Chip Brown: "How it all went down"

COLORADO - The Buffaloes can spin this any way they want, but they effectively gambled and lost. They got out ahead of the posse on Friday, hoping to cut off Baylor from trying to wrangle its invitation to the Pac-10, according to sources. The Buffs believed Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech were unshakable to the Pac-10, thus anticipating the Big 12 would crumble, so there would be no one left to collect the Buffs' buyout penalties. Now, there are 10 schools gladly waiting to line their pockets with $15 million the Buffs' can't afford to pay. (CU couldn't afford to pay Dan Hawkins' $3 million buyout last year. Gulp.)

Baghdad Chip is a funny guy. We joined a prestigious conference that believes in treating everyone the same and left behind a conference that bends over for UT. Yep, we are the losers.

The finale in his propaganda pieces, I'd presume.

The KU thing sounds like a lie and I got a laugh out of the "Losers" comment on CU. Does UT not realize we're not under their hoof anymore???

http://texas.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1094753

I hope most people understand that orangebl**ds.com is essentially the propaganda arm of the Texas AD. Any coincidence they broke every story correctly? Unlike the CU (and other schools) Rivals sites, that site is maintained inside the Texass AD.

Brown Chip has a few things wrong. Firstly that CU couldn't afford a $3 million buyout of Hawkins. They didn't want to deal with the political fallout, but by all (non-UT spun) accounts the money was there. Second, that CU has to make a payment of the buyout like they would have had to to Hawk. It would come out of the money the conference owes CU. And third, that CU is going to be in the same financial position in the Pac-12 as it was before. The Pac-12 figures to have payouts that will let CU absorb the buyout pretty easily. Oh, and fourth, the buyout most likely won't be $15 million anyway.... and that's assuming CU ends up owing it at all....

Put on your boots if you're eating this **** up.

All i've seen over the news in these media "winners/losers" categories is them faulting Colorado and hyping the return of the big 12. Did anything actually get fixed on their end? The discrepency between the have's and have not's is worse than ever before, even if a few are making a couple million more.

Honestly, i'm not worried about it because in a few years this crap is going to break down again and by that time, there will only be a few slots for schools that can be added in the Pac 10, unfortunately Texas' most likely final destination. All the other schools are truly going to get crapped on.

And Scott and Weiberg made one critical mistake in the courtship of the Big 12. Other than its somewhat foggy math that a 16-team Pac-10 could readily get to $20 million in TV revenue per school, they wanted to substitute Kansas for Oklahoma State late in the process, according to multiple sources in the Big 12.

Texas was really starting to feel queasy now, sources said. UT officials knew deep down Texas A&M wasn't coming to the Pac-10, despite Bill Byrne's assurances, according to sources. And now Scott and Weiberg were looking to dump Oklahoma State in favor of Kansas. If A&M was a no-show, the Pac-10 would add Utah. Scott was looking to add new TV markets, not stick to the deal that was agreed upon a few days earlier.

According to sources who talked to me Tuesday (two days after the fact), Dodds and Plonsky couldn't stop thinking about all the negatives. And now they were dealing with a wheeler-dealer Pac-10 commissioner who wanted to sub out Boone Pickens' Cowboys for the chance to grab the 8 million households in the state of Missouri.

Look, we all have our biases. Ours are mired in a pro-CU stance, but I'd still argue as a fan base we've managed a little more objectivity than this guy who is obviously closer to the source. As we've all noted, he's a mouthpiece of the UT AD. The Texas fanbase appear to be pissed at this deal, based on a sampling of fan chit sites, and the UT leadership are anxious to paint the Pac 10 negotiators as the bad guys, and themselves as the ones who saved the day.

What's the truth? Who knows, but this looks like an obvious attempt to counter earlier reports that the Pac 10 backed out because Texas made a power/money grab in the "11th hour".

He can say CU fans' efforts to spin our result are pointless, we're clearly losers. But if I'm not mistaken, we'll make more money than we would have had we stayed in the status quo. We're in a conference for which we're more culturally and academically suited.

Here's my big question for you guys who are smart on this. Chippy keeps referencing our 15 million dollar payout. Is that really a payout, or revenues lost by not being in the Big XII to collect TV revenue? If we give away our Big XII revenue, fine, we should be collecting in another conference (starting 2012, at least--perhaps sooner).

College football leadership should remember that all of this revenue is dependent on a good product. Folks won't pay for a bad one. So this notion that Chip can laugh at the desperate members of the conference for giving up their share of revenue to UT, aTm, and OU is great, except it widens the gap of capabilities within the conference. How can this not water down the product on the field? It's a money grab which deteriorates the game, which ultimately has to affect revenue, right?

To me this looks like Chip's attempt to stop the bleeding. The fans are angry and he's anxious to paint CU and nebraska as the bad guys, not Texas.

But really, CU and nebraska only wanted to escape to a conference where their teams shared an equal voice, and they had an opportunity to build a team and compete on equal footing. Furthermore-- depending on whom you believe--Texas had a chance to better the world of college football, but just wasn't willing to play fair (and what's fair, if they bring more fans to the tube, do they deserve more...I don't know) with its new conference mates.

So tell me how Colorado and nebraska are the villains again?

Shame on you Chip. The fans know the truth.

It is amazing to me to read about what all these people who didn't go to CU (and mostly have never even been to Boulder) think CU should do and what is best for CU. Anyone who has spent some time in Boulder knows that this was by far the best move and one that the people with ties to CU have been hoping for for at least the last 10 years or so.

This Buffalo Chips guy has his head too far up Bevo's ass to get any of his stories right through this whole thing. Most of his scoop never happened and some of it was way off the wall. In the end I got far more right than this UT puppet and when Utah gets the PAC invite tomorrow I will have it all right.

I am at the point where I don't care what the B12 or any of the Texas schools do anymore as long as they don't end up with the PAC 12. I also can care less what any of these reporters and media types think who didn't go to CU. All the CU folks know what is right for us and they made the decision without any Texas input and got exactly what they wanted and that was to get the hell away from the state of Texas.

**** YOU Texas, and no, not just UT, the whole damn state!

Cow Chip is the one spinning. CU didn't gamble. We were going to the Pac 10 whenever we got an invite--case closed. CU was working for that invitation long before Texas was even mentioned in the equation. Had the Pac 10 never even considered Texas and the Big 10 never even considered the corn or Mizzou, we were still gone as soon as we had the chance.

Poor Chip and his fellow Texans still can't get over that CU and the corn had options regardless of what Texas chose to do. They can't fathom that the sun doesn't rise and set in Austin. But can you expect anything but revisionist history from a state that decides that Thomas Jefferson isn't an important figure in American history because they dislike his views on the relationship of the state and religion?

Goodbye Texas, we are well rid of you.

I wonder how Chip reconciles his obvious spin with these fans' reactions.

BTW, the numerous links to Shaggybevo over the last couple of days have sold me on that site. The majority of posters are reasonable and a fair number of them are funny, though for the record none of the reasonable people are funny, so you need a little balance.

EDIT: I laughed so hard at this guy's lamentation, tears squirted out of my eyes. Good stuff on that Shaggy Bevo interwebz place.

CU does not owe the Big 12 anything...it's just that the Big 12 can withold CU's earnings that's all.

Regarding shaggybevo:

Hmm, they seem reasonable yet still arrogant, using words such as "BSD" and "clout".

If I were them, I'd be bored too. Ho hum, another 11-win season that feels lame if it doesn't end in a MNC.

I agree with your assessment. But winning tends to do that to a fan base. I miss my CU-success inspired arrogance...those were the days!

That ****-nugget Chip Brown is a real piece of work. Here are some very simple facts:

1) The VAST majority of Colorado fans are THRILLED to be in the PAC 10, with or with Texas;
2) The sentiment among Texas fans is that this was not a good move, despite more money for UT;
3) CU stands to lose somewhere around $8 at most for the 2010 season, then earn that back within 2 or 3 years with PAC 10 payout;
4) CU no longer has to deal with all those assholes in Texas.

And he puts CU in the "Loser" category? That dude is out of his funking mind. I wouldn't care so much, but for the fact that he has the entire US waiting on his every word, whether its true or not.

Douche Brown contradicts his own logic numerous times in his own article.

First, the blatant ripping of CU and NU, especially his constant "which CU can't afford" add nothing to the story and are clearly either personal jabs rooted in jealousy, or more likely, jabs intended to make CU and NU look like the bad guys and bumbling idiots while making UT look like a knight riding in on a white horse. Either way it's classless and not journalism.

The biggest indication he's just throwing **** against the wall though, are his thoughts on KU. UT pulled back because they saw Scott wanting to replace OSU with KU (in the UT spin world). So the Pac-10 had no problem waiting and saying, this is who we want, take it or leave it with KU. Yet, when it comes to CU, we "panicked" and moved early to stave off Baylor. First of all, CU was the only school to get an invite that WASN'T contigent on UT coming over. Secondly, if the Pac-10 decided to tell OSU to suck it and invite KU anyway, they would've done the same with CU and Baylor. The fact that the Pac-10 was supposeldy going to replace OSU with KU just adds more credibility to the FACT that CU was getting an invite either way.

I'm also sick of hearing the "can't afford it". To report that the CU admin didn't dot the i's and cross the t's and look at every scenario is just plain foolish. They went into this knowing full well it may just be them and Utah, and they have plans for the buyout, whatever it may be. They obviously had enough info to decide that paying the buyout was worth it and that it would just be a bonus if the league dissolved and the buyout went away.

I think most reasonable people know Colorado is a winner in the scheme of things. CU wanted to be in the Pac and they are in the Pac. How hard is that for Chip to understand? CU would have only been a loser going to the Pac 10 if Texas and the minions had come along. Even though it meant more money, you would have belonged to just another conference who sold its soul to the Devil (Texas)

Congrats Buffs like I said, most informed people know CU made a good move.

I like how Chip left Nebraska off the winners and losers list altogether. Methinks he views Nebraska as a winner in this but could not get himself to admit it. Typical Texas arrogance.

Brown dances to Dodds tune, he'd say anything he's told to say. There is a word for that kind of behavior, where one lies down and does what one is told, but I shall not say it. Why bother reading his crap anymore? His fifteen minutes ran out during the realignment. CU got away clean, UT is pissed they don't have a road destination worth a **** anymore. Eff 'em, CU is on to better things.

I'll say it. C. Brown is Dodds diseased infected whore.

WOW !!!!! That is an impressive piece of fiction. The CU "panicking" part is particularly ripe (or is that smelly?). Wonder who his "sources" in Boulder were - DeLoss Dodds? Daryl Royal? Earl Campbell? And when did our penalty - widely reported to be in the $9M range, suddenly jump up to $15M (which, of course, we can't afford)? And blast that scumbag Larry Scott for trying to ace out Okla State with Kansas (and KEEP Texas Tech?????). "Mr" Brown needs a vacation.

I Twittered to my now 12,000 followers

I have heard of people getting their "ego stroked" by somebody else, but this is ego masturbation! With all of the references to orangebloods in that story as well as his seemingly endless supply of "sources" (see graduate student in the UT AD who happlily obliges Chip's offers of a BJ and doesnt consider himself to be gay because Chip is such a pussy) and the constant "I broke the story and worked so tirelessly" BS...I have never seen a journalist waste so much time on informing everybody how popular he is.

So heres to you chip (you ****ing prostitute)..."Make sure to keep your hair spotless and clean
Wash it at least every two weeks
Once every two weeks
And if you see Johnny football hero in the hall
Tell him he played a great game
Tell him you like his article in the newspaper"

You are so popular...
