Tad Boyle

Probably because he coaches at a small school so most assume it wouldn't translate into success in the Big XII.

I'd have no problem with him. He obviously has ability to coach. McClain and Dunlap probably are better known on the recruiting circuit since they've both been recruiting nationally and Boyle more locally.

Boyle coached at U of Oregon, Tennessee and Wichit State when it was top nonBCS team. He played for Larry Brown. He has as much national experience as McClain or Dunlap IMO.

Mostly just because I'm not as familiar with him as the other two leading candidates. But how serious do we look as a basketball program if we're looking to replace the guy who we got from Air Force with the current head coach at Northern Colorado, the former head coach of MSCD and the former head coach of Wyoming? All successful at those places, but it looks so much like a regional search it's hard for the rest of the nation who by some miracle hears news about this to take us seriously. At least show we're considering the best fit for the program out of the number of talented head coaches and top assistants across the country, not just ones with ties to our area.

I believe we have 3 very strong candidates. You'll get no complaints from me if Boyle gets the job.

who was the HC at Tennessee when Boyle was there? Jerry Green?

i think we've got 3 decent candidates. what worries me is the continual regionalism. doesn't seem like the St. Mary's guy is getting much play....for a guy who was just in the Elite Eight a month ago.

Shows you what I know. Anyway, I'd probably rate 'em Dunap, Boyle, McClain. I could live either of the three.

Agreed, doesn't seem like MB is venturing very far from home with the coaching search. These are all good, solid candidates, but let's not restrict ourselves to regional candidates. Also, St. Mary's only reached the Sweet 16, but your point is still there.

There may be one other candidate than the three mentioned publicly.

Gotta go hard at Bennett.. He's by far the best candidate in my mind.. He is winning at St. Mary's.. Again I repeat, he is winning at St. Mary's.. The guy knows how to build a program..

I agree that we should interview Bennett, but I think the other three that have all been interviewed have compelling arguments too. Tad Boyle is winning at Northern Colorado, a team that has been a Division 1 school all of four or five years now. He knows a thing or two about building a program too.

Bennett will be a bust. What's St. Mary's record against top 25 teams during his tenure?

Did you see the game vs. Baylor? The also lost to USC and Portland. Recruiting 2nd rate Australian players may work in the WCC but it's not going to work in the big 12.

Yeah I'm cool with Boyle too.. I think Bennett's resume is a little better though. Not high on Dunlap (if this guy is so great how come no one has hired him yet at Div 1?) or McClain (mediocre Wyoming coach)

So he didn't have 3 NBA pros on his team like Baylor does.. That's your argument against his candidacy? CU would be throwing parades if they had a coach get their basketball team to the Sweet 16..

Boyle has some positives with his good recruiting history and has good ties with the local prep coaches, although I don't see the latter as being that big of an advantage. Yes he has turned UNC completely around in 4 years, but he's only had one winning season up there. One.

Hmmm - not sure about this hire. I would have preferred Dunlap or McClain... but I don't know much about basketball, so I probably don't know wtf im talking about

my problems:

- coached at a small school
- lots of victories against terrible schools
- couldn't even win his own ****ty conference
- is he a proven recruiter???

This hire is all about potential. eek.

I don't agree. I think any of the three candidates would have been given the task of taking the momentum that has been generated and build on it. I think the expectation for next years' team remains pretty much the same as it was before Bzdelik left. This is a team that is knocking on the door of the big dance. I think anything less than a deep run in the NIT would be a disappointment next year.

I'll add two more of immediate worry:
- Does McClain stay as an assistant?
- Does this change our roster for next year, specifically does Burks stay after he said that he preferred McClain?

One article said he's already met with the team... so hopefully everyone is on-board

I don't know why, but when I saw the article on the front page here I definitely felt some upsetness. I can't really put my finger on it but Boyle is the only one of the three candidates I had some misgivings about. I don't like this. I can't really explain why but it just doesn't feel right.
