****ing hire Gus Malzahn!

I suggested we should hire him a few weeks ago, but I am just becoming more and more impressed with him over time. he is an offensive genius! snatch him up before someone else does! and his hurry up offense would work great at colorado. opponents would be dying in the altitude

I just don't see any way he comes to Boulder. He'd be passing up a lot of money to come here. I bet he stays in SEC country.

He also has almost zero connections west of Tulsa, he will be a good coach, but he isn't going to be a coach out West.

Interesting....

Of the the four choices, Gus Malzahn stands out the most. Have you guys seen Oregon's offense this year and the numbers they're putting up in our future conference? That's a good resemblance as to what Gus Malzahn's offenses do. I know he has no head coaching experience at the collegiate level, but the guy has worked at 3 different high-profile programs like Arkansas, Tulsa, and Auburn and has coached alongside some of the great. And recruiting? The guy helped reel in one of Auburn's greatest recruiting classes in their long and storied program -- and they're on track to have yet another great class again this year! So obviously he knows how to recruit! In addition, he was one of the best high school coaches in the state of Arkansas, which is what got him noticed, and how he managed to upgrade to the collegiate level. The guy is a GENIUS!

We all know he runs one of the most complex offensive schemes in the country, and it's his own brand. No other teams run his exact offensive scheme. It's phenomenal to watch, and if you haven't seen it yet, you can catch a sneak peek during Auburn's game tomorrow evening, prior to our game coming on 2 hours later.

Now onto the results... in his very first season at Arkansas (which also happened to be his very first season coaching at the collegiate level), his offense led Arkansas to their first conference championship game in years, and they kept it close with the Florida Gators (who would go on to win the NC that year) for most of the game, only losing by 10 points. You might say it was due to the 2 NFL caliber running backs they had. But just keep in mind, they played in 2005 and 2007 as well, yet didn't lead their team to anything significant in those other two seasons without Malzahn.

In 2007, he took over at Tulsa as their offensive coordinator, and the year prior to that, their offense finished the season ranked 24th, overall. In his very first year, he propelled them to the number 1 overall offensive ranking. And in year 2, there was no drop off either as they finished number 1 yet again!

In 2009, he took over as Auburn's offensive coordinator. Prior to his arrival, Auburn's offense was simply put: abysmal. They finished 97th, overall, in 2007, and 104th, overall, in 2008. In his very first year at Auburn, he propelled their offense to 16th OVERALL, in a defensive-heavy conference. I should also note his offense scored more points (21) against the national champions that year, Alabama, than any other SEC team did that year. And remember Alabama had one of the best defenses last year. Not to mention he turned one of the worst QBs in the SEC in 2008 (Chris Todd) into a machine in 2009. This year, his offense is currently ranked 10th, but should be top 5 (my guess would be 2) by the season's end. And also, Auburn is ranked FIRST this year and on track to win a national championship...

If he can put up those kind of numbers in a self-proclaimed defensive conference, imagine what he could do for us in the Pac-10/12! The guy has had enough experience to be a head coach, and if he could find a Will Muschamp type defensive coordinator, we'd be unstoppable.... JUST LIKE OREGON! Plus, he's a midwest guy and there's no doubt he's quite possibly the hottest assistant coach in the country right now! I'd much rather us try out luck with him, before someone else snatches him up, because I'm willing to bet he'll be a successful head coach here soon.

I say HIRE HIS @$$ NOW!!!!

I like Malzahn, a lot. I'd say he doesn't have much big time experience, but how much does Chip Kelly have? He has more than that guy and he's currently leading Oregon to a national title game. My worries would be things such as does he have the contacts to hire a solid staff? Can he recruit the west coast? Does he have any high school aged boys that play QB?

Now we had heard that Bohn had high interest in a SEC coordinator, but not Jim McElwain. Might this be the guy?

when did we hear this about bohn? either way, i doubt bohn had interest in malzahn. that would be giving bohn too much credit to think he could lead an effective coaching search

Now we had heard that Bohn had high interest in a SEC coordinator, but not Jim McElwain. Might this be the guy?

This got me curious. Here's a list of SEC coordinators...

Bama: OC Jim McElwain DC: Kirby Smart
Arky: OC Garrick McGee DC Willy Robinson
Auburn OC Gus Malzahn DC Ted Roof
Florida OC Steve Addazio DC Teryl Austin
Georgia OC Mike Bobo DC Todd Grantham
KentuckyOC Randy Sanders DC Steve Brown
LSU OC Gary Crowton DC John Chavis
Ole Miss OC Dave Rader/Mike Markuson DC Tyrone Nix
MSU OC Les Koenning DC Manny Diaz
Tennessee OC Jim Chaney DC Justin Wilcox
Cocks OC Steve Spurrier DC Ellis Johnson
Vandy OC Jimmy Kiser DC Bruce Fowler

If we're really looking at somebody on that list that isn't McElwaine, I pray to God it's either Smart or Malzahn. Nobody else there excites me at all. And if it's Gary Crowton I will come to Boulder and firebomb Dal Ward....

I'm not sold on any of those candidates except for Malzahn. I think he would be the best fit here. McElwaine isn't 1/4 of what Malzahn is, and Hawk owned him while he was an OC at Fresno State.

And I don't know about Smart, because he was recently promoted to DC at Alabama and everyone knows from Saban's other stops that he runs the defense.

Why in the hell is Gary Crowton even on this list? The numbers show, since taking over the OC position at LSU, LSU's offenses are progressively worsening. If can't be a successful OC, then what the hell would make Bohn think he'd make a good head coach?

If we're going to hire a coordinator, Malzahn is the best choice of them all. It's either him, or a successful head coach at an FCS school

but how much does Chip Kelly have? He has more than that guy and he's currently leading Oregon to a national title game.

He doesn't have the college coaching years behind his belt like Kelly does, but Malzahn's numbers speaks for itself. There was absolutely no talent at Tulsa, Arkansas, and Auburn when he took over, and look what he managed to do with all three of those programs. Keep in mind Tulsa was coming off a mediocre season when he took over, and Arkansas and Auburn were both coming off of losing seasons when he took over.

Can he recruit the west coast?

Look at the talent he recruited at a second rate program in the SEC (namely Cam Newton). Auburn has to play second fiddle to Alabama, Georgia, and LSU, yet Malzahn was a big reason why they finished ahead of all three of those programs in the recruiting rankings last year. And look at what he managed to do with talentless offenses... I'm pretty sure the guy would have no problem recruiting the midwest and west coast.

My worries would be things such as does he have the contacts to hire a solid staff?

The guy is a genius and the wildcat/spread that he runs, he originated at the high school rankings and brought it to college with him. He knows who to hire in order to for his offense to fire on all cylinders, and he takes pride in the offenses that he runs. He will hire to the best of his budget. And the old saying goes, 'to be a good defensive coordinator, you have to be a good offensive coordinator'. The guy obviously is the best OC in the nation and I have no doubts that he'll hire the right DC who'll work endlessly with him on how to stop and defend all offenses.

Does he have any high school aged boys that play QB?

If he does, I'm sure if he has his daddy's genes, he'll be a better fit for our program than other father/son coaching/playing duos in our beloved program today. :smile2:

That was just a list of all coordinators in the SEC. Not intended to imply that Bohn is actually looking at all of them. I did want to throw in the Crowton comment just on the off chance we were looking at him, though. LSU's offense has completely imploded under his supervision. That offense makes me nervous about Miles, even though he's probably got the best resume' of any of the coaches we've talked about aside from Mac. If he can't get rid of Crowton, that's a problem for me. Crowton sucks, big time.

He wouldn't take the job.

He makes $500k. If we upped his salary a bit I bet he'd bite.

Offensive philosophy

Malzahn is known for his no-huddle offensive philosophy. In January 2003, he published a book and instructional video titled Hurry Up No Huddle — An Offensive Philosophy (ISBN 9781585186549), that became the blueprint for the offensive wave engulfing the state.[24] Several NFL teams adopted some of Malzahn's offensive strategies.[25] Malzahn is perhaps best known for his formation, the "Wildcat", which became famous during his year at the Razorbacks, but is actually a variation on the single wing, a play that dates to Pop Warner.

Malzahn has been involved as a guest speaker and instructor at numerous coaching clinics around the nation.

Right now the most dominant football being played across an entire conference is in the SEC. It makes a lot of sense to go to a winner to find your next coach. This worked out pretty well when we hired Mac.

sounds like this guy knows coaching, but I get weary when the term "offensive guru" gets thrown around. Wasn't Hawk supposedly one?

Well, if he "clinics" then I'm definitely on board.

This guy does his offensive guru coaching in the SEC and is overly successful, though. I wonder what percentage of the country he could clinic in an offensive meeting?

Yeah, but the difference between Hawk and Malzahn is, Malzahn has dominated some of the toughest defenses and teams in the country, WITHOUT the luxury of having A+ talent. In addition, at every coaching stop he's made, the abysmal offenses, skyrocketed to the top of the rankings - and maintained the top spots every year that followed.

When Hawk was at Boise State, he was dominated by the same teams that Malzahn has dominated in the past (Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, Louisville, etc.), and he had FAR weaker schedules than what Malzahn has had.

Understood. It was a misunderstanding on my part. But now I can breathe a sigh of relief. :-D

He's dominated at every stop he's made, and he's currently OWNING one of the toughest conferences in the nation, who prides itself on "defense".

What's sad is every offense he's taken over, had no talent and was embarrassing in the previous year. Yet you'd never think that with him at the helm.

ya, great, hiring an ex-high school coach who fought so much with his ex boss at Arkansas and was banished to Tulsa as a result is EXACTLY what we need.

Malzahn deserves some credit as he's put up very impressive numbers wherever he's been. Wooo Pig Soooie was putting up solid numbers, Tulsa was off the charts (I agree with you that this doesn't necessarily mean much). However, Auburn's production on offense last year really showed Malzahn's ability. Auburn didn't have the pieces in place and was among the worst in D1 on offense in '08, yet Malzahn still had War Eagle putting up very solid numbers in '09. And we all know about this year with Cam Newton. I doubt Malzahn is a legitimate candidate given that he's a southeast guy, but if you were going to go after a coordinator, this should be the one. Malzahn would be a much better choice than McElwain, but I realize there's a much more realistic chance of getting McElwain since he's a westerner

As an Arkansas fan I must say you are an idiot. If you actually knew anything about the situation then it is very clear why Malzahn left, and he actually took the high road as opposed to Nutt and the rest of his staff. Back to the point of the thread, Malzahn will make a good coach, but honestly CU would not be the right job for him. He has ZERO contacts west of Tulsa. His best bet is staying in the Southeast. Sure he runs a very good scheme on offense, but he would not be a good pickup for CU. I like Malzahn but CU isn't the job for him.

I dont understand the no contacts west of Tulsa thing. I saw someone else say the same thing. Are there different rules for football in the East? How does everybody know who all of Malzahn's friends are?

He's my #1. I'd take him in a heartbeat.

I don't know how things work really, but I'm not so sure how big of a deal this "contacts" thing is. Mack Brown didn't have any Texas contacts and he's locked down the state. Urban at Florida? Not sure of his connections in FL before FL. Say what you want abotu Kiffin, but he hauled in quite a class at UT and he is most definately not an SEC guy. A good recruiter can recruit.

exactly what i was thinking. and the greatest recruiting tool is winning. and gus malzahn would win.

I'm not going to dismiss Malzahn right away, but I think a lot would depend on the staff he could assemble around him, particularly at DC. I hope Bohn grills candidates this time around on their potential staffs. Inexperienced coordinators under Hawkins have been a disaster.

This. He is a great coach and in time will get a shot. People ignore that he never had been outside the state of Arkansas until 2006, and even then, he was at Tulsa, a mere hour West of the border of Arkansas, before moving onto Auburn. I don't think he has the connections or the coaching clout to assemble a full staff, especially one that could recruit the West Coast. Somebody named Mack Brown and Urban Meyer, but those guys had coached all over and had significant HC experience before moving onto their current jobs. Malzahn is a different situation.
