Colorado AD: CU on verge of Pac-10 invite

Posted on: June 3, 2010 8:33 pm

The dominoes are beginning to fall.

The Boulder Daily Camera has reported that Colorado AD Mike Bohn believes this his school will be among six Big 12 schools to get an invitation to the Pac-10 this weekend.

Bohn added that a Thursday report on Orangebloods.com appears to have some "validity" to it. The reported stated that Colorado, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Texas and Texas A&M would be invited to the Pac-10, essentially ending the Big 12 Conference. The new 16-team Pac-10. the report added, when then start its own network paying members $20 million per year.

I reported earlier that Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott did not deny the report. Pac-10 meetings begin Friday in San Francisco.

I'm so pumped. Hooray for getting one of the golden tickets.

sorry to say it, but these are not the big 12 teams i want joining the pac 10. didn't we all agree texas just bullies the b12 and they'll do the same where ever they end up going after the b12 ceases to exist? I'm no fan of any of those texas schools. They're completely going to change the dynamic of the pac 10, and it would seem we'll be in the division with all the renegade big 12 teams. gee, that'll be fun. i'd rather see just us and a Utah join the pac 10. ****. i seriously hope this isn't how it will really go down.

Me too. I don't really want to be in the Big 12 South portion of the PAC10 either. That said, if we don't go, we're pretty much screwed. I'm kinda hoping that some of the teams turn down the offer and we get some sort of pac 10 division that allows us to play more games against traditional pac 10 teams.

Another downside of such a huge conference is that non conference games will suffer. There is no way we (or anyone else) schedules the likes of Cal or UGA if we've got the possibility of such a ridiculous conference schedule.

Better to be "IN" than "OUT" no matter what else Texas does. The MWC would breathe a huge sigh of relief and begin targeting the "leftovers" of the Big 12.

I still fail to see how any conference would pass up Kansas. Maybe the Big Ten will scoop up Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Rutgers, and one other school?

The only drawback is that the Pac-10 uses a "hybrid" revenue sharing with 60% of the TV money going to the schools making the appearance. (The Big 12 was 50%). I imagine Texas and OU will still favor that model. If this ended up being equal shares in TV money and network ownership then we couldn't have asked for a better situation.

Sure we will be "stuck" with Texas, but having access to Cali/Texas recruiting directly (with Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, etc would NOT have) is pretty damn awesome.

Hopefully this will truly kill the Big 12 and no exit fees will be owed either.

Whats the possibilty of some of those teams turning the invite from the P-10 down as CU once did? I can't imagine all of those schools would be chomping at the bit to join.

I'm pretty sure if the Pac-10 guarantees their TV revenue will be $20 million per team that they'll all accept.

not the change i wanted the most, but if this is what is going to happen....better to be along for the ride than in the new MWC or Missouri Valley mashup with KSU, ISU et al.

Guess so, Scotty. I was just in Lubbock last weekend -- their campus is nice, but the town is a pit.

Not sure.. It all depends on Texas probably.. If they tell the other South teams they are staying in the Big 12, I don't think OU, A&M, TTech Okie State will leave... Without Texas, I'm not sure the Pac 10 wants the Ttech's and Okie State's of the world.

So does this make Texas Tech our new "rival"?

This is the astro-turf of rivalries; completely fabricated.

The Sand Aggies are blinded by their historical hate for A&M, and for being in the long shadow of the 'horns. TT has got no hate left in the tank to direct towards anyone else.

The TT fans are my favorite from the South. I just don't see a TT/CU matchup ever getting heated.

the updated version of the orangebloods rivals article intimates that UT will go Pac and the SEC is courting OU and ATM, which are said to be leaning that way (says the article). UT is taking the academics high road to the Pac.

Interesting.. I got to think the Pac 10 would want OU with Texas in this scenario if their goal is to go to 16.. You want to add some flagship programs.. OU and Texas would be huge gets..

If I was the Pac 10 and I was going to 16, I would offer CU, OU, Texas, Kansas, Utah and take your pick with TTech and Okie State (although I would offer Nebraska in this spot but it doesn't seem like they want to be in a conference with teams from the South).. I think A$M is an SEC type of school..

I hope to god that TT and A&M are included just to pacify the texas politicos so UT can get in. However, equal revenue sharing should be a goddamn requirement.

most recent orangebloods also states there is no legislative impetus that UT and ATM stay together....which i thought was interesting since it was a working assumption everywhere that they were a package deal.

"Surprisingly, the Legislature doesn't appear to be an obstacle for the state's two biggest schools to split off into separate conferences, although that is not an ideal situation for either school. If A&M opted to head to the SEC and Texas opted to go elsewhere, there is a very good chance Texas would no longer play the Aggies in any sports."

also, interesting in the ATM blurb....the Ag AD is 16 mil in debt.

The real prize in the whole thing is obviously Texas. Get them and you get pretty much every relevant TV market in the state. I wonder how much different the TV payout per school would be if the Pac 10 just added Texas and CU(or another school that could deliver a major TV market like Denver not in Texas).

:wtf: Then why are TT and A&M possibly in the picture? To lessen travel costs for the eastern schools? To increase the Texas footprint? I can see A&M being a good idea there, but ****ing TT?

Tech is a mystery to me, too. I don't know what they bring to the table....esp after Leach and Dad Knight are no longer there. They certainly seem to fall outside the "academic" qualifications the Pac has been vocal about.....along with middle of the pack sports. i don't see what the deal-maker is for Tech.

Invite as many Big 12 schools as possible in order to remove the obstacle of the "Exit Fee". Like others have said, If enough teams leave the fee goes away.

I would rather have Utah like many others but...

Another vote to counter the California block on important conference votes.

Didn't necessarily mean "hated" rivalry, just that would be who we play on "rivalry week".

This. It's all about preservation right now and none of those schools will turn down the safe harbor.

To quote a great philosopher, "We'll see".... I suspect the schools with leverage in that group (UT, OU and to a lesser expense aTm) will take that offer and go shopping for a new conference home. First stop, SEC headquarters. If they can get better $$ from the SEC, they'll go there. Although UT might try to lead them to Pac-16 country if the $$ are close, if the talk about them liking the akademek fit there better is true.

I think the safest thing to bet is that the Big XII as we know it dies the day those letters are mailed. It's going to be interesting to see what happens to the leftovers - KU, KjSU, ISU and Baylor. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they don't try to work something out with some of the better C-USA schools (Memphis, for example) and maybe some western Big East schools (Louisville and Cincy might start looking around if Rutgers and Syracuse split for the Big CLXXVIII or whatever that conference ends up being....

Interesting how Stanford shot down UT's efforts to get a Pac invite in the 90s, yet UT is the shining academic pearl in this proposed 6-pack. Hmm, someone is sacrificing standards in favor of the almighty dollar.

according to the DMN, the reason Texas Tech is in instead of Kansas is because politically it might not be feasible for KU to leave its brother KjSU..
