Spring game draft...

Should be out today. There has already been some stuff posted on the premium boards.

CU should have had the captains draft over the CUbuffs twitter account...

Team captains for Saturday’s spring game have been selected. One team’s captains will be quarterback Tyler Hansen, linebacker B.J. Beatty, center Keenan Stevens and cornerback Jalil Brown. Running backs coach Darian Hagan will coach that team. The other’s captains will be quarterback Cody Hawkins, center Mike Iltis, linebacker Michael Sipili and cornerback Jimmy Smith. Offensive line coach Denver Johnson will coach it. The captains will select the team, and the spring game will be four 10-minute quarters

I am glad that they had the foresight to not allow the quarterback thing to be a problem by putting them on two different teams.

I will ask, though -- do other schools do stuff like this?

We are not the only one doing our spring game this way. They have managed to avoid naming a QB starter and also allowed some of the 1s and 2s to be blurred. Let them show what they can do without the label on Saturday.

are they going to announce the teams ahead of time?

Cody leads the Black team; Tyler the Gold.

After a quick glance, Gold team has the better receivers - Clemons, Simas, Simons, Celestine. OL is hurting on both sides - Miller, Givens and MTM all out. That would seem to favor Gold, with Tyler's ability to escape and more athletic receivers.

I'll hold final judgment until I hear reports, but I think I like this format.

Prince will be calling plays for the Gold Team, Kiesau for the Black. interesting.

edit: assuming the "OC" will be calling the plays.

Kiesau will be calling plays for Black.
Simas is unlikely to play, so the WR are a bit more balanced actually. Tony Clemons was the first overall pick (Gold). Solder was 2nd (Black), followed by Hildreth (Black).
LT position is key to protecting the QB's blindside, so I think that is a very key pick.

QB's will be live - so Hansen scrambling should show itself.
Gold team may have a better pass rush.

I see a couple of guys that have been "#2"s that got shafted on the team selection:

Tyler Ahles, #2 SOLB got picked onto the same team as #1 SOLB BJ Beatty (who was a captain), while Liloa Nobriga ended up on the other squad and presumably a better opportunity to play more.

Same thing for #2 MILB Derrick Webb who ended up on #1 MILB Mike Sipili's team while Doug Rippy isn't behind anyone on his squad.

I like the Gold defense overall, much more experienced and athletic. The biggest weakness is their inexperience at CB but the Black team doesn't have much depth in the WR dept. to take advantage.

The O-lines are pretty even with Black having better tackles and Gold having better guards, give the edge to Black with Solder.

I'll take Gold in this game.

I really like this way of doing the spring game, much better than 1's on 2's hope fully it translates for the folks there.

if it were me, i'd have picked the teams earlier and given a practice to each team to work together as units.....use it to put in the skeleton of your game week prep and organization so you are still meeting some program goals beyond the scrimmage itself.

and a lack thereof in Nabors too?

Yeah. It's no secret that Nabors is a hard worker who is a good mentor to the young guys and a heck of a special teams performer... but he's not a Big 12 tailback. Great Buff and Coloradan, but he is what he is.
