I think I just want to be in a conference with no ties to Texas

I am sure the money would do great things for the school and the AD but being associated with UT or the state of Texas will just ruin it all.

If the Pac is willing to let UT tell them what to do before the invite is even offered up tells me that I don't want CU in that conference anyway. I am already pissed that Tech is involved and Okie State isn't all that impressive either. You know if UT or any schools from Texas are in this new Pac conference, they are going to eventually try and wrestle the championship game away from the Rose Bowl and put it in the new Walmart Bowl that Jerry built, not to mention the fact that Mile High will never get a chance to sniff that game.

It would suck to be playing in some crippled Big12 or hybrid MWAC but if it means not having to deal with Texas getting everything it wouldnt be all that bad. Plus maybe we can work out a better TV deal where more real CU fans can actually watch all the games.

Agree on a lot of levels. Part of what got me the most pumped up about moving to the Pac 10 was bidding adieu to Texas... time to leave Texas and their corrosive ways. Someone else described Texas as being toxic, and that sums it up very well.

The Pac has been a dream of mine, but if it must come with the Big XII South, I say we pass. The new Big XII / MWC won't be great, but we'll have a good shot at being very good again soon.

Here's the catch. Will the Big XII have the power to remain a conference long enough to send out its own invites? Or will the remaining Big XII teams be forced to accept invites from the MWC? This matters, because in the former case, we can cut the fat out of the conference and dismiss Wyoming and one other (SDSU? UNLV?). This will free up space to merge the four Big XII schools (CU, KU, KSU, ISU) and Boise State... and still be at 12.

Of course, we could try to expand east and recruit Memphis, Houston or Louisville too.

Urbana, interesting theory... if we could keep the Big 12 North intact (and equal distribution of TV $$$ would do it), we could then add another 10 teams and form a very solid 16 team conference. Wouldn't be a major revenue producer, but still would provide a nice bump. The pod system could be installed to preserve some natural rivalries. Here is my thought:

East Pod: Iowa St, Kansas, K-State, Missouri
Mountain Pod: Colorado, Nebraska, CSU, AFA
West Pod: Boise St, Utah, BYU, Fresno St
South Pod: TCU, Houston, UNLV, New Mexico

It would be a great BB conference as well. I love it because we jettison the Big 12 South cancers.

We could call it the "lick my balls" conference. Yeah, I'm looking at you, Baylor.

Something weird has happened during this expansion process. I've felt oddly warm toward nebraska. It creeps me out.

I wonder, if a situation like this plays out, will the league offices be located in Denver? I guess it would have to be a new conference for that to happen.

I still hope CU heads to the MWC...it's just too appealing to pass up. This would be great for college sports in the state of Colorado and I have openly questioned if this state can support the Denver Broncos and a big time college football program at the same time.

So you're admitting that it's in your agenda to downgrade the big-time college football program. With fans like these...

f*ck you.

I'm a fan who sat in the student bleachers with my father during the 1990 season...I enjoyed seeing CU beat Texas and OU that season while watching John Elway lose another Super Bowl that season.

I'm imploring CU fans to take a honest assessment of being in the MWC versus the Pac-16. Either way, the CU fans on the west coast will still see their Buffs in either conference.

While I have wanted to be in the Pac 10 for a long time, I think I would rather have the Big 8 align against the Texas schools, take the best 7 of the Mountain West and add Boise than to be affiliated with the Texas schools.

This would be a soft landing for us, all things considered. However, here is the problem. The only way it is manageable is if we convince Nebraska and Mizzou to come along. And the only way that happens is if they don't get Big Ten invites. And if they don't get Big Ten invites, that means that the BT is likely holding tight at 12 with Notre Dame. And all that means is that the Big Ten may decide to expand again up to 14 or 16 in the near future. And this brings NU and MU back into the conversation.

That's a long-winded way of saying that the future of this new Big 8/MWC is tenuous at best, especially if the star members are already eyeing a way out in the next 5 years or so.

If we get left out and have to stay in a diminished Big 12, do we get a massive influx of cash from the 6 teams that would be forced to pay the penalty to leave?

Nope. I believe that any more than 4 teams leaving will officially break the conference.

If CU gets forced to ask the MWC for an invite we are totally screwed. SEC is paying their schools around $18mil, Big10 $20mil, PAC10 with UT and others are going to collect around $20mil each for a new tv deal.

Leftover Big12 and some MWC schools, CU will be lucky to get a tv deal paying them what they get now from the existing Big12 contract.

If we end up in some form of the MWC it is going to kill CU in the long run.

I was so hoping that the PAC would expand by 2 and take CU/Utah. We could have been done with all things Texass. Now it sounds like PAC is taking all things Texass and i have a very bad feeling that we are going to be totally screwed.

Conference ties don't mean much these days? You might be on to something there.

Have you ever bothered to sit down and think about how much AFA, Wyoming, CSU, New Mexico, Utah, and BYU fans could help CU at the gates at Folsom Field or the CEC? I went to an UNM-CU game at CEC and I noticed there was a good number of Lobo fans at that game and I don't think UNM has that many alumni in Colorado.

The game I am referring to is http://espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=273130038
Later on December 2nd, Stanford came to town: http://espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=273360038

The UNM game lists 8,732 fans showed up for the game while the Stanford game lists 6,175.

I was there at both games and if you bought a game ticket to the UNM game, you could get the Stanford-CU game ticket for just $5. That promotion still didn't help attendance for the Stanford game. Border rivalries do mean something eh?

Not that ticket prices are worthless, but the big money is in TV deals, where the MWC wont get any

I agree those TV deals are valuable. But what percentage does the Big 12 TV $$$ take in the total CU revenue pie?

The big question is how much does CU actually make at home games in football and MBB per season?

Im sure that ticket prices would be on par with TV if you look at it like that, but you should look at the delta, what would the revenue be if you were in the Pac-10 vs the MWC

Tickets: Slight advantage in the MWC possibly (but I think that would be a good debate)
TV: Much higher in the PAC, probably ~$10 million difference if we can find a good MWC TV deal

But I think the biggest difference would be depending on how good of a team we have. And in that case, the PAC-10 has a much higher potential to make money.

It doesn't have anything to do with it being a border "rival", it's simply that Lobo basketball fans just travel well.

TV currently equals approx 20% of CU's current income (>$8M)
A Pac16 TV contract worth $20M would represent almost 40% of CU's revenue.

It would amount to a 30% increase in revenue.

CSU, on the other hand, earns half as much as CU, and TV makes less than 15% of their income from TV. Most of that comes from the CU-CSU game.

Getting infront of a national TV audience is a big deal. Getting a national audience on a regular basis as part of a big contract is even better. It's not that hard of a concept.
