When Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe spoke Friday at the conference spring meetings about a deadline for member schools to commit, he declined to give a date.
It's much sooner than anyone expected and targets Nebraska, one of the league's premier football schools and now a linchpin in the Big 12's hopes to remain intact.
The Cornhuskers were given a deadline to make their conference intentions known within two weeks, multiple Big 12 sources confirmed Saturday night. Nebraska, along with Missouri, has been linked to Big Ten expansion plans.
Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman was not immediately available for comment.

what happens if Nebraska says we are staying in the Big 12 next week and then 6 months later accepts a bid to the Big 10?

well, if we've learned one thing.....MU's push to be a bigtime player has fizzled. make a bunch of noise, burn bridges, but still kind of an afterthought.

they may still get an invite but pretty much a sidecar affair.

What if Nebraska and Missouri just ignore Beebe? I didn't see any penalty in the article - what can he do?

I see very little reason why NU or MU shouldn't just say "yup, we are staying" and then change their mind (if/once the bags of cash arrive.

Why don't they put an ultimatum on UT and the rest of the South jackyls?? Complete favoritism by Beebe and his staff. Sickening.

Two potential snags for kNU and Mizzou. We don't know how the conference agreement is written. Potentially there is a clause in the agreement that allows for additional financial penalties based on failing to fulfill a commitment to the league office under specific circumstances. In other words a clause that says we can ask for a declaration of agreement in X period of time (two weeks in this case) and if you either don't respond or go back on it then there are additional financial penalties.

Secondly, Beebe and the league may be setting the groundwork for additional damages in the case of a lawsuit. They can argue that the business of the league has to continue and they made a good faith effort to discern the intentions of the parties involved. If the schools involved don't respond or go opposite of their responses the league can then argue damages based on having to fill or refill schedules not only for football but for all sports on short notice, potential loses in media, sponsorship, travel, etc. contracts due to the uncertainty or changes neccessitated by the actions of the schools in question as well as the damage done to the leagues reputation and goodwill in the sports marketplace. They may also argue that they would be damaged in their ability to compete for replacements to maintain the structure of the league.

Both may be pulling at straws but the league office doesn't have a lot of other options at this point so they are doing what they can.

This is kind of funny.

Texas to Mizzou and Fuskers: "Commit to the Big 12 by 5pm Friday or else."

Mizzou and Fuskers: "Or else what?"

Texas: "I've talked to the Pac-10. There is an invitation. When it comes, it'll come fast." (Actual quote).

Is it possible that this has all been created by Texas as a ploy to get Mizzou and NU to commit to the Big 12? All reports are coming out of Texas. Bohn drops a quote in the BDC then says oops to give the phony Pac 10 expansion talk the appearance of having some merit?

NU and Mizzou should commit by Friday and then tell Texas to **** off when the Big 10 invitation comes. Or just call their bluff on Friday.

You can't look someone in the eye and ask a direct question when you have your head up their butt.:argh:

I am starting to think that Texas really does want to stay in the Big 12. Maybe we can get equal revenue sharing out of this. If so, would your feelings towards Dr. Tom change? (I cannot believe I just called him Dr.)

Because Texas is just finishing what NU and MU started.

Something is rotten in the state of Texas. I smell a heaping pile of bull****.

Maybe Pac 10 sans UTerus is possible after all.

We can only hope. I really want nothing to do with those assholes. The only thing worse than going into the Pac with Texass is being left behind completely. I'm even starting to wonder if that wouldn't be such a bad deal.

So basically you hate UT for being successful and knowing how to win.

This doesn't make any sense.

The Big 12 (Beebe) gives an ultimatum to Nebraska and Missouri. They have to say "we are going to the Big Ten or not" within two weeks, without having received any formal (legal) invitation to do so? What does Beebe expect them to say. "Based on the information in front of us at this time, we are not in a position to become Big Ten members". Which will be true. Beebe gets all happy happy joy joy and thinks his conference is safe. Nebraska and Missouri CAN'T and WON'T be stupid enough to say "well if the Big Ten comes calling we'll jump ship in two seconds flat, so penalize us all you want even though we have no idea what the Big Ten will do".

The purpose of the deadline (from Beebe's perspective) is so that he can negotiate successfully NEXT APRIL? What is wrong with this timeframe? Does he need 10 months to prepare?

The "hidden purpose" is so that the Big 12 South (and maybe CU) can then accept a Pac-10 invitation if Nebraska/Missouri are leaving?

The Big 12 expects to stiffen the penalties for any schools that might be leaving or thinking about leaving. If I were Nebraska or Missouri and the Big Ten sent an invite 6 months from now, I would sue the pants of the Big 12.

What Texas and others are trying to do is basically penalize everyone else if they miss out on an opportunity to jump to the Pac, not what the Big 12 is losing in any negotiations because there ARE NO negotiations going on right now for the Big 12 revenue-wise.

At this point, I wouldn't mind if CU jumped ship first and ran the risk of the exit-penalty. Take the one Pac-10 invite and watch everyone scramble for new homes, while effectively blocking Baylor from getting into the Pac as well. Then the conference would be dead, no penalty levied, and Beebe is left holding the bag with Baylor and Iowa State as the only teams to "commit" to the Big 12.

I think I'm starting to see you point.

Hey B12, you want CU's exit penalty? Go collect it from Jeff Bzdelik.

Seriously, just consider the overage made from that inequitable revenue sharing arrangement all call it even.

I think this Pac16 idea is just a threat to counter the Big10's possible expansion to 16 teams in an effort to preserve the Big12. Why else would have Bohn 'leaked' the idea? Couple this with the deadlines given to Neb and they maybe thinking that they can get the Big10 to show their hand and concede that they really only want to expand to 12 teams and that Neb is the 3rd (or lower) choice. That way the bitchass cornhuskers commit to the Big12 and UT settles down. I don't think UT really wants to go to the Pac and would just as soon go independent. The question is does the Pac really want to go to 12 and does Bohn really want to leave the Big12? Oh yeah, and F%$# Baylor
