B12 Meetings in KC

Beebe doesn't sound very comfortable in this article and it also sounds like it's only going to get worse for him. As the meetings drag on I expect a certain amount of of the discussions to remain secret to the very end. This will certainly garner alot of attention and even more discussion on this board. Even if the B12 were to stay put, I'm wondering if Beebe will be able to keep his job when this is over? He's pissed off alot of people.

If we stay in the Big 12 I am kind of worried he is the guy negotiating our TV contract now

There isn't a lot he can say right now. He is stuck in a position similar to someone watching a car wreck develop and not being able to do anything about it. Even with a new TV contract the Big XII isn't going to be able to offer the same kind of money as the Big X or even the SEC. If the Big XII stays essentially together the north schools are still stuck with a Texas dominated conference in the meeting rooms, if Texas leaves then the Big XII loses a huge chunk of TV value and comparative revenue goes down further.

For Mizzou, the Big X makes a lot of sense financially and otherwise, probably the same can be said for Nebraska. I love Big XII football but all things considered CU is a much better fit in the PAC 10. Texas and OU both seem like a better fit in the SEC and the SEC would benefit from having them even if it means dragging aTm along for the ride.

Bottom line is that Beebe is in a position that makes it impossible to stop his conference from falling apart if other conferences come calling but he is still in a position where he has to act like and say the right things about the Big XII.

Essentially, he's screwed.

If I were him, I would begin discussions for the media package sooner than later. If he could go to the members and tell them that the Big XII package will rival the other conferences if the Big XII stays in tact, then, maybe, he could convince everyone to stay put. But it sounds like he is going to be reactive instead of proactive. He is waiting to see what the schools do first rather than the other way around.

He may not have much of a choice, if you were a media executive are you going to sign a deal with a conference that may be losing it's top national ratings draws. I want to know who is going to be a part of the deal before I sign on. If Texas goes you lose the biggest media markets in the deal. Even if Baylor and TT stay in the conference UT dominates in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, etc.. Lose Mizzou and you lose St. Louis and KC, lose CU and you lose the Denver market. After this there is not a lot left to hang you hat on to justify a big money deal.

Boy, reading that story I get the feeling that Bebee is leading the band on the Titanic -- he's just going to play even as the ship sinks.

Beebe is coming off as reactive, not proactive.
If he were proactive, he'd have a more satisfying plan than demanding to know who is on or off the plane.

The problem with the Big 12 isn't that it's young. The real issue is that the B12 has a collection of "me-first" members who have a love-hate relationship with the state of Texas.

For the B12 to earn a television contract on par with the SEC and B10, then television sets in the country's second most populated state is essential. But the Lone Star State hasn't exactly endeared themselves with fellow B12 fans in NeMoKaCoOk. Texas lords over the conference, and is genetically unable to comprehend the concept that the conference is only as strong as it's weakest member. It's hard to enjoy B12 membership when the trend is towards UT and the eleven dwarfs. The B12 HQ is Dallas based, and looks to cement Jerryworld as the permanent location of the CCG. The Houston Bowl, Alamo Bowl and Cotton Bowl all have tie-ins with the B12, and are all in Texas. Meanwhile Denver, KC, St Louis OKC, and Omaha are left sucking the hind tit of the B12. There comes a point when it's just easier to look towards Chicago and the upper Midwest or to the Left Coast than to trust the 24M Texas chest thumpers to negotiate in your best interest.

I'd be alot happier with Beebe if he were on the offensive, making inroads into the CA or Chicago or Florida markets to help dilute the self serving Texas power brokers.

If he were proactive he'd add Utah and BYU yesterday. OR Louisville/Memphis. He's a fool and not proactive and barely reactive.

But this is what happens when you take a guy out of the Ohio Valley Conference.

Dan Beebe = Dan Hawkins of Conf. commissioners?
