Not surprised at all. I along with others here, have been speculating UT wasn't going any where. They like being king of the hill, even if the hill is dung. If they went Pac 10 or B10 they are no longer the big fish, (i.e. USC, UM, tOSU). The B12 will be "saved". Everyone will line up for Bevo to service them as a price of the fealty to the Horns. I'm glad CU got out....

What I don't understand about this whole "Beebee Plan" business is how a TV deal could be renegotiated now when the Big 12 has years remaining on their current contract. If you're a network (and I know this has been discussed to some extent already), why would you want to pay more money for less product. The Big 12 is now down to 10 and can't play a championship game. I just don't see how Beebee could pull all of these additional millions of dollars out of his ass to entice the rest of the Big 12 south to stay. Anyone seeing anything I'm not?

More like them servicing Bevo.

If so, the Big 12 is on life support. It won't last another 5 years without UT giving up a ton of power and influence - and money. You have at least three, if not 6 of the remaining teams that are seriously looking at greener pastures. Once the opportunity presents itself for Mizzou, OU, and A&M to leave, they'll be out in a New York Minute.

I agree with this. The Big 12 has lost CU and Nebraska, both of which make up most of the market share in the North. They are also probably going to lose A&M as well. Three of the bigger schools... how do they magically get more money out of that? Also, what network is going to pay that type of money to broadcast Big 12 games when as I stated earlier three of the bigger schools will be gone? I think Texas might be able to pull $15-$17 million for itself, the rest of the conference no way in hell.

No, IMO, Beebe is nothing more than DeLoss Dodds cabana boy. Unless, they renegotiate with the networks for an extension, I'm not sure anything changes. I don't see how fewer TV's will be more $$$$, although there might be some marginal increase because of a ten way split instead of a 12 way. UT wanted to keep the B12 intact and was likely ready to withstand two or maybe even three defections. They like their little kingdom and weren't about to let it go. If more than three teams had bailed, they may have seriously looked at another conference, but short of that, they like having the B12 N as their whipping boys. With Leach gone, only aTm and OU really give them a game. And aTm just barely.

I think what they should do is add TCU and Houston and re-name it the "Southwest Conference." The new iteration of the SWC will be doomed to failure, just as the original was. But at least the hats in Austin can pat themselves on the back for being heroes for a few years.

The only way I see those numbers working is if they're counting on splitting a lot of $$$ from the exit penalties of the other schools...

Please let this be true. Add Utah and be done with it for now.

When the Big 12 lite folds in a few yeas the PAC can poach some teams if the opportunity arises.

What's the exit penalty going to be? $20 million total? Split 9 or 10 ways? Ok, that's roughly $2 million per school for one year. No way in hell that TV contract could possibly be done is what I'm saying.

Texas is willing to listen because the Big 12 is offering to let UT create its own television network and also willing to let UT keep all the revenue from such a network.

OU is apparently looking to create a similar network.

No need for a conference championship.....just crown the whorns champ when the year begins, the old north division will not be any competition for them
The Sooners have already demonstrated their subservience through this process "All kneel before Bevo"

Rename the conference "The Stroke Bevo's Ego 10"
The materialistic in me says; "too bad, nice to have had Texas money"
The pragmatic in me says; "Continued cooperation just comes at too high a price"

Be interesting to see if five years down the road the whorns start getting spanked in bowl games because of very little real competition in the conference. Why does anyone think these SEC teams are so dang tough - week in week out they are often tested to the limit during conference play.

At least the Baylor Boors will be placated

3.1
Membership. Each Member Institution shall remain a member of the Conference
until July 1, 2006 (the “Current Term”) and during any Additional Term (as defined
below). Unless a Member Institution gives written notice that it will withdraw from
the Conference at the end of the Current Term or the then-current Additional Term to
all other Member Institutions and the Conference (a “Notice”) not less than two (2)
years before the end of the Current Term or the then-current Additional Term, as the
case may be, each Member Institution shall remain a member of the Conference for
an additional five-year period after the end of the Current Term or the then-current
Additional Term, as the case may be (each, an “Additional Term”) unless such member is a Breaching Member. Each Member Institution agrees that in the event such Member desires to withdraw from the Conference, that it will in good faith give Notice not less than two (2) years before the end of the Current Term or any Additional Term, as the case may be. No Member Institution shall be entitled to distribution of the then-current revenues from the Conference after the effective date of its withdrawal, resignation, or the cessation of its participation in the Conference (the “Effective Date”).

3.2

Effect of Giving Notice. If a Member Institution gives proper Notice pursuant to Section 3.1 (a “Withdrawing Member”), then the Members agree that such withdrawal would cause financial hardship to the remaining Member Institutions of the Conference, and that the financial consequences cannot be measured or estimated with certainty at this time. Therefore, in recognition of the obligations and responsibilities of each Member Institution to all other Member Institutions of the Conference, each Member Institution agrees that the amount of revenue that would have been otherwise distributable to a Withdrawing Member pursuant to Section 2 herein for the final two (2) years of the Current Term or the then current Additional Term, as the case may be, shall be reduced by fifty percent (50%), with
the remainder to be distributed to the other Member Institutions who are not Withdrawing Members or Breaching Members (as defined below) as additional Conference revenues in accordance with Section 2 herein. The Member Institutions agree that such reduction in the amount of revenues distributed to a Withdrawing Member is reasonable and shall be in the form of liquidated damages and not be construed as a penalty.

The Big 12 conference distributed $103.1 million (in 2007/2008 - the latest numbers available). Colorado received $8.0 million of that.

If Colorado gave proper notice, they would have to forfeit half of their conference money. Based upon the 2007/2008 figures that would be approximately $4 million.
