Mizzou to Big 10 in June

I think I've said a couple of times that I always put question marks behind my expansion posts because I simply have no clue what will happen. Well, with this tidbit, I think I feel secure enough to not post a ? mark. I have a couple of good friends in the media down this way and they and their sources and contacts around Columbia say that Mizzou to the Big 10 is basically done and will be likely as early as next month. I believe the Big 12 has a meeting in early June as well, so that would make sense.

As for NU? I don't have any solid info on them, but it's apparent they are pissed at the Texa-fication of the league and are ready for something new.

I think, at this point, you can go ahead and assume that one or both are bolting the Big 12.

I realize these expansion threads can be taken with a giant block of salt, but this is one piece I feel comfortable in putting myself out there on. I'm fully convinced at this point we'll go into league play in 2010 with Mizzou for sure leaving and NU likely not far behind. Obviously, with how Mizzou has shown its tail on this issue, they're already out the door mentally. They've probably burned so many bridges with the Big 12 that they'd go Coyote Ugly and bolt to CUSA at this point.

I realize CU might have already accepted a Pac-10 invite and that they don't want to be the FIRST school to break up the conference, but within a week of whenever Mizzou makes its announcement, CU needs to bolt. I think June and July will have wave after wave of insane conference shifting news, so Bohn and the school better be ready to act. The Big 12 is about to be ripped apart and I doubt CU fans would like being in the MWC very much. That's where we'll end up if we don't act with force.

I cannot wait for June...besides getting the preseason mags...this has been an unusual offseason.

I read on Sporting News that Boise State is set to accept an invite to the MWC next month too. Gives me an excuse to go to Ft. Collins and root against the Lambs.

Yeah, I agree. I know rumors of conference shifts have popped up over the years, but most sprout up quick and are dispatched just as quickly. This time around, there are rumors upon rumors and it seems media outlets know *JUST* enough that they're willing to jump off a ledge and "be first" with news of an expansion. It's apparent to me, at this point, that the Big Ten and Nebraska/Mizzou have agreed behind closed doors to make the jump. There's just too much smoke and too much open acceptance of said smoke. Missouri has wanted in the Big Ten for decades, but it's only now that they're so bold and brazen to effectively burn bridges with a league they've had ties with for 85 years. Then there's Nebraska, and good ol' Dr. Tom is out in front talking to media about this. I'm sorry, but there's just too many big names mentioning stuff when they would normally be quiet.

I think the Big 10 will make these two announcements first, then add we have the SEC make a move and then CU to the Pac-10 after that. (I believe the Big 10 and Pac-10 are in on this together and timing their announcements so that the BT goes first, then the Pac goes after that. I believe the Big 12 will be defunct within five years.

It seems like the SEC will be #2 behind the Big 11. Even if the Big 11 goes to only 14 teams, the SEC could easily go to 16 teams. I'm having a hard time envisioning the SEC going to just 14 teams. From there, it will be just the Big 11 and the SEC and everyone else. That might not give the Pac-10 that much incentive to expand especially if the Pac-10 pairs up with the ACC instead of the Big 12 in a joint television network. If that happens, CU is going to be part of what will be a glorified MWC along with Texas Tech because the Red Raiders used to be in a conference with some of the MWC schools in the Border States conference which included Arizona and Arizona State at the time before the creation of the WAC. That might end up being a good situation because the MWC would just get the Big 12's automatic BCS qualifer unless the Big 12 absorbs the MWC and renames itself.

CU would be able to go to San Diego State and UNLV and if the MWC adds Frenso State along with Boise State, that could be three West Coast trips to take the sting off being ignored by the Pac-10. That might end up being a very good thing for CU if the MWC gets the BCS auto bid OR THE BIG 12'S BCS BID.

(EDIT)

(EDIT)

The Pac-10 still has the creation of a championship game as incentive to bring in 2 teams, not to mention additional markets for the AccPac network if that's the direction they choose to go. And, barring some kind of miracle that lands UT and aTm in the Pac-12, CU is still the best expansion candidate they've got.

If conference expansion starts to pop, I really, really don't see the Pac-10 just standing pat...

A road trip to Fresno would not lessen the sting of getting f**ked by the Pac 10 one bit. Fresno is an awful, awful place.

If Mizzou bolts for the P-10 & kNU leaves for the B-10 I would think that would trash the P-10's plan of having a joint TV contract with what would become the B-10/B-11? Even if Mizzou & kNU were to be replaced by two other schools, those schools would not carry the same kind of clout, following, and TV market that kNU & Mizzou would leave in their wake. Certainly plans B & C are in place in the P-10 for any kind of scenerio that may threaten their ultimate goal, be that a TV contract or expansion.

Bohn better not be going to Hawaii this June or July. Going there last November didn't work out so well.

I would assume that even if Mizzou left the conference, they would still be obligated to play all their Big 12 conference games this year??

Yes. any "invitations" would be for at least one to two years in advance.

Remember Penn State taking something like 3 years to actually play in the Big Ten after they were invited, and they were an independent!

Good thing we don't play out there until 2011...hopefully, everything will be done, we'll be in the Pac 12, and the Buffs can finally go to the islands without worrying about being f***ed over by the admini-dorks.

DeLoss Dodds contract extension talks still HUGE news down here (UT land). Everybody has been taken by surprise with that move. General consensus seems to be UT is scrambling to keep the Big 12 together, past that they have no idea what to do. Some talk about looking west toward the Pac, but not a lot. SEC would be preferable to them, but when you take into potential for market growth, SEC doesn't seem to be a good choice (sez talking heads.) I get the definite feeling these guys are really going to work towards establishing their own network, that seems to be primary move at this point.

Is being the "first to leave" the Big XII a bad thing? I disagree. Good on Mizzou if they are. They are taking a stand and fighting for a better future for themselves. I would love it if CU strikes first. It will show everyone that we were terribly unhappy being in the Texas conference, and we are off to greener pastures, thank you. Obviously, we are not the only unhappy ones. But for whatever reason, the Pac 10 is content to play second fiddle.

It is exciting to be the linchpin in expansion talks in the two western-most time zones.

Do we know the general sentiment among Mizzou fans? Some CU traditionalists have been opposed to leaving the conference due to historical ties and rivalries, etc. But I don't get that vibe from Mizzou a whole lot. Perhaps they've always sat on the geographic/cultural line between the Big 8 and the Big 10, that they feel a kinship already to their new conference. Similarly, I have always felt that CU is on the geographic/cultural line between the Big 8 and Pac 10... and leaning more towards the Pac side.

Besides MU vs KU...I think that MU is much more of a bug10 team and they will fit very well with them.

I agree that it wouldn't lesson the sting, but having spent more time in Fresno recently I now know that it is not nearly as bad as I once thought. There actually ARE nice areas of Fresneck and it's awfully close to Kings Canyon/Sequoia national parks.

I have friends in both KC and St. Louis and just about all of the Mizzou people they know are excited about a possible move. Other than KU and NU, they don't really feel a connection with the other conference schools. The Mizzou people I know personally are great with the move. Basically, I just think it's a combination of history (they've wanted in the Big 10 for years and have always felt more like a Big 10 school culturally and academically) and the weird stuff that's happened to them recently in the Big 12 (losing Orange Bowl to KU, etc.).

It's pretty obvious Mizzou is gone at this point. Wait a few weeks for them to bolt and hopefully CU will do the same a week or two later. The Pac is waiting on us, I think.

You won't want to wade through this whole thing, but this is basically a St Louis Cardinals board, about equal numbers of Missouri/Illinois fans. Most of the Missouri fans enthusiastically endorse the idea of moving to the Big 10, for some of the same reasons Buffs fans want to go to the PAC: Texas domination, etc. They also feel that the league hosed them badly a few years ago when they sent Kansas (coming off a loss to Missouri) to the Orange Bowl.

How do they feel the conference hosed them when the Orange Bowl is one who picked KU instead of Misery?

You'd probably be better off asking a Missouri fan rather than someone who commented on their thinking. There is plenty of it in the thread I linked to. OKCBuff also said the same thing a couple posts above this one, but I believe the general line of thinking is that the conference did not fight for them.

The ACC signed a new big TV contract...that means the Pac 10-Big 12 joint network or joint TV deal is still on the table.

I am beginning to believe that the Pac-10 and Big 12 might be working together on a peaceful transfer of CU to the Pac-10 and in this situation, the Pac-10 would take Utah while the Big 12 takes BYU. This is where the Big 12 waives CU's exit fee and sticks it to MU and NU for going to the Big 10. Louisville and Memphis would replace MU and NU and that is where the Big 12 could really cash in...seriously.

Very interesting, Nash. BYU, Memphis and Louisville would be the absolute best-case scenario for the Big XII's survival. But then again, if CU is gone, what do we care?

I dunno, not real thrilled about having to throw academics out the window if the Big 12 has to expand (though it wouldn't really effect us if we move the PAC 12). BYU has solid academics, though they aren't a research school and their history on academic and personal freedom is...spotty. Louisville is okay I guess though certainly not an equivalent replacement for an AAU school. Memphis is a TIER 4 school, what does that take for admissions requirements... a pulse? We already complain about the having to compete against the admission standards of KjucoSU. Maybe this isn't a concern if we're out of the conference, but would it make sense for Texas to keep rebuffing the SEC based on academics in that league?

Texas will do or say anything they need to do or say to ensure they stay top dog in whatever conference they're in to keep their $$$$ rolling in.

They can tout academics all they want, but when the cards are on the table, they'll sell their soul down the river.

I hear you on the academics part. Sadly, that issue seems secondary to the revenue derived from sports.

But let's say the Big XII did go the academic route. BYU would be sufficient enough, at least better than half the conference already. Then you are somewhat limited... Rice, Tulane, SMU, Tulsa? Unfortunately, those schools don't have large enough $ potential to make it worthwhile.
