Interesting post on the Big 12 beginnings

Not finished reading, but the author omits us entirely with

All of the Big Eight schools were in the Central Time Zone. The most distant school from Austin was Iowa State, 840 miles away.

Frustrating to see just how much UT ****ed us in the ass. Looks like NU had it right all along and I *hate* saying that. @)*$#

probably just doesn't know his head from his behind rather than omission.

regardless, we need to get far far away from UT's sphere of influence.

so the article got me thinking about expansion and I did a trademark search for a few terms like "Super 14 Conference, Super 16 Conference, Big 14 Conference, Big 16 Conference" to see if the Big 10 OR Big 12 had reserved the trademark and all came up unregistered and this came up:

Big 14

(APPLICANT) The Big Twelve Conference, Inc. CORPORATION DELAWARE 400 East John Carpenter Freeway Irving TEXAS 75062
Filing Date: February 6, 2009

Interesting, I would have thought the address for the Big 12 would have read:

c/o DeLoss Dodd's Pool Cabana Boy,
Dan Beebe
40 Acres
Austin, TX

What exactly has UT done that has hurt CU? The academic qualifier issue was something that CU was pushing for in the Big 8 but did not have enough clout. The limiting of partial qualifiers actually helped level the playing field for CU. Academically CU and UT are more closely aligned than the other Big 12 schools. Probably the most controversial issue is revenue sharing in the Big 12 but CU would probably side with UT on that issue also since we get rewarded more for playing tough teams on National TV (personally I think equal revenue sharing makes the conference stronger).

I would like to hear why people think Texas is hurting CU?

They almost killed Joel Klatt...does that count?

I'm lukewarm on this issue, but will play devil's advocate and respond to your query.

Unfortunately, CU has to play national powers in order to realize greater revenue under the B12 current policy, but Texas does not. They likely have almost every one of their games televised every year, and it hasn't done much to improve their scheduling--since OSU beat them in Austin they have avoided any tough OOC opponents. As is set up now, the rich get richer and the gap continues to widen, as opposed to the Big 10, for example.

Another thing that pisses me off is the fact that the B12 championship is almost always played in Texas. While that is not really a concern for buff fans as of late, it was essentially a home game for UT and OU in the championship games the buffs did play in. Invesco is a state-of-the-art facility, and should be included in the rotation.

And finally, I am jealous of all their posessions.

I wonder if Denver has made any bids to host the Big 12 championship game. Has Denver ever hosted the Big 12 basketball championships, either? It would seem that would be a reasonable venue for a game, too.

But -- truth be told, the Big 12 conference has played 14 football conference championship games. 7 have been played in Texas. 7 have been played in Missouri.

Yes they made one bid several years ago right after Invesco was opened. CU teamed with the Stadium management company to make the bid. It was decided after that effort that location and weather worked against that Venue. No bid for the BB tournament that I know of...it would have to be at the Pepsi Center and after the MWC tourney failed there I don't think they want to go through that again.

The power structure of the B12 has shifted with the inclusion of Texas.
Yes, Texas has brought wealth and legitimacy to the conference.
Also during that time, the conference has become UT and the 11 dwarfs.

The longhorns prosperity can't be matched. No one else in the conference brings in $120M revenue, which is almost 50% more than their closest rivals OU and Corn, and 3 times the amount of the rest. No one else has a stadium that sells out 105,000 seats and gets 7 home games. No none else has a Godzillatron HD video board. The embarassment of riches equates to more NCAA teams, higher coaching salaries, and the resulting ability to recruit better athletes. As a result, no one else in the conference has a >90% home winning record over the past 8 years.

It's not the fault of Texas that they have their act together. But the conference arms race has been won. No number of Boone Pickins can change that.

CU took it in the ass because the administration allowed UT to run the conference. 11-1? The Corn were the only ones that voted against those measures? Even KjSU?

Even revenue sharing is probably OU/Aggy/UT/NU against and everyone else for. My problem was that they came into OUR conference and dictated terms to us. The CU AD allowed it too. The lack of leadership and foresight from the old Big 8 schools hurt the conference as a whole today, where OU and UT are perched at the top and everyone else is playing catchup in a game where you really can't.

Mac knew that raising academic standards would hurt and when they started making it harder for him to get his guys in, well, he bolted before it went down. Yeah, there were other personal issues he was dealing with, but that was a factor as well.

What would have been UTs option had we not formed with them? The SEC? Laugh. The Pac10, maybe, but Stanford probably would have vetoed them down. They would have been screwed. The Big 8 ADs only saw the possibilities of what could happen, not what was to. I'm not saying that UT shouldn't have been allowed to have come into the conference, just that the Big 8 was strong at that point. There's no way those same old 8 teams will ever have that much sway in the conference again. I'd like to know if any OU alums cherish the Big 8 days, but I doubt it and OU would be the strongest component within that group. Instead, they are in the South's division and are only relegated to play the likes of us (old Big 8 schools) a few times a year. Instead, they play a lot more in Texas and can therefore snag more recruits. Ugh.

Letting in TT and Baylor was the tipping point, imo, because everything fell from there. Recruits could stay home and play for a big conference. No matter what anyone says, the SWC was pure **** at that time. Pure ****ing ****. Even though UT will always be the flagship state of Texas it would have been easier for any of the old Big 8 schools to snag guys from there had they not said "no TT or no Baylor means no Aggy and no UT."

Disgusting.
