Pat Forde: Is selective enforcement by NCAA real?

The quote is more than 20 years old but remains a classic in the annals of American sport:

"The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky, it's going to give Cleveland State two more years' probation."

The speaker was then-UNLV coach and scofflaw Jerry Tarkanian, who was on NCAA Enforcement speed dial at the time. The implication was that the rules cops take it easy on the glam programs of college sports and save the harsh justice for the rank and file.

That quote resonated with cynics convinced that the NCAA allowed the pressures of profitability and prestige to affect its system of justice. It resonated with all the fans who never thought the hammer fell hard enough to cripple their rivals (unless your rival was SMU). And it was funny.

Too bad it isn't true.

Glad to know that Forde's around to set the record straight. I mean, I can't think of a single case when CU or anyone else got a raw deal.

I love Tark. I lived in Vegas in his heyday. He is villified, and probably with merit. But I love the guy. Oh, and he actually coached his son without getting ripped apart!

His son was a pretty good college PG.. I believe he is running for US Senator or something in Nevada.

I dont read Forde's garbage but, since UNLV was brought up, just wanted to add that they were one of the best college bball team I ever saw. They were nasty with LJ, Augmon, Hunt, Anthony, etc..

yup. people forget how dominant LJ was at the NCAA level. sick.

I got to see him play at Odessa College before he played at UNLV, I asked my dad how the hell he wasnt playing with the big boys? He said," He's not exactly a rocket scientist." He was pretty damn good at the pro level too for alot of years.

always back problems in the pros. also, the NBA increasingly doesn't really have the 6' 7-9"ish low post player position (unless it's the token hustle/D player) ...while LJ was better than these guys, some very good college players didn't have much shot in "the League" for being undersized post types (with some really nice low post moves, and the ability to step out to about 15 feet).......off the top of my head Sam Clancy (USC), Lonny Baxter (Maryland), Aaron McGee (OU). All those guys were poor man's LJ's....but great to watch in college because they had drop step moves and the baby hook around the basket. get to the line, make the "and one".

Corliss Williamson from those great Arkansas teams is another great example of a 6'7" college post guy whose game never really translated to the league. He was absolutely dominant for the Hogs.

absolutely. CW was a baller at Arkansas. Great example of what i was talking about.

Back to topic for a moment. I like Pat Forde. I'm surprised at the sentiment against him on this board. I've long suspected that he's a closet CU fan--he's been kind to us.

However, I disagree with his article. He's looking at the wrong evidence. Forget how many times major programs stand at the wrong end of a long green table, and examine more closely what sanctions were levied.

Am I showing my fan bias when I examine the case of CU and Ohio State in similar student athlete/student table incidents.

1. CU self-reported that non-scholarship athletes were eating at the athlete facility in the absence of class-conflict. It was a rule that would was to be rescinded mere months after Ceal Berry reported it. Oh, the person responsible for monitoring NCAA rules at the time the rule was broken was no longer in the employment of CU, but rather working for the NCAA. The verdict? Loss of scholarhships (5 I believe).

2. Ohio State self-reported similar infractions and received a similar judgment. Unfortunately the sanctions came down 366 days into a 365 day deadline, nullifying them. Now, I went online and conducted a search to confirm my memory on this, and couldn't find it. Does anybody else have memory of this? I believe it to be true.

3. Oklahoma self-reported Bomar's mis-deeds. Fine. I'd hate for the bad judgment of one individual to undermine the hard work of a bunch fine kids. But really, which infraction do we find more serious, CU's or OU's?

So maybe it's my fan bias, but I'd submit to Mr. Forde that evidence suggests that the NCAA may investigate a lot of big name programs, but they're more likely to level sanctions which harm smaller name programs.

They were definitely tweeners, unless you are CBarkley, hard to make in the "league."

I saw an interview with Barkley the other day. They asked him what current player he would compare to himself. He said "none. they don't really use a lot of 6'5" power forwards these days"...

Gotta love Grand-ma-ma!

Regarding Forde, in general I think he's an asshat. He is from CO Springs, which may explain his niceties towards the Buffs. But he's a Mizzou grad, and he identifies mostly with the SEC these days. He has beef with certain schools/coaches and carries that through his articles. Hard to follow such a biased writer.

Forde went to high school with or was coached in high school by Gary Barnett (can't remember). That may explain why he was nice to us, and may hate CU now. I've always liked his stuff.

He played for GB at Air Academy HS. And yeah, he was very fair to us during the "scandal". I haven't noticed that he hates us now, just doesn't cover us as much. And if his complaint were with the new coach, how many of us could blame him???
