It's all about Nebraska

Remember the good ole days when we had pull like this? Either stay where we were and help make the Big 12 conference, or go to the PAC 10. The fuskers didn't have a say and kicked and screamed at all this. God I miss those days.

Pac 10 was going to offer only CU without Texas coming? I find that hard to believe.. It was my understanding it was a package deal..

I have to admit I'm amused by Nebraska's anger towards Texas supposedly controlling everything. Wait until they get into the Big 10 where Michigan and Ohio State run everything..

I am not so sure, I think if the PAC 10 offers CU goes, if Texas doesn't go CU still gets the offer. Either way I think we are gone.

You're probably right, I just meant back then we had options because we were actually good in football. Nebraska didn't want the Big 12 from what I remember, but they didn't have much choice.

I think Nebraska didn't like that the Big 12 put a limit on partial qualifiers, the league's first commissioner (I believe he was a SWC guy), not playing OU every year and the Big 12 office being located in Dallas.. In defense of Nebraska, I do think there was some resentment among the other big 8 schools since they had just dominated the Big 8 the last 4 years and college football and they did agree with the Texas model of limiting partial qualifiers and the other stuff that Nebraska didn't like (although I'm sure no one would have stepped in the way of Neb playing OU every year but I'm just guessing OU didn't care to play them anymore since they were losing 77-0 to them).. I don't think there arguments hold much water anymore though.. For example Dallas is by far the best place for the Big 12 Championship game since its the easiest to get to by plane and it is a superior facility to that dump hole in St. Louis or Kansas City..

OU would have never ducked the fuskers. Their rival is Texas and it always has been. The resentment from Lincoln still exists.

If it really is up to Nebraska, then this conference is toast. Remember Dr. Tom hated the idea of inviting the Texass schools to bein with. If he has the opportunity to blow up the conference, he'll do it.

Let's look at it this way. UT is the blonde bombshell while NU is the midwestern hick woman and those two are fighting for OU's affection. OU sees that NU will be always loyal but with UT, the grass is greener. I'm sure OKCBuff will agree with me and that is that OU fans generally no longer see NU as a rival these days because either NU or OU hasn't been great at the time and in the 14 years of the Big 12, there only has been a few good NU-OU games and that rivalry is not quite where it used to be so it's dead.

As for CU, I have to say that for CU's best interests, we need to pull an OU on NU and go with the Texas gang.

Why yes, yes I will agree! ;)

But seriously... OU fans don't even talk about Nebraska anymore. The ONLY reason that was a rivalry was because they were the big dogs in the Big Eight and they were both huge programs. If either of those teams weren't elite in the 70s and 80s, OU-NU would have just been another game. Don't get me wrong, when the Big 12 first came together, OU fans whined about not getting NU every year. But by about 2001, no one down here really cared. OU-Texas has always been a big thing for Sooner fans, but once that became a conference game, the series EXPLODED. Guys, it's just an insane series. Especially now with both teams being elite again. OU fans don't even think twice about the Huskers. NU is jealous that UT stole their woman -- period. Oh sure, when OU-NU pops up on the schedule every couple of years, the local TV stations in OKC will do packages about the good ol' days or Dr. Tom and the Bootlegger's Boy patting each other on the back, but after that week has passed, it disappears again.

At this point, OU doesn't give a crap about NU and they won't miss playing them. I'm sure they'd schedule them for a home-and-home once a decade, but that's about it. The series doesn't matter down here now.

I think the Big 12 stays in place if Nebraska stays. Otherwise, it's over. I don't think CU would get offered to go to the PAC 10 without Texas and, if Nebraska stays, Texas won't leave.

this plus beebe's quote today makes me feel kinda uneasy... like this thing might blow up... i have no substantive reason for this... i just have a gut feeling something will go wrong... either staying in the big 12 or tejas goes to the big 11 and we die with the rest of the big12

Heard a little discussion of this on Fox Sports Radio tonight - their show with Petros Papadumbass and whoever the douche is that does the show with him. Anyway, Petros was talking about the 6 Big XII teams getting invites, and Bohn (he pronounced it "Bahn") coming out and basically confirming the report. His comment was that, while UT is the big dog in this deal, he had been telling people CU would be included in any Pac-10 expansion. "The Pac-10 wants Colorado" according to him. Doing the number of Pac-10 games he does, and with his U$C ties, I suspect he's probably had some reasonably good connections on this whole deal...

Yeah I don't get the people thinking CU won't get an invite if UT doesn't want to go. So you think the Pac 10 will go from the most aggressive move in college football to doing nothing? Doesn't make any sense. The Pac is still going to need to expand to hope to keep up and stay remotely relevant after the scare they have put into the Big 10/SEC and the inevitable response if UT falls through.

If the B12 stays together and renegotiates their TV deal, CU might go from $8M to as much as $14M. It's foreseeable that a Texas TV network would be established that perpetuate disparity between the south teams. UT might still stand to make $18-20M per year by staying put. The opportunity cost for Texas to join the 16PAC might not be all that great. They give up being the big shooter over some flyover states to join with the California gang bosses in plan of tormenting the Big10 and SEC.

Example of economics

school.......Stay put........Conf Blowup
BU.............+$5M...........(-$2M)
CU.............+$4M..........+$12M. PAC
ISU............+$4M...........(-$3M)
KU.............+$4M...........(-$2M)
KSU...........+$4M...........(-$2M)
MIZZOU......+$4M.........+$10M. Big10
NU.............+$5M..........+$10M. Big10
OU.............+$6M..........+$9M. Pac
OSU...........+$5M..........+$11M. Pac
TAMU.........+$6M..........+$9M. Pac
TTU............+$6M..........+$9M. Pac
UT..............+$8M..........+$9M. Pac
Net...........+$61M..........+$70M.

These numbers are illustrative guestimates and any one could be +/- a few million. Basically NU can piss off it's neighbors to the East and South in exchange for $5M/yr and a chance to be an outpost attempting to stand amongst the storied and venerable institutions of PSU, Mich, tOSU. Or they could remain in their role as chief dwarf of the north. The key to this decission is the seriousness of the B10 to offer a warm and lucrative embrace. Otherwise, the B12 bird in the hand is better than what the B10 is hiding in their bush.

I think the real beef now is that Nebraska wants a Big 12 TV network, but Texas won't agree to it becuase it wants it's own Bevo station. That's where teh sticking point appears to be now.

Would be interesting if Nebraska, OU and Texas stay put in the Big 12 and the PAC 10 still invites CU. Maybe then is when the PAC 10 invites just CU and Utah. There's just no way the PAC 10 takes Texas Tech and OSU without Texas.

It's quite possible that UT offers NU a sweatheart deal to keep the B12 from blowing up. The deal will stink if the lowest earning school makes >20% less than the highest paid institution. And this is a scenario that is all too likely given the current state of affairs.

Texas gets to be at it's bully best by keeping the B12 as is.

CU and Mizzou are free to pay the steep exit fee without seriously undermining the conference. TCU, BYU, UU and others are waiting in the wings, desperately seeking entry into the BCS.

If CU goes alone, it might face this kind of decission:

$12-13M / year in B12 TV deal
5 year value = approx $63M

$14M / year in 12Pac
-$9M exit penalty
$1M / year incremental alumni support*
5 year value = approx $66M

CU's west coast alumni would need to come through to break even on revenue. The increased travel expense pretty much eats up the surplus.

Since I'm not a huge fan of leaving for the Pac 10, I hope Nebraska is successful in getting a Big 12 TV network for all its members.. Nebraska is probably threatening to leave unless Texas agrees with a Big 12 TV network.

Its in Texas's best interest for the Big 12 to continue..

I am still holding out hope for this. Moving to the Big 12 South is not appealing to me (the South is the primary reason I want out of the Big 12), but is better than the status quo because of the $.

If college football is going to 16 team conferences, I guess I just better accept it. It's kind of sad that these conferences will lose a lot of their identity. Nebraska in the Big 10, OSU and TT in the Pac 10 make no sense. But I guess it is what it is, and we need to make sure that we have a seat at the table.

things are in flux, for sure. tech and okie state are hardly in line with the academic goals of the p10. i agree that they only get invites if texas agrees to go.

a&m may very well bolt for the sec-- it would be a good move for them. even if they extended 6 invitations, who knows if it is a package deal? the tv money will vary greatly depending on who actually joins.

texas is going to do whatever they decide to do and then things will fall into place. i think they are using the b10 like a dirty little whore to leverage both the b12 and p10. but the b10 is so desperate to land a big fish (nd or texas) that they are willing to be used in the hopes that texas decides to finally go steady with them.

CU just has to continue to evaluate the different scenarios and try to figure out where they have the best shot at increased $, etc.

i think it is entirely possible CU could get an invite without texas, but i am not entirely sure they will accept it. again. it will depend on $$$.

If CU can get a >20% premium over the expected value of a Big12 contract, then I'd expect CU's brain trust to jump.

Anything less than that, and I'd expect the CU Regents and President to hem and haw and ultimately decide the conservative option is the best option, and stay put.

I'm bracing for yet another disappointment. It's sad that fan sentiment takes a back seat to voter sentiment and mostly to TV money. But there you have it.

NU and MU are gone, it's just a matter of time. Too much money to turn down in the Big 10.

This is an interesting part of this. The SEC is the #1 conference in college football. And as far as I know they haven't said word 1 about where they stand on all this. Not only have they not said anything, but there isn't even much talk about what people think the SEC's plan might be. We've all speculated aTm, UT, OU or OSU might end up there, but i'm not sure there's much evidence that the SEC really wants to add anybody. But in the world of 16 team conferences they might feel like they need to...

Good comments.

As a side note, who in college football, or anywhere else for that matter, is better at secret, under the table, play one against the other, get what you want deals than the SEC and its schools. They make the rules up as they go and then ignore them when it is convienient.

I would not be surprised if the SEC is at this moment very actively working on getting exactly what they want and playing schools against schools and conferences against conferences to get it.

For some reason, when the dust all settles I would not be surprised to see Texas and OU in the SEC and the Big X, the Big XII, and especially the PAC 10 with egg on their faces.

The SEC looks at the TV market that Texas dominates, the success UT and OU have had on the field, the proximity to Jerry's palace and sees dollar signs and extending their dominance over college football. As far as the negatives of Texas and OU, the SEC has decades of experience dealing with spend until you win, cheat if you think you can get away with it, oversized ego schools. They aren't afraid or even worried about Texas trying to wield undue influence over the conference.
