Embree what happened?

This used to be a name we talked abotu as a possible CU head coach. Recently though we've re-hashed EB and especially Mike Leach to death, there's been some scuttlebutt about Les miles quitting a 7-1 SEC team and taking a pay cut to come here. We've talked about Malzah and McElwain as well but Jon Embree really seems to have dropped off the radar. Is he no longer considered even viable? or just falling victim to flavor of the month rumors?

I believe his backers have accepted the fact that it's not going to happen unless he's brought in as the right hand man to a guy like Mac or Miles, put in a high profile staff position, and then looked at for the top spot in 5 years or so.

Buff nation should have a lot of love for Jon Embree. His resume is simply too light to warrant serious consideration for the top spot at a program of CU's caliber. He needs coordinator or head coaching experience before we turn over the keys, imo.

It is interesting that the Embree talk has cooled while the Bienemy talk has intensified.

Embree has a good deal more experience than Bienemy. He has coached multiple positions, both on offense and defense, and has been a co-coordinator on offense at UCLA.

One thing Embree lacks is Bienemy's fiery passion and attitude. That is perhaps his undoing.

I would like Embree over Bienemy for HC.

Embree could come in tomorrow and have a long list of recruits to go talk with. I'm still mad that Bohn met Embree at DIA for the interview while giving D2D the keys to the city.

I am tryign to find a good resume for Embree online but it doesn't look like there is a good one, or a wiki either, any chance we could compile/post one?

I don't know the specific years, but he was a tight ends coach for Mac, then switched over and coached defensive ends for Neuheisel, then back to tight ends for Barnett (I think he coached wide receivers for Barnett too). Then he left CU and went to UCLA where he was the co-offensive coordinator for the passing game under Dorrell.

After UCLA I think he went to the Kansas City chiefs, and now he is working for Mike Shanahan at Washington.

I'm not fond of either EB or Embree as head coach at this time because neither one of them even has coordinator experience. If we're going to hire someone that hasn't been a head coach before, then they need to have at least a 2-3 years of experience as a coordinator at a major program or in the NFL.

Here is a complete bio for you guys. Honestly, he's my top choice as an unofficial "Head Coach in Waiting" if we hire Mac or Miles. I prefer him over guys like Gibbs, Bieniemy and Logan if we're keeping things in the family this time around. And if we were to take a risk on someone who doesn't have head coaching experience, I like Embree as much as anyone.

I also like Embree over EB as head coach in waiting.

That said, I don't like the head coach in waiting thing. I'd rather get a permanent head coach, not a Snyder situation.

Assistant Head Coach titles really don't mean much. Especially for a bad UCLA team that went nowhere.

Remember, Helfrich was the "passing game" coordinator at ASU before he came here. How'd that work out for us?

EB and Embree have been Life-long position coaches. I would be VERY careful that EB's new title this year has any real substance. Is he really involved with their offensive planning and strategies? Is he that type of coach even? His time at CU showed passion, but fell far short of CEO-like behavior nor did it show me that Barnett was relying on EB for much more than firing up the guys. That's great, but not a HC resume by a longshot.

:rofl2: Really? What caliber is that? From my view were down to a .22 or a bebe gun.

Perhaps you meant this hire is too damn important to be trusted to someone with such a light resume.

Not sure with how Oregon seems to score at will you want to bash Helfrich too much. Maybe it is the head man who is the problem because Helfrich seems to be able to move the number 1 team in the country. Granted, he has more talent at UofO but it seems he has worked ok for them.

Or maybe Chip Kelly is the one calling the plays / running the offense?

Top 20 all-time football program entering the best sports conference in the nation next year with the current #1 team in football?

Hawkins sucks, but CU doesn't. You need to get you program swagger back. A lot of people do.

embree reminds me a lot of karl dorrell at ucla. dorrell was very well-liked by some key boosters and by tons and tons of former players and such. so, he was given the hc job, despite a relatively light resume. he also was considered to be a "cerebral" type of a coach--- all about the xs and os and not about the fiery stuff.

obviously, it didn't work out for dorrell at ucla, and the fans and boosters really, really hated his "lack of passion" on the sidelines.

now, that doesn't mean it for sure wouldn't work out for embree. if he is selected, i will be very excited for him and hope for the very best. i think he seems like a really good guy and, with the right staff, he might do well.

but, if we can get more of a proven commodity at this time, shouldn't we do so? eb's coaching career has really ignited. meanwhile, embree, i believe, is taking the year off. even eb's resume at this point, IMHO, looks better than embree's. otherwise, i'd prefer Mac or the bama guy or les miles, etc.

Embree and Bienemy basically have the exact same job right now.

Both are position coaches for NFL teams. Embree coaches tight ends. Bienemy coaches running backs.

Eb is assistant head coach. He also has some coordinator duties. He also turned down being USC off coordinator. I'd say his star is currently burning a bit brighter than embree

If you believe the rumor mill, yes. Personally, I have a hard time believing Bienemy turned down USC's offensive coordinator position, and the "assistant head coach" title is meaningless. Brian Cabral is Colorado's "assistant head coach." That doesn't mean he's any more prepared to be CU's next head coach than anybody else is.

Maybe. Helfrich was not the root of the ills at CU. More likely was he was fed up and wanted out. Sounds a little more plausible than a plain it is just Chip Kelly calling the UofO plays. Helfrich was much better than given credit for while at CU.

uh, it is more than a rumor. the vikings upped his salary by a ton and gave him a bigger title and more responsibilities to stay and not to go to usc. so, yeah, he did, in fact, turn down the usc job.

When did we join the SEC?

Funny how that works when you realize you have a diamond in the rough on your hands. I'd take EB over JE but its not my call. Both men need coordinator experience.

Neither is the Pac 10. Or the Big 12 for that matter. I suppose there is a semantic angle here you have yet to reveal.

Pac-10 is by far the best sports conference. Look at championships and AD cup standings. It's not even close.

SEC's the best at football. Of course, that could very well get challenged by the Pac-12 with an increase in resources from a new tv deal.

And when ut ou osu and atm join and make it the p16 then there will be no debate about the toughest conf.
