (the coach) thinks that it may give them a better chance to win.

of course, we don't know for sure whether they really are going to start cody ahead of hansen in live action, either. but, if they do, i believe it will be based upon the thinking i highlighted above. this will be flawed reasoning, however, because no play is perfectly executed. and, when your team is generally physically outmatched by its opponent, you need a combination of good coaching, good luck, good execution, and a great qb to bail your ass out. hansen may not be "all that" but he is better when something goes wrong than cody is, by a wide margin.

and, i suspect, much will be going wrong this season. we have a flawed scheme (again). we have injuries already to key guys (again). we have a qb controversy (again). we have more "simplification" of the offense (again). and, we have no apparent running game (again). play the guy who can beat you with his feet in these circumstances. that is a coaching axiom.

I have two words for you:

They've just been messing with us, and April fool's day is officially over.

Bring on da man.

If the preference is that Hirschman redshirts as a true frosh, totes a clipboard as a RS-Frosh, and then fights it out with our 2011 QB recruit for the job in 2012... that's not exactly anyone saying that he's down on the guy. He could be a 3-year starter at CU. Not a lot of guys have done that.

Even if Hirschman redshirts in the 2010 season, he could still be a four-year starter if he wins the job the following year.

That idea is outdated. If a qb doesn't have mental toughness you should find out now rather than kidding yourself.

They either have it or they don't.

If Hirschman doesn't have it we can recruit 2 or 3 maybe a jc qb for the next year.

It is outdated? Based on what? He can have plenty of mental toughness and if he gets his brains beat in behind a bad offensive line, you have a real problem on your hands. It not applicable to every situation, but I would say people are getting way ahead of themselves with Hirschman.

If he never sees a snap this year, it does not mean he automatically sucks. "They have either have it or they don't." Okay, so if a true freshman cannot come in and turn around a team that has had four straight losing seasons, you can definitively say he doesn't have it? Interesting.

And please tell me you are not serious about recruiting 3 QBs in one class.

USC, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, KSU, Wyoming, Utah etc. have all used freshman qb's without any serious damage to them. They either have the brains, heart and guts to perform or they don't.
Next year we will only have 2 qb's on scholarship and so far neither has proven themselves, so to answer you directly, yes we may need to take three qb's next year.
If they don't pan out they can be moved like Lobato (apparently) and Evans.

First off, let's remove USC and Texas from this discussion before we go down that road any further. If this team had a quarter of the talent those two team enjoy, I would be all for a true freshman QB taking the reins. And other teams certainly have had some success with freshmen QBs, but the idea that if a true freshmen QB is not ready to play right away then he automatically lacks brains, heart, and guts is plain stupid. But you are free to write off Mr. Hirschman as a has been if he does end up redshirting this year.

And the idea of taking three QBs in one class is definitely thinking outside the box, which is to say no one does anything like that because there is little to no chance you will upgrade your talent at the QB position in that scenario. Just filling out a depth with warm bodies does nothing to help the overall situation. Do you seriously think a coaching staff can convince three above average QB prospects to sign in the same recruiting class?

play whichever one is best..

What do you think will happen if Cody trots out onto the field as the starter against CSU? I mean, what will happen to the already demoralized fan support of the CU buffs? I think it would be crippling

We shall see who the coaching staff is next year.. I think we need at least two next though whether that's two freshman or one JC and a freshman. .

Give Hirschman some time, it's just spring ball. I bet he'll be a lot more impressive in the fall unless his mechanics are garbage or he decides to not bother to crack open the playbook over the summer. The guy had an offer from Harvard, if the offense is too complicated for him, then we might have a problem.

Folsom will quickly become a very nasty place if Cody plays and the team struggles, IMO.

I don't know why you would play ANYBODY this year if they have the opportunity to redshirt. This is the lamest of the lame duck coaching staffs. Why waste time learning an offense/defense for a coach who isn't going to be there next year.

Redshirt.

I say we redshirt him for the first 5 games then start him the rest. Ocasionally taking him out on third downs to put a more experienced QB in.
