McCartney's Recruits Dominate the Record Book (Warning Stats Overload)

Section106

Member
I channeled my inner Plati last night. These stats were pulled from cubuffs.com. Kudos to D Plati and the AD staff for maintaining these PDFs for Buff Nation. Obviously these guys care as much as I do about CU football but are not in a position to campaign for a new HC (the way I am)! This list was compiled in hopes of highlighting the level of talent Coach Mac brought to CU and is not intended to ignore or marginalize the accomplishments of other CU greats recruited by past coaches (many of which top other CU statistical categories but were not included because I obviously have an agenda). As you will see McCartney's recruits dominate the most important statistical categories at CU. The only way to win is to recruit the best players (Please feel free to correct anything you see here).

CU began playing football in 1890

Mind boggling! Just curious 106, how many times did Hawks name come up? I'm guess not too often.

Solid stats, love it. The only problem I'm having with McCartney is he hasn't recruited a single player in well over a decade, not sure the past can also be the future. Regardless, very impressive.

i don't remember Chris Brown being the runner-up for the Doak Walker award. but, impressed to know it. Mr. Brown, well done, sir.

is that going to be 2001 or 2002? whaddya think?

winners:

2001: Luke Staley (ByU)
2002: Larry Johnson (Penn St)

Pretty sure that was 02, I remember he was even getting some heisman consideration that year.

Not only that, but people need to remember that quite a bit has changed since then. Mac basically built CU into a power by pilfering talent from places like Cali, Texas, and Louisiana. That was possible back then because programs like USC, Texas and LSU were down. Texas was relegated to borderline irrelevance in the old SWC, the formation of the Big 12 changed that.

Another part of Mac's strategy, which was brilliant at the time, was to make sure to play a tough schedule so that CU would be on TV a lot. Today, the proliferation of cable and satellite TV, where now most games are televised anyway, pretty much negates that strategy. The bottom line is kids want to be on TV.

I'm not saying don't bring him back, but those who think it will be just like flipping a switch may end up disappointed....

'02. He got injured near the end of the season and had 1,700+ yards and I think was on pace for over 2,000. At least could have had a chance at it.

As some one who was born in 89' i can not remember the McCartney years however can some one tell me how his record is 95-55-5 (155 games coached for you math wizzes) yet holds the record for games coached at 153 and wins at 93.

Drop it, bro. Just drop it.

No, I'm ****ing with you. It's probably a typo.

This wouldn't be a not-so-subtle jab at our current (soon to be former) Head Coach from our new statistician? Good work - rep delivered.

Correct. I still vividly remember the Mizzou game that year. It went to OT and everyone in the stadium knew Brown was getting the rock but it didn't matter. He is one of my all time favorite Buffs.

NADA - In 5 years he might get one first team AA in Solder and hopefully at least a second or third team AA in Miller or Smith... We'll see.

I love that CU was better when there was no head coach than they are under Hawkins. :rofl2:

100% accurate. A lot with CU being good had to do with SC, UT and LSU being bad. Maybe it's the chicken and egg; did CU's pilfering in those states cause the other schools to underperform or vice versa.
