Kiszla on the warpath: Hawk is dead Buff walking

OK, let's get a show of hands: Anybody else believe the Buffaloes would be closer to football glory today if they had dumped coach Dan Hawkins and remained loyal to the places where Colorado won a national championship?

Kiszla what a genius.

At the recent westward-ho party where CU pledged allegiance to a new league, the university's power brokers were all smiles, belting out the school fight song and dreaming big, as when regent Michael Carrigan declared: "I look forward to the Buffs beating Nebraska in the Rose Bowl!"

At the same time, a stiff-lipped Hawkins stood like a wallflower at the back of the room and was ignored when CU big shots gathered for celebration photos. No one cares about his opinion regarding where the Buffs play in the future, Hawkins admitted.

Neither do I.

Kiszla floats the idea that GAry Patterson would have come here. Yeah sure Mark.

I really wish we could hire Steve Mariucci after Hawk is gone but I know we wouldn't be able to come up with the cash. CU really needs a big name guy with some juice to get this program turned around. I think we still will have a problem even with a new coach considering how far we have fallen. I love EB but I don't think he's the guy we need right now.

Mariucci had a good run at SF taking over a team that had to much talent to do anything other than win and an established quality staff of assistant coaches. Other than that he has been mediocre at best including his time as a college coach. His one year as a college HC he was 6-6 with a bowl loss to a Navy team that was less talented than his Cal team.

I recognize that he has name recognition but Hawk had name recognition after his record at Boise. The last thing we need is a guy who has a history of underachieving and outright losing and shows no signs of a driving hunger to win.

I agree with you that EB might not be the guy we need right now but as to Mariucci, no thanks. I would rather have a lower profile guy who has a hunger and drive to make this program a winner again.

So Dave Logan, right?

Kizla is turning into more and more of a hack every day. he is one of 4 people that doesn't like the move.

We really need to stop linking to Jizla stories. Why give the guy any attention ?

Mooch likes his TV gig and if he comes back to coaching it'll be the NFL. Never say never, but it's highly unlikely.

I think you underestimate Mooch. He caoached the 9ers through salary cap purgatory and took them to the playoffs. If memory serves he got fired after a 10-6 season and they haven't done jack since he left. Recruits would love this guy too.

You're right that I don't see him leaving his tv gig, but we could do a LOT worse IMO.

I can think of another players coach with a mediocre record in the NFL that was pretty successful Pac 10 head coach in Los Angeles.

I've never been impressed with Mariucci, other than that last second playoff win that they replay too much, he's not done anything.

Wasn't he at Cal before he got the San Francisco job?

One season, 6-6 including getting blown out by Navy in a bowl. I don't think he's a bad guy, I just don't think he is the motivated, willing to do what it takes to win guy that we need to turn this program around.

We cannot afford to look at the usual suspects, no mediocre retreats, no overrated HS coaches, no guys who just get the job because of their links to the past. It won't be sexy but I think the way to go is with a guy who knows winning at this level as a long time assistant with experience as a coordinator and recruter at a major successfull program. A guy like Mac, who was an assistant at Michigan, Sonny Lubbick who was an assistant at Miami, Kenny Hatfield who was an assistant at Arkansas and many others who came on to have success when given the opportunity to run their own shows.

I would not be looking for a guy who is the "young up and comer" looking to use us as a stepping stone, instead look for the guy who has been passed over and has a chip on his shoulder and is looking for a place to make his name. These guys know what it takes to win from all levels, they know the college assistants who they need to make their programs work and they know the HS coaches who have the players they need to make the program work.

As to Kizla, he is a lazy hack who has figured out that he can get attention by saying stupid things to try to piss people off. He would rather try to be cutesy or sarcastic than do the work to actually research a story and present a logical argument based on facts. I know that Woody gets some people pissed off and he understands that as a columnist his job is to provoke reaction but at least he tries to find a new or different way to look at situations and does some research before he makes his statements. Kisla is a second rate wanna-be and is not worthy of the attention people on this site have given him.

Brett Favre's QB coach for 4 years.

60-43 with the 49ers with playoff runs in 4 of 6 years.

Won 12+ games in 3 of 6 years with 49ers

15-28 as the Lion's HC with Matt Millen as GM and Joey Harrington at QB is figgin unbelievable.

He's better than you're giving him credit for.

i wouldn't have too much issue with Mariucci in principle though as MtnB says.....i'd be concerned about "motivation". be pretty easy to think i'll just coast on into Boulder and enjoy the good life cashing nice checks and waking up to the Flatirons everyday.

in our new west coast identity, the NFL "play" may be great for recruiting (esp at QB) than in the no NFL or under-emphasized NFL in places like Oklahoma and Texas. West Coast and Phoenix, like Denver, seems to have an NFL first mentality. and if we were recruiting those areas with a new purpose and market presence....Mooch or someone like Mooch might not be the worst thing with some solid coordinators, experienced recruiting coordinator on board who aren't convinced they are going to re-invent the wheel in this cute little minor league college game with their big, bad NFL experience (what's up Bill Callahan, Greg Robinson?).

not my first preference, i'd rather get an assistant from a top program ready for shot at the big chair...a guy who can bring some discipline into play and maybe over-achieve the first couple seasons through coaching and gameplan to get the "mo" back in the program.....but, hey.

and he's Tom Izzo's best friend :smile2:

I don't know, he just does not do it for me.

Kizla's article added nothing to the argument regarding Hawkins status. I would guess that over 70% of CU fans believe it is time for Hawkins to go - so did Mark just find this out. (by the way I did NOT click on the link- I grabbed the sports page before it went to line the litter box.)

I do kind of wonder if the AD knew this might be coming and that played into the decision to keep Hawkins. From a financial standpoint, maybe they felt they couldn't absorb buying out the coach and paying to get out of the BigXII in the same year.

Or felt (as someone else suggested) that they'd be in a better position to attract a new coach if they waited until we were members of the Pac.

Yeah, I was actually kind of surprised he didn't end up coaching at MSU. Taking the Lions job was a bad move in hindsight, although they had a 1st round QB and a new stadium and he got a 5 year deal.

Whether it was planned or not, our ability to attract a top of the line coach and staff greatly improved with the move to the Pac.

I agree... I just hope that when we actually start Pac 12 play, we will have a competent coach onboard!

We need someone who can recruit and bring some damn passion to the fanbase. Mooch is a failed NFL coach who loves to kiss up to Deion Sanders on the NFL network. Screw him.

I will have to take notice of some of these Pac 10 assistants now for other candidates.

I think our HC position is going to be a lot more attractive in the Pac. We need to do something about our 1 year assistant contracts though to make that more attractive.

Well said guys. I agree we need a guy who can recruit and sees this as a destination job an not just a temp landing spot until other opportunities present themselves which might be the case with Mooch. I don't really know of any big time assistants off the top of my head who have the drive, experience needed and the So-Cal recruiting connection so I guess I'll have to do a little more research. Maybe we could start a thread in the future. The people I can think of usually only have 1 or 2 of the three i.e. a big name who might see this gig as temp work or drive and recruiting but not the experience anyway I just hope we can get a guy who can turn it around fast as our rise back to the top gets harder with each ****ty season we have. I just hope we don't go the same route we took with Hawkins - no mid major HC's please

Not a big name but did anybody hear Embree on 104.3 last week ?
He bleeds black & gold and has the passion for the job. If he could be head coach and get a great defensive coordinator & EB for offensive coordinator I think CU would be on thier way back. Embree & EB were great recruiters and their So Cal connections would be VALUABLE.
Don't forget- Maurice Jones-Drew was a Buff before Embree & EB went to UCLA.

Is Embree even employed now? Anywhere?

Embree, EB, David Gibbs. Just get someone who has invested themselves in the program and is a Buff. Knowing football would be nice as well. Each of these guys knows the game as a player, a grad assistant, a position coach and, in Embree and Gibb's case, as a coordinator. EB would kill the Southern California recruiting grounds. 2 years and they would have this thing turned around with no excuses regarding the culture in Boulder, the lack of institutional support yada yada yada ad infinitum..... That BS. Anyone should be able to recruit to Boulder. I just spent a week in Norman. Great program. Great coaching staff. Great facilities. . . . . . . .I still would have gone to CU (but I am a bit biased).

my objection to EB as OC is i don't want another learn on the job OC. he needs a year or two under an experienced guy before he's calling plays IMO. not sure what coaching Adrian Peterson prepares you for, really. great gig, but?

and, i'm not a huge fan of the "back to the past" hires. GB was the one you get in my book. how did Mike Shula or John Blake do? i'm sure they bled crimson and whatever, respectively. i'd pull like heck for JE and EB but i think we need to move forward and get the best available guy. unpopular opinion, prolly, i know.
