Big 12 possibly staying together, with concessions to UT for being the "hero"

Blurb - non linkable, sorry - in this morning's Times Call reports that the remaining Big 12 schools are close to an agreement to stick together, with several concessions being granted to UT. Now tell me folks, what the hell does UT need with any more concessions?

This league is doomed. The very thing that is splitting it apart is about to get worse. What could possibly go wrong? If I were A&M and OU, I'd be telling the Big 12 to suck it. I'm sure there's a lot of political pressure being applied to A&M, but so what?

Better to have their politicians forcing decisions on their own schools, rather than others for a change.

Another reason I'm so glad we got the hell out of dodge. I would like to have the extra cash that Texas would bring but if it doesn't happen its no big deal. Even if they all stay together the league is doomed to fail in the next 3-5 years or not bring the kind of draw it once had. Either way its good we got out. Glad to be in a league with where we can have a little more say in matters.

:woot:If this happens it is the best of all worlds for the Buffs. We get to go to the PAC10 and leave the Texas schools and the almost Texans in Oklahoma behind. This would mean that we get to play an actual PAC schedule instead of what is basically a modified Big XII south schedule, don't have to deal with the Texas schools having the PAC link in what has been our best recruiting grounds in S. Cal., and don't have to deal with those arrogant Texans trying to run the league and turn every championship and tourney into home games for themselves. It also means that we don't have to deal with the Texans trying to dominate league TV coverage including their "Texas" network.

If this comes to pass I will be very happy.

That all said my gut feeling is that Texas and A&M make an end run to the SEC before this is all over, with a good chance the OK schools join them.

If true, all this does is delay the inevitable. The Big 12 is doomed, and granting more power, money and influence to UT is only going to hasten that demise. The SEC is sitting back, looking at it's options, and will eventually pick off a few plums, probably OU and A&M. If they don't go now, they'll go in another couple years. Mizzou is saying that it wants to stick to the B12 because it doesn't have any other options, but if those options re-present themselves, Mizzou is a vapor trail. KU has got to be feeling like it just got a death row pardon, and would be wise to start checking it's options as well.
The Big 12 isn't dead - yet. But it is on life support, and the vultures are circling.

Texas could leverage this into exactly what they want, their own show without even the pretense of having to worry about what the other schools think. They would get the scheduling advantages of a conference for both football and all of the other sports with the advantage that they would know that they have a bunch of guaranteed victories each year with ISU, KSU, KU (football), Mizzouri, TT, Baylor. If they can keep OU around as a partner at the top they can claim that the conference is legit. With a number of essentially byes in conference they can then schedule like an independant OOC against major schools and keep those broadcasting rights separate in their own network. Result a guaranteed winning record, a boatload of money, an almost guaranteed BCS bid at least for the next BCS cycle (they would have UT, OU, KU, who have been recent participants plus Mizzou, OSU, and KSU who have been highly ranked in recent years.

Considering their past history I don't think this is far fetched at all although eventually I think UT ends up in the SEC or maybe in the Big X if ND doesn't go there.

You are already sounding like a Mormon. Perhaps a little foreshadowing?

Mormon I am definately not. I just see the PAC as a great fit for us and other conferences as a better place for Texas. I don't see Texas getting along very well with the PAC 10 schools and we have all experienced why.

As to Utah, they are a logical partner for us in joining the PAC 10 but other than that I couldn't care less about them (other than they are not a bunch of arrogant jerks like Texas.)

poor Dan Beebe is being played like a fiddle he believes he can save the big XII!!

What choice does he have? He has to do everything he can to save the conference. The problem he has is that the conferences problems are 100% caused by one school, and he's trying to save the conference by giving that school even more influence. He's in a tough spot - he needs UT to keep the conference intact, but UT is the reason the conference is falling apart to begin with.

Won't happen. aTm is gone, thus Texas comes out looking like the good guy cause they were committed, but now must leave since aTm left first.

Edit: After actually reading Chip's article, this is nothing more than a thinly veiled PR piece by UT to now say "oh the fate is on you aTm, we are committed, but if you leave then you destroy the Big 12". First it was NU, now aTm. Absolutely astounding the victim crap UT puts out there to spin this. Big 12 is dead.

I think that if Utah goes to the Pac 11 its all over. The Pac 11 will stop at 12, the SEC will not offer AtM, which I doubt they have yet, because they did not want to expand in the first place, they just got caught up in all of this when there were threats of a Pac 16. ND stays where it is, and the Big 10 is done as well. The Big 12 will either add two teams, or stay with 10.

This is my ideal, but also what I think will happen. And I will laugh at Texas thinking that they are king ****.

It wouldn't shock me if the Big 10 stepped up with a Missouri invitation in order to kill this on the vine.

I agree. I think there's probably a little bit of collusion between the B10 and P10 on this. Eliminate a BCS conference. If the B10 has to invite Mizzou to accomplish that feat, I think they'll do it. Mizzou would be out the door before the ink dried on the offer. Then the Pac invites Utah to kill any chance that the MWC gets an auto-BCS bid.

I believe the BX/PX collusion has been on since the start. Totally makes sense.

Yep. When you look at the two teams that were poached, it really does start to make sense. Take two teams out of the mix, see if that makes the conference collapse. If it does, great. If it doesn't take two more teams, repeat until desired effect is achieved.

Dunno about aTm. I think the idea of getting into Texas is very appealing to the SEC. Eventually I think they think they'd love to land the wHorns (they'll find out differently soon enough - everybody does). Getting Aggie not only gives them a Texas foothold, but it gives them a natural rival for Texass. The same thing, somewhat, with the reports they've talked to OU. The Sooners are definitely appealing on their own, but a league with OU and aTm might be a bit more appealing to UT, even if they claim to have no interest in the SEC for akademek reasons....

No interest in the SEC for academic reasons, but having no issue with letting OSU and TT potentially tag along to the Pac-16? Texas sucks.

the Big XII's not worth saving. Without Denver, the only major markets you have are Austin, Dallas and Houston, and maybe St. Louis. No network is going to offer a national channel deal with only those.

LOL. ESPN reporting Texas is at the table with the remaining Big XII schools, discussing a TV deal that would pay UT and A&M 24-27m a year and everone else in the conference 14-17m. Sorry, no link, just heard it on Sports Center.

Yeah, OU is really going to go for that. Right.

If the Big 1/Little 9 conference can get that kind of jack, what can the Pac get? (Maybe I should have called it Big 1/Medium 1/Little 8)

:wow:

I really feel sorry for those B12 teams left behind. The Buffs and the corn saw the writing on the wall and knew they had to get away from the Texas-centric B12. Now, every B12 team left, except for maybe A&M, must rely on Texas to either 1) bolt to the PAC ? and either take them along or not; or 2) commit to the B12, but on any terms that Texas demands-like we'll take 2x the TV money as everyone else, we'll have our own cable network and keep all the proceeds, etc.

It must be especially galling for OU, who has been just as competitive in football but is still treated like Texas' kid brother in conference realignment.

However you cut it, what's left of the B12 is screwed.

Forget the fact that OU would be crazy to agree to such a deal if the $EC is actually considering them and the Pac-10 has an offer on the table, but how in the **** is TT going to take that idea? UT and aTm both get the big split, and TT gets lumped in with everybody else??? (Including Bailer, who is suddenly right back in the game..) So much for the "one for all and all for Texas" bull****...
