Bleacher Report Slide show: Who will win the Big 12?

You do realize absolutely ANYBODY can create a blog on Bleacher Report, right? No special requirement to do so.
Here's the bio of the guy who put CU 12th (yes, FOR REAL.):

My name is Louie Longoria and I am 21 years old. I am currently attending Texas A&M University-Kingsville and, believe it or not, am actually pursuing a degree an Accounting.

Sounds like a real college football authority to me. I live down here, and have never heard of Kingsville. Perhaps we can get s student from the Colorado State - Meeker campus to write a blog....

You've never heard of the Division II Texas-A&M Kingville (TAMUK) Javelinas?

Have you been in a cave, man? They are the darlings of the Lone Star Conference South.

Actually today was the first I'd heard of them too, but it's a slow news day waiting for the invite to the PAC 16 WEST Conference, and hearing how little will happen to USC this time.

Interesting.. So what requirement did Woelk, Kiszla, Paige and Krieger have to write their idiotic columns for their papers?

Only that they convinced an editor to hire them and pay them for their words. Although it's not a requirement, it means they likely had a college degree, possibly in journalism or related field, and had worked for a newspaper or similar publication previously, and demonstrated some understanding of sports. Once in a while, somebody's nephew who needs a job gets hired, but with the competition for journalism jobs (paying ones) these days, and newspapers dying in every city, usually it's degree+experience+familiarity with beat.

A blogger may have better insight, writing skills, sources and punctuation than a paid journalist, but often a blogger is just someone with an internet connection who wants to spew forth their opinion for the consumption of the masses. You can do it, I can do it, DBT can do it. No admission test.

Have you been to Meeker, CO?

I'm confused by this question. Is it as random as it seems?

And I know you asked mdel, but I have been there. Does this open up something you wanted to say about something?

Sorry...yes, seems pretty random....

I was just curious if anyone picked up on my (apparently lame) attempt to equate the importance of Texas A&M - Kingsville with Colorado State - Meeker (ficticious school, obviously). I was thinking that nobody knew that Meeker was a town in Colorado...

Blasphemy!

Meeker :

  • is the county seat and most populous town of Rio Blanco County, Colorado.

  • was named for Nathan Meeker, a Native American agent who was killed along with 11 other U.S. citizens by Ute Indians in the 1879 Meeker Massacre.

  • was visited by President Theodore Roosevelt on a mountain lion hunting trip.

  • has a "has a modern general aviation airport with full-service fixed base operations and charter service."

  • has absolutely nothing "new" posted on the Municipal "What's New" page.

  • employs a chief of police, lieutenant chief, four patrolmen and one animal control officer.

  • celebrates the oldest annual rodeo in Colorado! (This grand event includes parade and a reenactment of the Meeker massacre.)

  • has one high school, which shares a mascot and logo with a University in Wyoming.
meeker cowboy..jpg

  • enrolls about 630 students from kindergarten through 12th grade in the Meeker public schools.

  • wishes to be known as "the elk capital of Colorado."

  • hosts the annual class sheepdog championship trials each September.

Nice...20 years ago, working for Exxon, I stayed in a motel that cost $15/night. What a sweet night that was.

My kid's club soccer team had a game against a team that was combined from Craig/Meeker and it was a home game for them.

The ENTIRE towns (both of them, I recall) came out to watch them kick our butts. Which they did. I recall a few businesses even closed during the games and put "gone to soccer field" on the door for the duration.

We had only about 8 or 9 guys able to make it for the long drive. They had about 25 suited up, or it seemed like it anyway. One of the refs was a high-schooler dating one of their guys ---(Not saying she wasn't fair, it was just awkward to have them discussing their plans for upcoming weekends during the game.) Great small town atmosphere. Memorable. Long long drive home after the loss.

We used to play them every year in High School baseball (from Glenwood Springs). It sucked balls to travel there and play a double header. Their field was crappy, the town small, but it did feel like the whole county showed up to watch the games.
