Observations, theory and prediction

My observation #1: We actually have a pretty good football team. I've seen 2 practices, and I have to admit I'm surprised by how strong we look. Much better than I've seen in the past 4-5 years at comparable stages. Guys like Perichak (sp?), Bakhtarki (sp?), and Will Jefferson look like totally different (and legit, above-average) players.

My observation #2: Hawk coached at BSU with kids that were a little under the radar. Many of the players on the CU team are under the radar (in large part because Hawk hasn't been able to recruit particularly well -- according to the scouting gurus -- over the past couple of years). Those kids that we were able to land that were highly touted haven't, by and large, lived up to the hype (although there are several exceptions).

My theory: Hawk is either (i) a pretty good talent evaluator of "middle tier" players, and/or (ii) he prefers, and is better at, coaching kids that weren't highly touted and have a chip on their shoulder. This is a team of kids that maybe weren't 4 or 5 star kids, but they seem to know how to play football.

My prediction: I'm drinking the kool-aid. I think we could grab 8 wins.

I hope you are right.

If the upper classmen play with urgency and take responsibility for this team, the Buffs will improve. Team leadership took a dive after Jordan Dizon and Tarrence Wheatly left.

Having a bunch of players who will not accept defeat who play lights out for 60 minutes would go a long way towards an 8-win season.

The jury is still out as to whether CU has found a way to clean up the penalties, force turnovers, pressure the opposing QB, pick up blocks, make clutch FGs, and win on the road.

No matter what happens during training camp, we're not going to know any of those things have improved over 2009 until game day.

Really hope the leadership on the field we are hearing about spills over onto the field on game day. I would give anything to see a very spiritied, nasty team come out to play each week. I want to see quotes like we saw after the OU games where teams are saying we came out and smacked 'em in the mouth.

I'm not sure where I stand in terms of wins, but I sure like the reports coming out of Boulder. Can't wait to see the scrimmage on Thursday.

I think by and large Hawkin's and his staff have been good evaluators of talent. In fact, it has been their strong suit to date.

I think saying that they missed on their 4 and 5 star guys is not completely true. I saw a post on Rivals that compared it to USC and basically said when you go to USC highly touted, you get there and realize you are just another number and you better start working hard to get noticed. At CU, especially since Slick left, those 4-5 star guys were instant celebrities here. That is tough for a lot of 18 year olds to overcome. The 2 and 3 star guys come in with something to prove here. The highly rated Colorado kids have done best (Majors, Givens, Miller, and Kasa) - and yes some of these guys have yet to prove much, but they are/were competing for jobs by year 2 on campus.

How many 4-5 star guys don't pan out at places like Florida and Texas? I'd guess a lot since nearly all their guys were rated that high and not all of them become stars.

I think this has been true going back to Marcus Houston at CU.

Per Rivals:
'05 Maurice Greer 4*
'06 none
'07 PT Gates 4*
'07 Simas 4*
'07 Miller 5*
'08 Deehan, Givens, Katoa, Polk, MTM all 4*
'08 D. Scott 5*
'09 Kasa, Harris 4*

I do notice a huge error in general with RB's. Houston, Greer, Gates, Scott.... hmmm

We've lost some due to injury and legal/academic issues. But all in all, the guys we got in here seem to be competing pretty well.

This stars debate is stupid - sure there are misses (DScott, Houston, etc) and low star guys that outperform (Dizon, McKnight, Speedy), but no offense to our guys, but there's probably not a single person on this board that wouldn't trade our entire roster for Florida's.

Some guys might have an uncanny ability to hit half court shots, but I'd rather shoot layups even if I miss a few every once in a while.

hell no.

That's like switching lines at the grocery store; it always turns out badly. Sure, the checker looks intelligent and smarter than the one you picked first, but personnel can change in snap. The checker goes on break and you stand there helplessly while they count out the cash drawer twice. And the new one is a "trainee" who keeps asking everyone if they know the code for broccoflower instead of looking it up. Your bagger cuts a finger on a paperbag and some union guy investigates whether the bandaid was applied properly and there is a hearing about when he can return to work. There is an argument about the use of expired coupons and whether a certain person paid for the bottled water they consumed while shopping. The guy in front of you who had just one item? He needs a propane exchange. And the line you left behind starts zipping people through like they are on meth.

I say don't do it. You stick with your grocery line and you stick with your guys.

Yea, that's why the SEC has won 6 national titles since the BCS began in 1997 - they stay in the same line when recruiting - only the best.

This is ****ing laughable. Florida's talent level is waythe**** higher than ours.

I am starting to become extremely optimistic for the coming year. I am hoping that it doesn't come crashing down on Sept 4th because we will have to put allbuffs on suicide watch.
