I thought he was pretty candid. Didn't say anything that bothered me.

And I'm probably in the minority on this, but I like that he keeps his message consistent and stays true to his vision. That's what good leaders do. He may fail in 2010. Hell, the past may even indicate that his vision doesn't work and he is destined to fail this year. if that's the case, we move on with a new coaching staff and a new vision. CU will rise to greatness again with the right guy at the helm.

But if we do turn this around and have a good season in 2010, Hawk's consistency of message & vision that has driven us crazy (and we've made fun of) turns into a great asset he can use with his team, his coaches and his recruits... that his vision does work and we're building to a championship.

Finally, I know I'm in the minority right now on this one, but I like Dan Hawkins. I want him to succeed at CU. And I think there are a lot of reasons that this will be a breakout year.

I don't think you are in the minority about wanting Dan Hawkins to succeed...I am right there with you. I simply think there is no chance in hell it will happen, and we have extended the recovery time for the program by not ****-canning him last year.

I don't buy the "... but he's a good guy" aspect of the public image of Dan Hawkins. He is arrogant, condescending, and eccentric to the extreme. This guy truly believes that he knows more about life than the rest of us. He might start by demonstrating that he has even the slightest clue about how to win football games. My biggest problem with Hawkins is that he thinks he deserves a pat on the back for the great job he has done here. Hawkins sincerely thinks that his miserable performances here are to be commended, and that anyone who thinks otherwise just "doesn't get it." He talks about coming to CU to coach like it was some kind of charity case...

he's used the Coach K analogy more than once before. the odds of it "being on the radio this morning" again are pretty slim IMO. if it's "just little things", then maybe veracity ought to be one of them. Instead, he acts like it's just "happenstance" which (however speciously) gives his analogy the force of "realism"...when in fact it's a strategic bend of the truth.

since he's talking about the Butler coach, I'll assume this is a recent interview.

i'd rather win than lose and if we win with Hawk, fine. but i'm tired of the guy. he lost me for good on his Nebraska week radio show when he tried to convince me and the other 8 listeners that somehow because CU wasn't winning games that proved he was a really good coach. it was also the week of the NU game and they only talked about NU the last segment. all the other segments were Hawk talking about his favorite subject: himself and all his "funky" ways of doing things. blah blah blah.

I'm with Nik on this one. I think Coach Hawk is a good guy trying to bring Colorado football back the right way with the right people. He's all about positive reinforcement, keeping one's eye on the goal, working hard, and not giving up. That's who is and he sticks to it. I respect him for that. It may turn out that he's not a good enough football coach to get the job done at Colorado, but I'll still respect him as a man.

All that said, in the end, this is CU and we expect to win games. If Coach Hawk can't get that done, he needs to go.

What would you consider to be a successful year for your team in 2010?
*
Well, I think excellence is always the bar. I think that’s what we always shoot for. We continue to strive toward that. And that’s off the field, that’s in the classroom, and that’s on the field. That’s always the benchmark, and that’s what we always shoot for.

what happened to "as a baseline, beat CSU, beat Nebraska and win our bowl game"?

The whole 10 wins no excuses thing bit him in the ass big time last year. There is no way he is going to say anything that can be taken out of context again.

One question I do have for Nick: you said there were a lot of reasons you thought this would be a breakout year. What are they? I'm not seeing it.

Have you ever met the guy?

He came into my son's place of employment yesterday. He chatted with some folks there. From what I hear, he was as nice as could be. Not arrogant. Not defensive. Not a jerk. Very nice and outgoing. So, why not just judge him on his success as a coach and not our impression of whether or not he is a good guy or a jerk?

In that case, he is a complete and utter failure and kick his ass back to Boise or Davis or wherever the hell he wants to end up. You are right, who cares if he is a nice guy...they finish last.

i've met and known a number of successful coaches over the years at different levels, including major ball. very few of them are guys i would consider "guys i want to have a beer with"... they are driven, opinionated, and domineering, generally as a rule. what i care about is winning.

i don't give a **** if they are good guys by the measure of hanging out or whatever. i want them to deliver winners and do it in a honorable and consistent way.

a lot of folks said gb was arrogant and aloof, but he could be quite charming in person. again, i didn't care about his personality, provided he did his job and kept us out of trouble. it takes a certain personality to do that job well.

hawkins, the person, seems like a ****ing tool to me. and, as a result, he's an easy target. but, i totally believe and acknowledge that if he were winning big, he'd just be eccentric instead of being a tool. i just want results.

a lot of folks didn't like Mac. and, while he's become a saint to us Buff fans over the years, he was heavily criticized for his "lack of adjustments" during games. add in promise keepers and the allegedly unsavory guys he brought in and some other stuff, and he was not universally regarded as the standard by which all should be judged by Buff fans that he is now. but, he won. and he won big.

i don't care what hawkins has to say at this point. he needs to deliver. the facts suggest that he was not prepared for or capable of coaching in the bigs. i base this assertion only on his abysmal results thus far. if he wants to change minds, he needs to PROVE that his system works. i think we are headed for somewhere between 2 and 5 wins this year. but, i'd be thrilled if he proved me wrong and it all somehow finally clicked this season.

I guess I should define "good guy" in context here.

I expect a head coach to be arrogant, driven, and a bit of a know-it-all. That pretty much describes most of the CEOs I know, too.

To me, a coach being a "good guy" means that he doesn't cheat, cares about his coaches and players as people - not just in terms of how he can use them for personal success, and genuinely tries to walk the walk in his own life in terms of the standards of conduct he preaches. Coach Hawk has not let me down in this regard.

It’s just the little things.

Does this guy even listen to himself?

Little things my ass, you incredible douche. STFU and win some damn football games or get the fack out of Boulder.

you've said it more succintly, but illustrated my point perfectly.

you'd love his schtick if he were winning. ou's stoops and uf's urban meyer and 'bama's saban are all ****ing tools. but, we'd all lap it up if hawkins were winning like those guys win.

I truly don't care if he's a nice guy or not. It makes no difference to me. Chuck Fairbanks was an asshole and he lost a lot of football games. Nick Saban is an asshole and he wins a lot of football games. I'd take Nick Saban in a heartbeat over the jackass we have now.

If the "Things" are so stinkin "little" why can't he fix them in four years?

For the record I do think that Hawk is a good guy who at heart truly wants to win and do what is right for his players and the school. He has won at every stop before this so he is not a total loser.

That all said ultimately at this level coaches are not measured by how nice or obnoxious they are, by how much their players like them, by how well they get along with the press. Coaches are measured by how many games they win and by who they win and lose against. Hawk can be the greatest guy in the world but coming off of two straight 3-9 seasons with losses to CSU, Toledo, Montana State, Iowa State, KSU, and getting blown out by huge scores to Missouri a couple of times among other poor performances he has got to win and win a bunch this year.

The problem is that there is no sign that the lack of organization, the lack of a cohesive plan, the lack of direction and sense of purpose by the coaches and the team that have cost so many wins the past four years are still there. Many of the players may love Hawk but this team does not have the singular focus and cohesive drive that will win enough games to save his job.

I wouldn't be surprised if someday Hawk doesn't end up getting another BCS job (after a couple of stops at mid-majors again) and his second time around he may win big. For whatever reason it hasn't worked here and I see no signs that anything significant has changed.

I have HAWKLUST - I can't believe you fool's didn't see his deer in the headlights look 4 years ago. Oh yea he was the hottest young HC around - Koetter built Boise and hawkins rode off his recruits for 4 years.

Thanks for the laughs folks. Has Dan ever taken responsibility for 16-33? Has he ever once said " It's my fault, I need to do a better job?"

No, but hey, who cares about wins and losses, as long as he's a "good guy" in public.......

I hope CU is successful, if Dan is part of it great, but to this point, I can't stand him in anyway.

If staying true means killing a program, I'll take the other.

Never met Hawk. He may be a good guy inperson. In public he comes off as quirky, arrogant and condescending. His internet scum comment is a good example. The following week Zim gave him a golden opportunity to modify his blanket statement that BBS posters were scum of the earth. Hawk avoided it almost entirely. I understand he can get pissed at some of the stuff said on BBS', if I were him I would too. Especially when people criticize him, his son, or even worse, say things about his wife. But he's gotta understand high profile, high dollar jobs have that kind of scrutiny, fair or unfair, attached. You can't lash out at a large section of your fanbase because you got your feelings hurt.

I was still in Hawk's corner up until ISU this year. IMO, he can't cut it where it counts: W's and L's. Yes he won at Boise and Willamette. I don't know about Willamette, but he basically got the keys to a Ferrari Nutt and Koetter built, and manged not to wrap it around a tree.

He's been a flop at CU. He went from, "I want to win now", "Either you are trying to win a NC or you aren't" to "Boy, we hit it out of the park on our GPA this semester", "We were just 10 plays from a bowl game (in other words a .500 record)" in four years. It amazes me how coaches talk about winning at the beginning, then when they can't, morph into the most expensive study hall monitors and life coaches on the planet. IMO, it's a method to try and find some success that they can justify their salaries when they are failing at the most obvious goal of a FB coach.

If Hawk wins fine, I'm glad for CU, but I'm ready for him to go.

Sorry Buffnik, Talkins inconsistancies with the way he coaches, deals with the fanbase, deals with the alum, & press, IMO is the straw that broke the camels back. Yes, he has done a 180 this year with the way he responds to the fans, alum, and press, but I believe his coaching abilities will come to light again before all the NC games are done. Talkins has done nothing to walk the walk since he's been here, it's all been talk, talk, talk. I'll stand in line to help hold the door open for him when he's fired. As Sacky said, STFU and WIN!!!

OK now that I'm done surger coating it, let me tell you how I really feel. --------------------------------

Hawk has become kind of a charicature. His "Hawkisms" have set him up as an easy target. Liver is right. If he were winning, we'd all just laugh at the things he says and call him a "great guy." But because of his record, he riles people up even more than usual. Just like the rest of you say, he'd better win this year. That is all that matters.

If that was the case, he should have been fired last year DBT. I think part of the reason he is still around is that he is a pretty decent guy. But as a coach, right now at CU, he does not have a lot to stand on. Not much good anyway.
