Strength of Schedule Blues

I'm not a big fan of Phil Steele --his mag is a graphic nightmare -- but it's interesting to look at his strength of schedule rankings for the Big 12.

The Buffs clock in at at a respectable #20.

Texas? #62
Nebraska? #76
Missouri? #54
Kansas? #78
KSU? #51
Baylor #41

The only Big 12 team ranked higher than CU is ISU -- which he has ranked at #1! Road games at Iowa, Texas and Oklahoma will do that to you.

With all the challenges the Buffs face, the last thing they need is the second toughest schedule in the league. Maybe it's time to start scheduling some bogus OOC games -- at least until the program gets back on its feet.

I disagree! Even though we are currently getting clowned on the field one of the things I take great pride in as a CU alum and Buff fan is the fact that we always play at least one or two tough OOC games every year. I think this does do a lot for recruiting as well as promote our university. Dan Hawkins was on Chip Brown's show on May 25 (Check out the audio vault link on 104.9 the horn website if you want to listen) and one of the first things they talked about was the scheduling with upcoming games vs Cal and Georgia this year asked him if the AD hated him! Really funny but I like the fact that for the most part (yes I know about Toledo an Montana State) CU does a really good job of playing tough teams. FWIW I don't think we should change this model. Stick to the best competition!!

Been saying that for years. We should be playing CSU and 3 cupcakes. You want to add in one BCS opponent fine, but we are over scheduling and we aren't getting any benefit for playing these tough games other than losses and nice little write-ups in preseason magazines talking about how great our non-conference schedule is. who cares. Take the 3 wins please.

That would be all fine and dandy if we were getting anything out of it. Recruiting isn't improving because of it. Winning isn't improving because of it. What's it doing other than people patting us on the back for saying they play a tough non-conference schedule. That doesn't do anything for the program.

The few recruits we do get like the fact that we play in a big time conference and play the big boys of college football. If we had a schedule like KSU we would get even less. The guys we get know the program is down but realize the exposure they get by playing in the Big XII AND Playing traditionally good teams we play during out OOC. Playing these schools also increases the chances of getting picked up by TV which in turn increases our yearly revenue - CU vs. Georgia/Cal does a lot more than CU/Vs Montana State, Troy State (Insert ****ty team here).

Yep, tough non-conference scheduling is a hallmark of CU. Fans around the country know this, even from back in our glory days. Recently, people have seen the Buffs play in Tallahassee, Athens, Morgantown, a bunch of Pac 10 towns. In '90, I think we played Washington, Texas and Illinois all out of conference. Yikes.

I disagree. Ugly losses will only help accelerate the end of the DH era.

Really? We can't even beat Montana State.

Bohn and others have noted that fans don't show up unless its a big game. The AD is department is still losing money so they need all the revenue they can get. And that means getting fans into the stadium.

that was one game.. We aren't selling out nonconference "big games" now.. Arizona State was below 50,000.. Winning attracts crowds.. 6-6 football creates apathy. That will continue if we keep thinking we need these "big games" to stay afloat.

Playing cal and georgia is great. Losing MOST of the tough non-conference games is not. CU has to schedule these games to get people to show up. It isn't helping that we have sucked for 4 years under hawk.

Do you want more fans or more wins/interest?

It holds more water if your actually winning at least half of these tough non-conference games. Just saying you play them means squat.

I have been asking for a "dumbed down" non-conference schedule for about a decade now.

That would be one very nice thing about joining an enlarged Pac-10, CU wouldn't be able to go out nad schedule a whole bunch of heavy-hitters in the non-conference schedule.

I think it's less "competition" and more "autolosses".
