This bodes well for Utah!

Yeah, the article actually has some good logic to it. If the Utes were to join the P-10, something else would happen as well. It would drive a wedge right down the middle of those texass schools. That would send shivers thru all of those texass politicans that wanted a package deal. With everything unfolding the way it has over the last several days, I'm not sure who hates texas more. Us, or the butthuskers. What I do find funney, is that quite a few of the other CFB articles that talk about the break-up of the B-12, blame the butthuskers for it's demise. For once the finger isn't being pointed at CU again.

So what you're saying, if I read you right, is that we didn't start it, but we finished it?

After reading that column, I'd say that Utah to the Pac is anything but a "done deal". Yes, it makes sense in a lot of ways, but that doesn't make it a done deal. The author is making a lot of assumptions not based in any known facts. Stuff like the Utah AD wouldn't be on vacation if he didn't know he had an invite in hand, and that A&M to the SEC is a sure fire certainty.

I hope he's right, though. I think it would make for a very nice conference. Very competitive. Lots of bowl games. Lots of money. Lots of exposure. Utah > A&M for CU.

CU could very well be the "deciding voice" on who the 16th member is, if there is a "close call" between Utah and Kansas.

The Pac-10 currently has a "rivalry" revenue sharing for football gate receipts. Basically each school gets a 50% share of the gate receipts for rivalry games, so you want your rival to be similar in fanbase and ticket prices. Currently Washington-Washington State is a lopsided revenue split with Wazzou clearing a half million over what the Huskies get in return.

Would CU be better able to monetize a rivalry with Utah, or continuing one with Kansas?

EDIT: Adding Utah with CU could also provide some great winter sports content for the Pac Network, but KU hoops might be an overriding factor.

I think the Pac would prefer Utah to KU. It's a better geographical fit. It solidifies the conference and eliminates the MWC from BCS consideration.

True, great points. But that might also mean the MWC and BYU mounts a tough political challenge to giving Utah away.

If we were talking about taking Tech or Kansas, it would be a no-brainer for Kansas. I don't think that's the choice at hand, though. In a perfect world, we take both Utah AND Kansas, along with UT, OU and OSU. That really puts UT on an island but generates the TV revenues that we want to have. If I were Larry Scott, this is something I'd be considering, if it's a possibility. Who knows what kind of agreements have already been made?

There are a lot scenarios at play here and its possible the MWC could end up with KU, KSU, ISU, and possibly MU as members and that boosts their standing. The Plus one format will always leave the door open for the MWC, SWC, and so forth so long as they are ranked. If the Big 12 folds completely the MWC might replace us in that automatic bid spot at the Fiesta. The BCS created plus to keep the little guys happy enough to dispell a revolution at the NCAA.

I don't think that adding KU, KSU, ISU, and MU is enough to garner an automatic BCS bid, especially if Utah is no longer in the same conference. That's JMHO. Although I have to laugh at the prospect of Missouri in the MWC. I wonder how Jizla would handle that one, seeing as he's been such a vocal proponent of the MWC all along?

Everything I've heard points to OU, OSU, Tech and UT being locks. That means there's one iffy spot -- a spot I would very much fight to get Utah in. They would be a perfect fourth for a "Mountain Pod" division.

While I agree that given the choice between KU and UU, that Utah would be my choice, keep in mind that Mike Bohn was a quarterback at Kansas. Tad Boyle played basketball at Kansas. Nobody at CU has any ties whatsoever to Utah. If Bohn has any say in this matter, it wouldn't surprise me if he recommended Kansas. That would be a mistake, IMO.

Another Kansas-Pac-10 connection:

The University of Oregon President (Lariviere) is the former KU Vice-Chancellor/provost.

Honestly, all things considered, if aggy spot opens, the Pac-15 would be crazy to not invite KU. Their basketball program warrants such consideration. While I wish they would end up on the island of misfit programs along with the others, their hoops program will bail them out. Hopefully to the Big East, though.

Not necessarly, more like the Butthuskers started it and they finished it. CU was just the 1st one to break the deadbolt on the door so the Butthuskers could break it down and leave. But it's been no secret since day 1 that uncle Tom Osbourne has been highly dissapointed in the way texass and the rest of the S. division has flaunted to Beebe and the rest of the B-12 how things are going to be. I would really be surprised if the P-11 allowed texass into the conferance with anykind of carte' blanche at all. If Scott has any stones, he and the rest of the P-11 will tell texass that the league as a whole drives the sports car, not 1 team, regardless of the revenue they may generate for the conferance. Scott appears to be more democratic than socialist.

I think Scott and the Pac demonstrated who drives the sports car on Thursday.

Won't happen, Scotty. There is nothing BYU or the MWC can do or say to keep us. They know this. It is an accepted fact. They won't put up a fight. Just like we would not fight to keep BYU.

There is definitely a faction of Ute fans who claim to be connected (or, more accurately, know someone who claims to be connected) who say this is a done deal and has been for months.

I'm not in that category. This is a very organic situation and one that could just as easily leave Utah out, as in.

I'm not sure what to say about us versus KU. That's an intriguing decision for the PAC11. I don't think it's cut and dry if you're looking at it objectively.

KY pluses: Current AAU, Top 5 all-time basketball program (I'm pulling that out of my rear, but that's my guess).
Utah pluses: Recent/current football success. (Isn't that what's driving this?) A bigger market (slightly), and frankly, a growing, and much, much younger market. (Isn't that the other thing driving this?). We're not AAU, but a tier 1 reasearch institution with AAU quickly coming w/in the next decade. (And PAC inclusion would probably speed that up).

Again we're a quickly growing market. Both organic growth and immigration to our healthy and diverse local economy. I don't have my hands on the research, but while were the #31 TV market today, give that 20 years, and we're probably WELL W/IN the top 25. But honestly, you don't have to tell the PAC brass this. They've already been doing this research for the last several months. The lightbulb has already gone on over their head. (Not saying they've made a decision, but they KNOW who we are and what we are becoming).

While we are no KU in hoops, I'd put us as no worse than a top 20 all-time basketball program (some ESPN or SI article ranked us somewhere around 11-15 all time, but I'm not going to hunt that down because - who really cares, right?). It was just 12 years ago we were playing KY for the championship. It was just five years ago we were in the sweet 16 with Bogut. It was just two years ago that we won the MWC championship and conf tournament. That goes with our host of other sweet 16's and Final Fours, NBA draft picks, etc.

Our hoop success extends long before Majerus, lest you think it was just a one-coach thing. In fact, Rick ranks probably as our 3rd-best coach/era, but definitely the most recent. Our hoops is nothing to sneeze at, and frankly would be considered immediately compete in a pod with you, ASU and UofA. (Gotta give the nod to the 'Cats.) For a quick view of Ute hoop success, check out the table on the right side of this Wikipedia page. It's a good summary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_Utes_men%27s_basketball

We're a football market. Particularly, a college football market. I don't have my hands on the research, but while were the #31 TV market today, give that 20 years, and we're probably AT LEAST top 25. We tend to have a lot of kids around here and we like to stick around. But honestly, you don't have to tell the PAC brass this. They've already been doing this research for the last several months.

Oh, believe me, I know our basketball team isn't great. I think a lot of that has to do with the conference we play in, though. The Big 12 is a murderers row. Every game is against a team that could be in the tournament. Literally every team in the B12 is good enough to be in the tournament. Well, maybe not nebraska, but who cares about them, anyway?

I'm rooting for you, though. I would far rather deal with Utah than A&M or Tech. blech.

As for KU/UU - that's going to be a tough call, frankly. I think the Pac is sitting back and waiting to see what A&M does. If A&M goes to the SEC, then the SEC *might* make a play for KU, and you'll be in good shape.

Thanks for the well wishes. We'll take any good vibes we can get this next couple days.

I'm taking nothing for granted. As I've said before, this is going to be a long weekend. Crossing my fingers knowing it could break one of a hundred different ways.

I'm sure Kiszla would fully support it.
