In the Trenches (great blog post by Montana)

Just a symptom of an overall problem across the board at most/all positions. This staff really has trouble settling on starters unless someone like Dizon makes it painfully obvious for them. Wanting competition at all spots every spring is fine to a point, but dividing the reps amongst so many players seems really detrimental to developing quality starting units in the end.

But it seems to me that it would behoove the Buffs to stop consider these players as "interchangeable parts"

Couldn't agree more. Jack of all trades, master of none will not win any battles on the line.

At least this joke of a coaching staff is consistent, if nothing else.

If the odyssey of Bryce Givens was stable, he would have played every game at RT, Miller would have played every game at RG, and this wouldn't look so confusing. Iltis got hurt and Stevens took over.

Left Guard is the only position they were flip-flopping. Brinking in a Juco to join the other 27,000 JR O-linemen on this team speaks loudly. They need someone to step up at LG. This unit will be our strenght imo. I know that's a leap of faith, but it's an educated one. (I vocally stated that our 2009 season results were seriously at risk before 2009 due to our situation on the O-Line - my hope has turned to confidence. I've seen nothing this spring to bolster it however. But I will go on record saying I think we will be good on the O-Line and thus our QB and RB's will look much improved.

Hmmm...an educated leap of faith. Thats a good one. I have not seen or heard anything that would suggest that this o- ine will be improved. A year of getting man-handled and abused at LOS is not the kind of experience that makes a unit better. Add to that a coaching staff that hobbles the players and the formula for disaster has been created.

Sorry but i can not share your optimism and faith.

Good question. You would think solder, miller and givens( if he's right) would be a solid 3 to start with. Then you have a group of iltis, richter, tuioti and others.

Like BB stated above, competition is good but this staff needs to decide who the guys are and give them the majority of the reps and get some cohesiveness out of them and let them gel.

But we're wasting our breath because the man in charge will never change this formula.

For lack of knowing anything else, let's go with the guys who give us a chance to win games:

Ryan Miller at Right Tackle. Since 2007 we are 8-7 in games that he gets significant snaps or plays the entire game at RT. (We are 2-7 with him at RG)

Blake Behrens at Left Guard . Since 2008 we are 8-9 in games the he gets significant snaps or plays the entire game at Guard.

Solder at LT, obviously.

Mike Iltis at Center. We were 2-2 in games that he started or played significant snaps in 2009 with him at Center.

We need Max Tuioti-Mariner at the Right Guard spot. In his only 3 starts in 2008 (before injury) we were 3-0 with him at Guard.

Maybe it is time to redshirt Givens and get him up to actual Big 12 playing weight.

What I didn't see in the O-line last year was consistency. Case in point, decent games against ku, nu, atm, okie state, but looked especially bad against ut, Toledo, csuwe, & isu. And very mediocre against the other teams. Win or lose this year, they need to step it up with execution of their plays by reducing the penalties. They killed a lot of scoring drives last year because of that.

We all know the situation with MTM is not as easy as stating the 3-0 record in his starts. The injuries cannot be ignored, hell he has even had issues this spring.

Sure, that is why I said we "need" him there. I think it would be best for Max to rehab for a full year rather than rush back too soon (even though it has been a while, he had some severe injuries).

I really hope Richter can take over and provide the much needed help at guard this season, especially due to MTM injuries.

Max has been re-habbing for over a year already. It's time he finds out whether he can shake the rust off, start playing aggressively, and have his knees hold up. Or whether he's done playing football.

It's looking to me like Richter is going to be a starter at LG. It wouldn't shock me if Harris won the RT spot.

Will be interesting to see on Harris, maybe that kind of competition will push Givens this season.

Max tore his ACL on March 3, 2009 (the last time); I'm not sure when he was able to start rehabbing from that one, but I don't think it has been a full year yet.

I think you are right on both accounts. Richter looks like a nordic god among men out there, while Sione just looks too big (in a bad way) and slow to be a RT. With Givens being the archetype of undependable, Harris has a great shot. Dannewitz just doesn't look like the answer either, even though he was getting 1st team RT snaps...

What is the knock on Dannewitz? There really hasn't been much reports of him in camp.

Kasa torched him in pass protection when I was watching, he gets no push in the run game, and just always seems like a liability. Plus, Harris just looks like a NFL type Tackle.

What's the deal with Givens anyway? Did he ever come back from spring break? If we have someone that can replace him, I'd be all for it. I think the key to an OL is consistency, swapping players around every week is just not the key.

So now Adam from Rivals says Givens and Tuoti-Mariner will most likely not be playing the spring game. That news worries me a bit.

Not surprising on Max but certainly surpising (in a bad way) about Givens. Anybody have any info on what happened? Did I miss an injury report or something?

They are making sure that their academics are in order. Max and Bryce should be ok, but they needed to finish this semester strong in the classroom.

BG Brooks has a different take on Dannewitz (although it isn't a glowing endorsement):

In Givens' absence for most of the past week, Hawkins said sophomore Ryan Dannewitz has proved a versatile and able substitute who can play guard or tackle

Anyone who has been watching closer than I have able to give an opinion as to whether or not this will be the year that the OL finally puts it together?
